169: A Woman Warrior Saves Lives with Rayna Gangi on Change It Up Radio with Paula Shaw

In this episode of Change It Up Radio, Dr. Rayna Gangi joins me to talk about women in the military, navigating Veteran Affairs, veteran suicide prevention, and how we can all do more to honor veterans for their service.

My guest today, Dr. Rayna Gangi, trained as a radio communication engineer and was ready to be one of only a handful of Women Marines deployed to Vietnam. Two days before her embarkment, multiple vaccines paralyzed her from the waist down, and she spent the next several months in the hospital. Rayna fought her way back to mobility and was honorably discharged in 1971.

Through her personal experience, Rayna became more aware of other veterans with disabilities when she approached the VA after her disability had returned and she was no longer able to work. Her experience with the VA was not unlike many who have reached out for help, but the most impactful awareness was for the number of veteran suicides, and the numbers were staggering.

Rayna has since began counseling veterans suffering with PTSD pro bono. She has been focused on prevention and education so that others can help veterans and so veterans can be honored as they should be for their service.

Today, Rayna joins me to talk about the difficulties she faced as a woman navigating the military after enlisting in the U.S. Marines in 1968 during the height of the Vietnam War, sharing the way that she and other women were treated in comparison to their male counterparts. Rayna also shares her struggles with dealing with the VA for disability compensation, and her mission to help prevent and put an end to veteran suicide.

My conversation with sculptor Dan Snarr. We discussed his work "Proud" which we unveiled in the Tooele Veterans Memorial Park. It was the 1st in the Nation to discuss the devastating problem of Veteran Suicide. We also discussed Coach Jerry Sloan from the Utah Jazz, and his sculpture of the legendary coach. We discussed Dan's intent to place this monument at the Vivint Smart Home Arena with previous bronze monuments of Stockton and Malone. Unfortunately since the taping of this episode, we lost Coach Sloan. We were joined by phone with Nashville recording artist, J. Marc Bailey who played and integral part in raising money for the "Proud" Monument. J. Marc Bailey joined the call with friend and singer/songwriter Russ Stallons. 030: The Courage to Change Your Mind

030: The Courage to Change Your Mind

Today we are honoring our Veterans in appreciation for all that they've done for us, and we'll also be discussing some of the detrimental challenges that they are faced with.

Today is Veterans Day, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which brought World War I to an end in 1918. We are dedicating this show to all of our Veterans for their gracious service to us all. Not only will we be reflecting on the incredible strength of our active duty military members and veterans, but we will also be discussing the challenges they face and what we can do to help.

My first guest, Devorah Gottesman, has a robust music career that has spanned the globe, entertaining hundreds of thousands of music fans. She shares her story of the true American spirit of kindness, inclusiveness, and ingenuity that opens the heart to celebrate freedom and joy with the sole purpose of unification. Devorah also shares the song that she wrote and sang coast to coast during one of her bicycling fundraising events for non-profits serving Veterans.

Rob Wittmier, U.S. Army Veteran and Founder of the National Alliance to End Veteran Suicide, was shocked when he first learned of the statistics on Veteran suicide. Today he joins us to discuss the stigma around suicide and mental health, and how these issues are being addressed a lot more today. Rob shares how his non-profit helps to create a community for Veterans so that they're never alone, regardless of their military branch or era of service.

Colonel Chris Richie, who is a career Aviation Command and Control (C2) officer, also joins us today to help wrap up this show celebrating our Veterans. He shares some positive insight into what's going on with our military today and discusses the incredible impact of providing those that are struggling with the power of hope.

    We Discuss:

    • Ending Veteran suicide in our nation through education, resources, research and community
    • The impact of the stigma and discrimination that often surrounds mental health
    • How the National Alliance to End Veteran Suicide is addressing suicide deaths among Veterans

Episode 121: Round 3 with Dan Johnson

Episode 121: Round 3 with Dan Johnson
Dan Johnson is on the Defining Audacity Mt. Rushmore. He's a badass. It's only fitting that he became the first guest to make his third appearance on the show - this time for a video shoot for our new YouTube channel. This time around, we talk about his dad, who killed himself when Dan was 10. We also talk about Dan going to jail. Also on this episode, I talk to local woman who marked something off her life list by watching 13 hours of movies in one day. AND we introduce our listeners to the inspirational Brendon Burchard. #liveonpurpose

The Road Less Traveled: Dan Johnson

The Road Less Traveled: Dan Johnson
I hand-picked Dan Johnson to be inaugural guest on The Road Less Traveled, the live-audience version of the Defining Audacity Radio Show. He did NOT disappoint. His sound is so amazing...his story is so powerful. Dan was already a member of the Defining Audacity Family, but now he has cemented himself atop the Mount Rushmore of this radio show. #liveonpurpose

Dan Johnson: Speaking Up & Saving Lives

Dan Johnson: Speaking Up & Saving Lives
Dan Johnson's father took his own life when Dan was 10 years old. He was a veteran who struggled with depression and mental illness. Dan went from being angry about losing his best friend to speaking up about the issue of veteran suicide. He said he's just now starting to realize that his father's death actually has the chance to save so many more lives. #liveonpurpose
