In this episode we speak with Lisa Conte, head conservator at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and Alexandra Drakakis, a former curator who worked there for 13 years, to discuss the impact of the memorial and museum on the survivor community and on their own lives.

While originally planning on focusing exclusively on remembering and memorializing 9/11, Andrew and Jerry couldn't let the passing of Britain's Queen Elizabeth go by without some extensive discussion.  How do you square the deaths of figures who have complicated histories--what's an appropriate reaction. Elizabeth reigned for seven decades, and Britain was transformed during that time (as was the rest of the world).  The conversation ranges widely over sociological and anthropological changes, in which Andrew and Jerry touch on the transition from a needs-based society to a wants/demands-based one, how people have become more self-centered, and how the skewing of adoloesence upwards figures into all of this.

Then they talk about September 11th.  Jerry was on his way to New York as the attacks happened and Andrew was in DC, 2 blocks from the White House.  What does the date mean to them, and what did America's immediate coming together (only to fracture weeks later) auger for what's happening in America today.

Andrea Carter Brown fell in love with reading poetry as an angsty teenager, but couldn’t bring herself to try writing it because she was put off by the high standard of the works she read.
‘If I couldn’t write like the greats, I wasn’t going to try.’
Many years later Andrea’s friend took her to a New York poetry reading and, in that darkened room, Andrea began writing her own poetry on the only paper she could quickly find, and for weeks afterward she did nothing but write, letting years of pent-up poetry spill out of her.
Fast forward and Andrea has published a number of poetry collections, including one about her experiences of escaping on foot from her apartment close to the World Trade Center on 9/11, and the effects of that experience on her and her community in the 20 years in between the event and her publishing the collection, entitled September 12.
In this episode Andrea also reads one of the poems from September 12, that she chose specially for us at Creativity Found.

Whether the Sicarii of ancient Judea or Al-Qaeda of modern times, terrorist groups and their accompanying violence have scarred human existence for millennia.  Technology and human interdependence – along with the rise of air travel, computing and the advent of high explosives – have ensured that anyone with a grudge or malign political motive, can resort to violence in order to achieve their aims.  Sometimes that very violence is an end in itself and the late twentieth century saw the rise of terrorist organisations whose aim was to create as much destruction and bloodshed as possible.  The late 1960s saw Palestinian terrorism on the rise, closely followed by the radical left wing European groups such as the Red Army faction.  Later, there came the mercenary types such as Abu Nidal and Carlos the Jackal.  Finally there came the extremist Islamic groups:  Al Qaeda and Isis.

But the tactics of all these groups flowed from the post-Colonial era, when kidnapping, hostage-taking and car bombings were the norm, and often achieved results.  This then is the blood-soaked trail, and the placing of terrorist incidents in the context of wider asymmetric threats.  Terrorism can be a tool of both the deranged individual and the oppressive state.  We ignore such threats at our peril.

Inez Ribustello got her start in the world of food and wine after moving to New York City from her home state of North Carolina. Her wine career took a huge leap forward when she became an Assistant Cellar Master at Windows on the World in One World Trade Center. In a very short time, she was promoted to Beverage Director.

After losing her job and her work family on 9/11, Inez chose to eventually move back to her hometown with her fiancé Stephen. Together they opened their own restaurant, wine bar and retail store called On the Square.

Inez' next big venture was Tarboro Brewing Company, a microbrewery that began operating in 2016. Almost a year later, she and her husband opened a satellite taproom in a neighboring town. Stephen and Inez have two children that they absolutely adore.

In September of 2021, Inez self-published her memoir Life After Windows, a book she wrote chronicling her journey from North Carolina to Manhattan.

It is a story of resilience and hope in life after tragedy.

Dr. Hulsey focuses on working with students to achieve a high quality education. His research is in the fields of bridge engineering and effects of temperature extremes on structural systems like composite wall panels for buildings. His work blends a strong experimental component with the fundamentals of theory. 

Dr. Hulsey and his colleagues have been investigating the failure of the WTC7 building which was the third building to have collapsed on September 11, 2001.  A recent study from Dr. Hulsey challenges the official explanation from NIST.  Dr. Hulsey explained to us his findings from his 3 year study of the collapse of WTC7.

#026 This week is the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks against the United States on 9/11/2001. I thought it would be fitting to talk about my recollections of that terrible day. Feel free to leave comments and share yours as well.

A surprise episode! It was unplanned. The show remains on hiatus.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. It weighs on my mind. I have my own related trauma from that day and the days that followed as a young Boston radio DJ trying to navigate this horror where listeners called begging me for answers and to say things over the air. I was not prepared.

The two planes that hit the Twin Towers came from Boston full of local people who wouldn't make it back home. It affected so many families here. We are very sensitive to this. I know I am. 

Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles was full of people from Massachusetts. Of the 92 people total on board, 8 of the 11 member crew and 47 of the passengers on board were from Massachusetts.

Flight 175 Boston to Los Angeles with 26 passengers were from Massachusetts

I have been thinking a lot about that day and wanted to talk about it. Thanks for listening.

A top the North Tower of the World Trade Center was Windows on The World, a New York City landmark restaurant with a beautiful and diverse staff. We wanted to pay homage to the employees who lost their lives there on 9/11, and also talk about some of the incredible things that surviving employees created after losing their coworkers and friends.
