    RSWC #128 Amy Lucas

    RSWC #128 Amy Lucas

    Riding Shotgun With Charlie

    #128 Amy Lucas

    Steel & Stilettos Firearms Training

    USCCA Instructor

It’s great to have friends in the gun community who know the people I don’t.  Amy Lucas was suggested to me by Patrick Collins (RSWC #091).  Earlier this month, I was in Dallas for AMMcon and Amy was in Fort Worth for the USCCA Expo. She was able to get away for a bit to hop in the Stagecoach. By the way, the “Stagecoach” was provided by Cheryl Todd (RSWC #060) from Gun Freedom Radio! Thanks, girl!

Amy is a retired corrections officer from the metro Detroit area. She started her career before she could carry a firearm.  Then she got into training with firearms, CPR and everything else. She spent 20 years holding down the fort at a maximum security prison. While she was there, she got lots of training in many areas of self defense and personal protection. She also became a SWAT team leader, chasing down escapees and securing the prison when someone snuck in a firearm.

After she retired, she became a private investigator and followed people around.  She realized that she’s got lots of training, skill, and knowledge. She decided that she wanted to take all the skill & knowledge she has and give it to the public.  That’s when she started Steel & Stilettos Firearm Training. S&S started at a great time, just before March 2020.  During the next year and a half, people were craving to have firearms for self defense and they needed training.

Steel & Stilettos is only a few years old. She had been training corrections officers for years before getting into the civilian marketplace. Once she started, she couldn’t stop.  She got involved with the USCCA and became an instructor.  Then she was really fast tracked to becoming a Training Councilor (TC) for them. This month, she earned the title Senior Training Councilor!

One of the things she finds most rewarding is training women.  Ninety-five percent of her clients are women, but she doesn’t have any issues instructing men. Besides the USCCA courses and the course to get the Michigan Concealed Pistol License, she also teaches a refresher course for when clients need to renew their Michigan CPL.  She has also added some other female firearm and self defense (Krav Maga) instructors to her staff at Steel & Stilettos.

Amy was also at the Rick Ector Ladies Event this past August in Detroit.  She was the Chief Range Safety Officer for the event, running the line at Top Gun Shooting Sports in Taylor, MI. This is her second year at the event. Rick’s Ladies Event has been growing for 10 years.  His goal this year was 4,000 trained in 2 days on firearm safety and handgun basics. Instructors from all over the country came to help with the event.

Amy was a really wonderful woman to spend some time with. She’s very busy with Steel & Stilettos Firearm Training and her spare time is taken up being a private contractor for the US Marshalls.

Despite the pandemic, Amy has been busy instructing and growing her business. She’s very excited about her future and where the firearm and safety communities are taking her.

    Beth Alcazar
    Pacifiers & Peacemakers

    USCCA
    The DC Project

I met Beth Alcazar at SHOT Show 2017. The following month, I saw her again at a concealed carry fashion show I was emceeing in Cleveland.  And I’ve seen her at every GPRC since 2017 and even in Washington DC at a DC Project event. That isn’t just how she’s everywhere.  She writes a blog for the USCCA called Pacifiers & Peacemakers, and she teaches the teachers for the USCCA as well.  She’s also a board member of BamaCarry.  She’s one of the busiest women in the gun community and I was able to catch up with her in Birmingham, AL, during the RSWC Southern Tour 2020.  She did start off with some Southern Hospitality and a number of gifts from local businesses and trivia of Alabama. You can check that out on the RSWC Facebook page from August 23, 2020. She also brought her 2A blanket, Twizzlers, and a book for me.

Beth got her start as a writer in the shooting/hunting/outdoor industry, but wanted to learn how the business and marketing worked. She was able to make a lot of connections in the industry, which ends up helping her later in life. She is a real ‘word nerd’ and that helps with her writings. When she found out she was being let go from a job, she reached out to someone with the USCCA and they enjoyed her writing as a ‘mom with a gun’ and that gave her a different perspective than others. She loves what they do, with educating gun owners and she pursued writing, making videos, and working with them.  She blends the importance of gun safety and the fundamentals, but keeps the fun of shooting throughout her courses.

We move from using firearms to knives to other tools for self defense.  We talk about how the mind is the weapon and everything else is a tool, which leads into DGUs (defensive gun uses) and the possibility of a presence of a gun gives many the ‘psychological stop’ to a bad guy.

She’s the Alabama State Director of The DC Project.  She’s looking for and trying to get more women active at the state level to talk to politicians and share their stories about whey they own firearms.  And she’s involved with BamaCarry and testified for both groups.  We also talked about Alabama gun laws, about open carry and how she helped things move forward before ‘the virus’ happened.

We also drove near a local shopping center and the location where several people decided to use a firearm over the protests over some goings on. It’s made her and others reconsider shopping in this area. She also tells us that there are ‘vapor dogs’ at the center which are trained to sniff out gunpowder.

Beth is really a wonderful person and so much fun to be around. Every time we see each other, there’s plenty of laughing and smiling. I’m sure you’ll pick up on this from watching this episode. You can find her blog, Facebook page, and all the groups she’s involved with below. She really is on top of all things that are beneficial for the female shooters in the world! And her wordsmith background brings out an elegance and imagery that others aren’t able to do.

“Women usually get into guns for a specific reason, self defense. We’re still the more victimized gender.”

“I still go back to teach the end user class over and over again. They give me joy for such different reasons.”

“The DC Project has really inspired me to do a lot of things I never would have imagined I would do.”

5 Things you should know about shotguns

5 Things you should know about shotguns

I was listening to a conversation between two men, (younger than myself that were) saying how boring shotguns were. I decided not to interrupt. Instead I engaged Michael J. Woodland about it.
Michael J. Woodland wanted us to try something different on this week where we chatted online as we share this conversation about shotguns. I spoke outside Let me know what you think of our dialogue. If you were involved in a self defense shooting and had the choice between a rifle and a shotgun, would the court penalize you for using the AR-15 over the shotgun? What do you think.

This week on the Black Man With A Gun Show I’d like to wish all mothers in my circles a Happy Mothers Day.  You would think with a title like that I would talk about women and guns but all I have is gratitude and love for the many mothers I know that have helped me.  I don’t have any catchy stories or anything right now.  MJ Woodland has something to say about new gun purchases.  There is some news and Armed Citizen stories. And Kenn has something to say about gun controls Frequently Asked Questions about registration.
