SECRET WARS II #3: "This World Is Mine"

SECRET WARS II #3: "This World Is Mine"

This week The Beyonder takes over the whole world - but can that satisfy him? We also have a mixed bag of crossover comics; there's Derek's favorite ever issue of The Incredible Hulk and there's an issue of Daredevil that saw Denny O'Neil quit the book. It's a mess, but is it purposefully recalling the temptation of Christ in the desert?

Next week: the Beyonder tries to understand love. We have some crossover action again, but be aware: there is one crossover comic that is hard to find. It's not on the Marvel Unlimited app because it's Rom: Space Knight, which was a licensed book. But fear not, we have a link to where you can read the issue.

    This week's homework:
    Secret Wars II #4
    Alpha Flight #28
    Avengers #261
    Dazzler #40
    Rom #72

That Rom comic can be found right here. And if you like it, be aware that Marvel struck a deal with Hasbro and they will be releasing a Rom omnibus in the future! Look out for it.

SECRET WARS II #2: "I'll Take Manhattan!"

SECRET WARS II #2: "I'll Take Manhattan!"

When is a crossover not a crossover? When it happens in only one panel of the comic book in question, I'd say.

This week we follow the Beyonder to New York City, where he bumbles around and learns to poop. Then we get two fantastic Spider-Man crossover comics and a Fantastic Four issue that is, crossover or not, just kind of bad.

Next week: the Beyonder takes over the world! Here's your homework:

    Secret Wars II #3
    Avengers #260
    Daredevil #223
    The Incredible Hulk #312

    SECRET WARS II #1: "Earthfall"

    SECRET WARS II #1: "Earthfall"

This week we're doing a big pivot. Now that Secret Invasion has finished we have decided to not return to X-Men: The Animated Series just yet. Instead we're going to spend the next few weeks reading Secret Wars II and all of the associate crossovers. Yes, it's a trip back to 1985 to talk about the granddaddy of all crossover event series. Secret Wars II is weird and shaggy and an awful lot of fun, even if it isn't exactly one of the great comic book storylines.

    This week we cover:
    Secret Wars II #1
    New Mutants #30
    Captain America #308
    Uncanny X-Men #196
    Iron Man #197
All of these are available on Marvel Unlimited with a subscription.

These crossovers really run the gamut from making Secret Wars II the main focus to almost totally ignoring the events of the comic. And they run the gamut from great to kind of dull, and also Kitty Pryde says the N word. Seriously.

54: The Downfall of ❌ + News and More!

A few weeks ago we gushed about the X-Men that were, but there were some really rocky times post-2000. The Fall of the Mutants is a classic X-Men crossover, but watching it happen in real time wasn't nearly as enjoyable. Let's talk about it.

    X-Minisode #1 - May 2001

    X-Minisode #1 - May 2001

The time has come for the long-anticipated, overwhelmingly-demanded, hotly-solicited return of X-Men minisodes. Basically, we didn't have any ideas for a minisode this week so instead Monte is talking about X-Men.

The stories discussed in this minisode are:
New X-Men (2001) #114-116 "E is for Extinction" by Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely
X-Treme X-Men (2001) #1-3 "Now, It Begins" by Chris Claremont & Salvador Larroca
Uncanny X-Men (1963) #394 "Playing God" by Joe Casey & Ian Churchill

Next week we will all be back in a regular episode talking about Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #1-6 with first-time guest Ben from Not a Hoax! Not a Dream! podcast. Melissa and Monte appeared on Not a Hoax! Not a Dream! to talk about Jean Grey. Give that episode a listen here and be sure to check out the rest of Ben's episodes as well.

Monte's theme this season is best-selling superhero comics of all time. Veronica's theme is stories from the DC Young Adults graphic novel imprint.

    Season 4 Finale: Tournament Bracket

    Season 4 Finale: Tournament Bracket

Legend states that every nine weeks (or so), eight comic books face off in a vicious one-on-one tournament to determine the best among them. The comic that comes out on top earns the right to say that Monte, Melissa, and Veronica laud and venerate that comic, for all of time. It is the greatest (meaningless) honor that can ever be bestowed on a humble comic book. Please listen, to see which comic from Season 4 acquires this great and terrible blessing... and curse.

Monte's theme for this season was Magneto. Veronica's theme was teenage superheroes.

Next week we will be posting our collaborative episode with The Colored Pages Book Club podcasters, Marci and Ako. Please check out their podcast and social media. We will be discussing Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: Full Moon, an omnibus collection containing issues #13-24.

The week after that begins Season 5, in which Monte's theme is cult classic comics adapted to the screen, and Veronica's theme is Detectives and Mysteries. We'll be starting off with The Walking Dead.

    S4E6 - Magneto: Infamous

    S4E6 - Magneto: Infamous

Magneto's just, like, really complex, you know? No one understands him. He doesn't even understand himSELF, man. He's just too complicated for that. I mean, look at everything he's been through!

Check out the beautiful, well-crafted, subtle... or, um, SUBDUED story of Magneto: Infamous (with background reading of Uncanny X-Men Vol 3, issue #16), where we follow Magneto on the bloody trail of a serial mutant killer. Which is bad enough, but is it actually even worse?

Veronica's theme for this season is teenage superheroes. Monte's theme is Magneto stories.

Next week we will be reading Ms. Marvel, vol. 3, #1-5. Please read along!

    S4E4 - Magneto: Not A Hero

If you remember one thing about Magneto...

Magneto's working with the X-Men, Joseph and Astra are back, Cyclops is wearing cargo shorts--anything can happen in Magneto: Not A Hero,  other than Magneto failing to BRING. THE. DRAMA!

Veronica's theme for this season is teenage superheroes. Monte's theme is Magneto stories.

Next week we will be reading Runaways, issues #1-6. We'd love for you to read along with us.

    Pho Thanksgiving
The world has truly had a big loss this past month. But still we are called to a time of Thanksgiving. We are grateful and thankful for the time that we have here on this planet with the greats. Through the times we spend with those we love, with those that create and those that inspire us, we are can take heart and live to impact others in the same way that we have been impacted. True Believers, let us not become weary in doing good. But rather, let us be motivated by those that have come before. They have fought the good fight and have paved the way for greatness. Through the stories that have made us reach for the stars, we can turn to the next generation and do the same. Create and inspire. Remember that with Great Power also comes Great Responsibility. It is now our turn to become the hero. You will be missed, Stan. Excelsior! Now seems as good a time as any to mention our sponsors. We are sponsored by DCBService.com. Secret Ultron Bunny Wars

    Secret Ultron Bunny Wars
Bunnies with Darth Vader helmets, spraying toilets, thousands of dollars worth of damage, and kissing in church. All this and more we cover in our "Comic Book Podcast." Alright, can't we just call a spade a spayed? Do we really have to keep up with this charade? (what are you, rhyming now?) I feel like we just don't talk about comics anymore. (What are you talking about? We talked for like two whole hours on Age of Ultron and Secret Wars!) I know, I know. But really, how does that compare to the time we spend on farm stories and kid stories and muscular movie star stories? (I don't talk about muscular movie star stories all that much!) Oh you don't? I feel like I'm constantly inundated with your chiseled abs and your cut pectorals and your glamour hair and your pouty lips and your sparse facial hair. (I think you may have some real issues, there bro.) Now seems as good a time as any to mention our sponsors. We are sponsored by DCBService.com. Soooooo...I always come on here every time we put an episode out and just write whatever comes to mind and then try to link it to the show somehow. This little excerpt of my life truly is a glimpse into all that I hold dear as a person. This is my creative outlet, my ongoing work of nonfiction...my Mona Lisa, if you will. And that's why things are going to change around here. Yep! Things...they are a-changin'. Yes, sir! A brand new day! I day of pondering and reflecting. A day of showing my true self to the world. A day of drinking from the firehose of inspiration, of sitting near the bush, of letting it all show through. Of living my life as an agent of the night. As a spector of things to come. As a man in white--riding on a care and a wing--roaming through the city with a straightened tie and a mask to show who I really am. Because the face I was born with is not who I am! The life I am living is NOT my life. It is the reverse of time and space as I am truly being REAL to you right now! My aspirations sit in stark review to the world. I am the Jackie Dowsett Ballinger of my generation! I am the Jake Lockley of the century! It's time I came out as who I truly am! I am Ferly Prado!!!
