    How One Former Regulator Views Cannabis Programs with Erik Gundersen

    With new states passing cannabis laws, regulations become more important and new cannabis programs must be considered. To help us understand all the nuances related to this issue, Alex Valvasorri, Tyler Technologies General Manager for Licensing is joined by Erik Gundersen.  

    Erik Gundersen is the Founder and Principal of ERG Strategies, LLC. ERG Strategies is a consulting firm, driven by the experience of a former top cannabis regulator, that provides unique insights and perspective to cannabis regulators and businesses to help them achieve their goals.

    Prior to launching ERG Strategies, Erik served as Executive Director of Maine’s Office of Cannabis Policy (OCP). In February 2019, Maine Governor Janet Mills tapped Gundersen to establish the OCP and launch the state’s adult use cannabis program. Under Gundersen’s leadership, the OCP successfully ushered in the first set of program rules, scaled the Office, and began accepting license applications at the end of 2019. Maine’s adult use cannabis program launched in 2020 amid the COVID pandemic.

    Additionally, Erik was a founding member of CANNRA, the national association of cannabis regulators.

    Are virtual courts here to stay? 

    On January 1, 2020, the idea of a virtual court was almost science fiction for most municipal court administrators, but by April nearly every court in the country had set up some sort of remote hearing option in response to the pandemic. As social distancing requirements ease, is there still a need for this type of technology? According to subject matter experts Jonathan Lang and Marlin Jones, the answer is yes. Besides the challenges the pandemic created, finding childcare, reliable transportation, or even taking time off of work are some of the many challenges people face when seeking justice. Episode 43 looks at how virtual court platforms that offer more than just video conferencing are being used to solve this problem and creating a better solution for communities, constituents, and courts.  

    Jonathan Lang serves as the Product Manager for the Incode court suite. He is responsible for the overall direction and development of the products and services that Tyler provides to municipal courts across the country. Jonathan has been with Tyler since 2006. For his first nine years at Tyler, he worked as a project manager, specializing in implementation of the Incode court product for municipal courts of significant size. Before Tyler, Jonathan was in charge of technology for a health claims administrator and then worked as a production manager for a custom web development firm.

    Marlin Jones is the product owner for the Incode court product. In this role, she works with our clients to identify and address business problems through the development of new software solutions, as well as, responsible for providing support with the direction of assigned products. Marlin relocated back to Texas after living in Atlanta, GA for 20+ years and she started with Tyler in February 2018. Marlin enjoys working closely with our court customers.
