RERUN | Paul Adelstein: Bloom Where You're Planted, Keep Moving Forward

Today we chat with Paul Adelstein, from Private Practice, Prison Break, Scandal, and Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, as he lays out his 30 year career for us, sharing some of the most inspirational, motivational, and insightful stories, and how he’s managed to turn countless challenges into opportunities to win.

Beginning in Chicago, he began his career as a member of John Cusack’s commedia-style theatre company. We talk about how the rigor of this group prepared him for anything, and as he shares with us here, there was a lot to be prepared for. From the jobs he’s lost, to the ones that have come to define his career, he’s unapologetically honest about what it takes to persevere and stay focused, even when everything seems to be falling apart. From a pre-audition pep-talk from John Travolta, to a meeting with Shonda Rhimes that lead to a direct offer, his journey proves that things always work themselves out, and often lead to beautiful, seemingly fortuitous, full-circle moments that make an artistic life worth the uncertainty and risk.

Regardless of where you are on your journey, whether you’re at a peak, or feel stuck in a valley, today’s conversation is for you. Full of encouragement and optimism, this bird’s-eye-view of a career is a reminder that things are always working out for good. Your good and for the good of great storytelling.

KIMBERLY SHANNON MURPHY: Adrenaline Over Fear

KIMBERLY SHANNON MURPHY: Adrenaline Over Fear

Before she became known as Hollywood’s go-to stunt woman for top box office films and television, Kimberly Shannon Murphy had a love of dance and gymnastics as a child. Her interests expanded into acrobatics when she joined AntiGravity in New York City touring the world as a silk and hammock aerial performing artist. Today, she shares with us how she was able to break into the entertainment business through commercial dance work when she booked her first ever audition breakdancing in an Old Navy commercial. From there, she made herself known by reaching out to reputable stunt coordinators in the industry and was able to form long term working relationships that lead her to double for some of Hollywood’s biggest female stars, Uma Therman, Cameron Diaz, Kaitlin Olson, Taylor Swift, Angelina Jolie and Blake Lively, just to name a few.

Today, she breaks down the nuts and bolts of the stunt industry by walking us through the booking process for stunt performers, the role that SAG plays in ensuring their safety and well-being on set, and the importance of knowing your camera angles in performance. She emphasizes that above all, training and persistence is what will build you a long lasting successful career. For her, that hard work has resulted in over 100 credits to show over the course of her 15 year career.

    S2E04. Playgrounds.

    KYD 093 - Gattaca

    KYD 093 - Gattaca

Hoo boy, darlings!  Who would have thought the stylish 90s sci-fi film Gattaca could bring out such intense feelings in your hosts?  Certainly not your hosts, that's for sure.

Vincent (Ethan Hawke) dreams of becoming an astronaut and exploring Titan, one of Saturn's moons.  But in a world where humans are genetically modified to be exceptional, natural born Vincent's genetic heart condition prevents him from realizing his dream.  Until genetically perfect Jerome (Jude Law) offers to let him use his modified DNA to join the elite Gattaca space program.  Vincent has everyone fooled, until the investigation of a murder within Gattaca's walls threatens to expose him.  Uma Thurman co-stars as Vincent's beautiful co-worker who falls in love with him while tasked with investigating him.

This movie is quite a personal darling of Dan's adolescence.  But will this tale of bio manipulation win over Chrysten like Ethan Hawke wins over Uma Thurman?  Join us and find out!  And don't forget to RATE, REVIEW & SUBSCRIBE!

The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996)

The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996)

A successful veterinarian & radio show host with low self-esteem asks her model friend to impersonate her when a handsome man wants to see her. Stars Uma Thurman, Janeane Garofalo, Ben Chaplin, Jamie Foxx, James McCaffrey, Richard Coca, Stanley DeSantis, and cameos by David Cross, Mary Lynn Rajskub, and Bob Odenkirk.(from IMDb.com)
