Die Katastrophe von Überlingen: Das grösste Flugunglück in der europäischen Geschichte

Es sollte eine Belohnung für gute schulische Leistungen sein und endete in einer Katastrophe: 2002 brachen 49 Kinder aus der russischen Ortschaft Ufa nach Barcelona auf. Am 1. Juli, kurz vor Mitternacht, kollidierte ihr Flugzeug über Überlingen am Bodensee mit einer Frachtmaschine. Dieser Absturz war auch eine Katastrophe für die Schweiz. Denn verantwortlich war auch die Schweizer Flugsicherung Skyguide. Eine Verkettung von Fehlern und Defekten führte zum Zusammenprall der Maschinen – 71 Menschen kamen ums Leben.

Die gebürtige Russin Nadja Wintermeyer wurde damals in Überlingen von einem lauten Donnern aus dem Schlaf gerissen: «Ich dachte erst, es kommt ein Gewitter. Dann gingen die Sirenen los. Und dann hiess es im Fernsehen, zwei Flugzeuge seinen zusammengestossen.»

Wie viele Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner Überlingens bot sie ihre Hilfe an – dank ihren Russischkenntnissen übersetze sie für die Angehörigen der verstorbenen Kinder. Bis heute pflegt sie den Kontakt zu den Hinterbliebenen.

Im Podcast «Apropos» rekonstruiert Tamedia-Redaktorin und Aviatikexpertin Pia Wertheimer die Ereignisse des 1. Juli 2002 – und erklärt, welche Folgen das Unglück für Überlingen, für den verantwortlichen Fluglotsen und für die Sicherheit am Himmel hatte. Gastgeberin ist Mirja Gabathuler.
