    Byron Bracey, Longwood Basketball ’81, Makes Biggest Contribution off Court

    Byron Bracey was a citizen leader long before it became part of Longwood's admissions literature.  Raised in a family of educators, Byron made Longwood history.  He enrolled in the second year of co-education in the fall of 1977.  Lettering three years on the men’s basketball team, he played his part as the Lancers shocked the nation with an appearance in the NCAA Division III Final Four.   The 1981 graduate left Longwood as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and retired 20 years later as Major Byron Bracey.

    Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced a new medal on Feb. 13, the Distinguished Warfare Medal. The new medal will be awarded to service members directly affecting combat operations who may not be who may not be geographically collocated. Clint Romesha was presented the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama for his actions during a battle in Afghanistan in October of 2009. He spoke at the Pentagon and had this to say: "Four hundred Taliban versus 53 American soldiers: it just doesn't seem fair ... for the Taliban."     Joel Mize: World War II Military Family

    Joel Mize is the son and nephew of five World War II veterans representing the U.S. Army, Army Air Corps, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marines Corps. Growing up they were his personal heroes, along with his grandmother, the matriarch of the Putnam family. Deeply patriotic, she worked in the support staff of the Muscle Shoals nitrate plant in World War I and in Mobile's Brookley Air Base during World War II. She set the tone for her sons to follow, and they served both in the European and Pacific fronts as well as in Occupied Japan. In this podcast Joel Mize talks about their war stories and the legacies they left to a young boy coming of age in the postwar era.

He is also a personal venture investor, engaged in various academic endeavors, and co-author with Andrew Roberts of the forthcoming book titled Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine. Prior to joining KKR, General Petraeus served over 37 years in the U.S. military, with six consecutive commands as a general officer.

    U.S. Army Europe and 13 other nations competed in the European best sniper squad competition 2017 at the 7th army training command in grafenwoehr training area, germany. The European best sniper squad competition is the second U.S. Army Europe competition challenging militaries from across Europe to compete and enhance teamwork with allies and partner nations. Some of the 30 events during the competition include shooting from a boat, shooting from a helicopter, long range target shooting, ghillie suit construction and a ruck march. The five day competition is designed to project a dynamic presence, foster military partnership and promote NATO interoperability.

    John McDonagh is currently producer and host of Radio Free Eireann and Talk Mac, We and Thee with Malachy McCourt and Corey Kilgannon, a weekly radio shows heard on Pacifica station WBAI, New York. 

    John began his career as a NYC Yellow cab driver after serving in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Vietnam War.  He has been writing and performing at Caroline’s, the Comic Strip, the Huntington Cinema Arts Center, NY Society for Ethical Culture, the Puffin Room SOHO, and Rocky Sullivan’s pub among others.  He is an active member of Irish American Writers and Artists.

    Ryan Hendrickson is our guest, a retired U.S. Army Green Beret. Prior to enlisting in the Army, he served in the U.S. Navy and then the U.S. Air Force. While in the Army he became a member of the Elite Green Beret Special Forces and focused on Explosives Detection and Disposal. While deployed in Afghanistan in a combat zone he stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device and received devastating injuries. Ryan was set to have his leg amputated when he was approached with a new experimental limb-saving medical procedure, which he volunteered for.

    After a long rehabilitation process, he convinced the Army to allow him to stay in a light-duty role. He was able to find a way to return to a combat role and returned to complete several deployments to war zones. He started journaling his recovery and eventually used that as the outline for his book "Tip of the Spear: The Incredible Story of an Injured Green Beret's Return to Battle".
