    What Makes A Legislator Effective?

    What Makes A Legislator Effective?

When it comes to passing actual legislation, putting it forward and getting it all the way through the process, it can be difficult to measure exactly which legislators are effective. Not to mention which types of legislators tend to be more effective, moderates or extremists? And does majority-party membership increase effectives?

In an innovative new paper, “Effective Lawmaking Across Congressional Eras”, University of Pittsburgh professor of political science Max Goplerud proposes a new measure of legislative effectiveness that may help us to answer some of these complex questions.

    Blake Hinson Has Gone Nuclear

    Blake Hinson Has Gone Nuclear

Friend of the Show & Returning Guest Mike joins us to talk basketball after a HUGE week. Blake Hinson went nuclear in Cameron Indoor to take down #7 Duke on the road to snap Pitt out of a cold funk of losing 4 games in their last 5. Of course we've got to talk about it! Pitt follows it up with a solid win against GT, so we're back discussing the expectations and realistic goals of the team, how they've grown, Jaland Lowe/Bub Carrington, Fede, and what we want to see going down the stretch (and uniforms).

Pitt football also got two gifts this week. A starting QB in spring ball (Nate Yarnell), and their schedule was released from the ACC offices and we're salivating over it. We're getting our hopes up way too early. Again. Also discussing Eli Holstein and Pitt's QB decisions in depth with Mike on the show.

The Last Supper of The Pop Tarts Mascot

The Last Supper of The Pop Tarts Mascot

    We're back! Happy New Year!

There's a lot to talk about. Two banger playoff semifinals to close out the 4-team era, a great national championship game to look forward to, and breaking down what's going wrong for Pitt Basketball. This also includes a live breakdown of the Pop Tarts Mascot's holy flesh being consumed.

Warum Moritz Schmoranzer im kommenden Jahr an der Pitt studieren und Football spielen wird und nicht im sonnigen Miami. Warum selbst gesicherte NIL-Deals ihn nicht haben schwach werden lassen. Are you truly ready for change? | LIVE from Pittsburgh MiniCon

Are you truly ready for change? | LIVE from Pittsburgh MiniCon

In this episode, Doug sits down with 5 guests at the Pittsburgh MiniCon convention put on by Franklin. The topic—change readiness. Every person and every organization is grappling with change readiness in some way.

At the organizational level we discuss the importance of listening, bringing elements of nostalgia into new spaces, involving multiple generations in decision-making, and maintaining a flexible attitude.

On a personal level we need to accept and learn from failure when trying new things, we need to value the blending of fresh perspectives with institutional wisdom, and realize that change often brings new relationships and opportunities.

During this episode you'll hear from:

    Jane Hallinan from Perkins Eastman

Sanela Schnitgen from University of Pittsburgh

    Beverly Shelby from AE Works

Pamela Austin from Burns Scalo Real Estate

    Ralph Dallier from Franklin

This episode was inspired by an episode The Disrupted Workforce with Warren Berger.

Breathing New Life Into Patient Care and Provider Wellness - Dr. Michelle Thompson, Medical Director of the Lifestyle Medicine Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center

Breathing New Life Into Patient Care and Provider Wellness - Dr. Michelle Thompson, Medical Director of the Lifestyle Medicine Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center

If you get nothing else from listening to this memorable episode of Raise the Line, you’ll at least have the chance to do a breathing exercise in real time along with host Shiv Gaglani and his guest, Dr. Michelle Thompson, who is triple board certified in lifestyle, integrative, and osteopathic family medicine. Dr. Thompson has come to rely on a breathing practice for her own daily wellbeing and offers to do it along with all of her patients as well as countless medical students, residents and colleagues. In fact, as a strong advocate for provider wellness, she's created full-day programs for physicians and nurses to learn tools like breathwork for resilience and self-care. “Self-care is not selfish. If we are caring for ourselves, we are more available to others,” she explains. In addition to her role as medical director of the Lifestyle Medicine Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Thompson is a national force in establishing lifestyle medicine programs in health systems across the country, as nearly 100 organizations have done.  Taking it a step further, UPMC is building a new hospital in the city that Thompson says is going to have a “lifestyle village” on the first three floors to facilitate the efforts of community members to choose healthy habits. Join us as we explore the impact lifestyle and mind-body medicine is having on patient care, employee wellness and medical education in Pittsburgh and far beyond in this perspective-shifting conversation.

Alceo Dossena: The Forger Who Sued the Men Who Sold His Forgeries

Alceo Dossena: The Forger Who Sued the Men Who Sold His Forgeries

Sculptor Alceo Dossena was an impactful figure in the art world of the early 20th century because he created forged masterpieces capable of fooling even the most expert of experts. Critics attributed his pieces to famous classical and Renaissance artists, and his works were sold through dealers and purchased by museums and collectors. But in an unexpected turn of events, the forger sued the dealers who sold his work.

Finding Collaboration with Pitt Athletic Director Heather Lyke

Finding Collaboration with Pitt Athletic Director Heather Lyke

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Pitt Athletic Director Heather Lyke about finding collaboration.

Heather is currently the Athletic Director at the University of Pittsburgh and one of just six women ADs leading an athletic department in one of the Power Five conferences. Heather was a student-athlete at Michigan and returned to the world of college athletics after law school, where she’s stayed ever since. She previously worked at the University of Cincinnati and Ohio State before becoming the Athletic Director at Eastern Michigan and finally at Pitt. While at Ohio State, she and five others who shared her aspirations of becoming an AD banded together to form what they called the group of six. Rather than feeling like they were in competition, they would share opportunities to help each other build skills, setting them all up for long-term success.

    We talk about:

    • Avoiding the sunk cost fallacy when it comes to pursuing a career option other than the one you trained for.
    • How to stop focusing on failing to achieve a big goal and instead start celebrating the courage it took to say it out loud and go after it.
    • Building teams that can support us and help execute our vision.
