    20 - From Whence We've Come Pt. 1

This week, season one draws to a close, and we see it off with a full review of everything we've covered thus far.
It's been a fun ride thus far, and I hope all of you decide to stick with me on this journey through the history of space exploration. Thanks for listening!

CORRECTION: I misspoke in the last section and said we were on Project Mercury's doorstep. I meant Gemini. That's what I get for going off script.

Technology in Sport: A race against the machine?

Technology in Sport: A race against the machine?

Professional sport is a world where individuals can earn as much as a decent-sized business, and teams have evolved to become multi-national corporations. And where there's money, technology follows.

In this episode, we'll be meeting with amazing people at the cutting edge of sports technology to look at how data has become a key part of the field - and looking at what organisations around the world can learn from the performance analysis revolution.

We're speaking to Professor Steve Haake of Sheffield Hallam University about the revolution in data capture and analytics that came about with mobile computing and wearable tech, and how the data revolution has augmented the materials revolution in sports for everything from training routine optimisation to predictive injury prevention.

That's something Hawk-Eye Innovations are also exploring, alongside their better known video capture and virtual refereeing systems. Global Commercial Director Peter Irwin talks us through how mass video capture from hundreds of data points and generating real-time virtual skeletons for every person on a pitch is not only helping enforce the rules, it's predicting injuries and giving strategic insights in real time.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Chief Technologist Matt Armstong-Barnes talks us through in more detail how AI and humans are interacting to create better athletes and sportsmen, and how the future of sports technology is athletes whose skills are allowed to flourish by having compute take over some of their workload. He argues AIs are getting better, but the optimum performance still comes from humans and AIs working together, especially in motorsport.

No-one understands that better than Lucas Di Grassi, driver for Formula E team ROKit Venturi Racing. He's used to taking to the track in one of the most technically advanced cars in the world, but believes that human rules are holding the sport back. He's keen to see AI take on more of a role in the field, and to that end, is leading the charge with self-driving racecars, in his 'robo race' project.

We also talk about how businesses can take advantage of a revolution in insights - getting the best data from a set to the right end users, in such a way as they can get the best advantage out of it.

2 - Dance with the Devil

2 - Dance with the Devil

We delve into a particularly dark chapter in the history of rocketry as Wernher von Braun is inducted into the German military to work on rocket projects just as the Nazi Party is coming to power. Von Braun will develop a rocket unlike any the world has seen but at the behest of one of history's most murderous regimes.

    Mike's Airborne Aloha

    Mike's Airborne Aloha

Mike Harris, host of the fantastic Why We Fly podcast, shares the story of his adventure flying around the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Back home in Tennessee, Mike owns a Piper PA-22 Tri-Pacer. But on this particular trip, he and his wife were able to rent an airplane to see Hawaii from the sky.

    Abingdon's Ferry Go-Round

    Abingdon's Ferry Go-Round

Abingdon is fully immersed in aviation and has made it her career. In these Logbook Memories, she tells the story of a pair of rather harrowing ferry flights.

Abingdon's ratings include CFI, CFII, and ATP, and she holds several type ratings. Abingdon is a respected ferry pilot. In this episode, she tells the story of a couple of her earlier ferry jobs.

When she isn't flying, Abingdon is running her business designing and selling "Adventurous watches for adventurous women". Abingdon wanted to reward herself with a new aviator watch after accomplishing a difficult goal only to find there weren't any decent women's watches available. So she got to work and designed her own.

CEO and Co-Founder of ForeFlight on building the worlds best aviation software--Tyson Weihs

CEO and Co-Founder of ForeFlight on building the worlds best aviation software--Tyson Weihs

My guest today is Tyson Weihs, the Co-Founder and CEO of ForeFlight--by far the best aviation software ever produced.

Tyson and his company Foreflight has nearly singlehandedly dragged the entire aviation industry into the future. Before Foreflight aviation software was slow, cumbersome, and obsolete as soon as you bought it. It was similar to the dashboard GPS devices you stuck to your car window. Foreflight has done to aviation software what Google Maps did to the TomTom. It works seamlessly, it's updated all the time, and every few months there's a new feature you can use.

In our conversation, we talk about what it takes to build a great team, how to harness innovation, how he manages his time, and more. Below are the full show notes with associated time stamps:

    • Where the idea of ForeFlight came from (min. 03:30)
    • Obstacles Foreflight has had to overcome (min. 08:15)
    • His biggest win (min. 12:40)
    • Building a great team and culture (min. 19:15)
    • How to manage innovation (min. 29:15)
    • Making the software useful to everyone (min. 34:00)
    • Surprises as CEO (min. 36:30)
    • How he manages his time (min. 39:30)
    • Things that increase his performance (min. 41:30)
    • Where ForeFlight is going in the future (min. 42:30)
    • Whats next (min. 49:15)

    3. Binod Puri, Nepalese Mountain Flying Pilot

    3. Binod Puri, Nepalese Mountain Flying Pilot

Holiday mountain flying special! In episode 3, we speak to senior Nepalese mountain flying captain Binod Puri right after he flies me to the "world's most dangerous airport" and back on a Czech-built Let 410 Turbolet. Lukla's Tenzing-Hillary airport is an exceptional altiport: a one-way 1.729ft (527m) sloped runway at an altitude of 9.2000ft (2800m) with an 11.7% gradient, a cliff on one end and a stone wall on the other, towering mountains on all sides and unpredictable, fast-changing weather (as we'll see). Should you ever wish to scale Mount Sagarmatha, aka Everest, this is the closest serviced airport you can fly to.

    We talk about:

    • Why the margin of error is extremely low in Lukla
    • Some of the risks involved in mountain flying
    • STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) aircraft you might see
    • How (and where) Nepalese pilots train
    • The importance of CRM (cockpit resource management)
    • The language that pilots use on the radio
    • How aviation has changed over the years in Nepal
    • Advice for new pilots and anxious passengers

If you are unfamiliar with Lukla airport, this video of the approach on YouTube should give you a good idea of what it's like. You'll also find another video on the Ground Effect Podcast Instagram page I took from inside the cockpit that shows how close to the mountains we get and how at multiple occasions you get to hear the EGPWS (Enhanced Ground Proxity Warning Sensor) screaming "Terain! Pull up!".

Thank you once again to to Cpt. Puri for this incredible experience and for taking the time to chat with us about his 37 years of experience as a mountain flying pilot in Nepal.

As always, we're a new podcast with a lot to learn so send us your thoughts, comments and suggestions either by email (ground.effect[@]neustadt[.]fr) or via Twitter (@thegroundeffect).

    1. Antoine, European A320 Pilot and Aviation Podcast Host

In our first episiode, we speak to Antoine, an A320 pilot, a French-language aviation podcast host and previously an air traffic controller in Switzerland. We talk about:

    • How his parents were glider pilots and how he started flying very young
    • How he set his parents' field on fire by playing with rockets
    • What it was like to be an air traffic controller
    • What the pilot training process is like in Europe
    • How flying a modern jet aircraft compares with small general aviation ones
    • The importance of communication in the cockpit
    • The notion of personal minimums
    • The differences of private flying in the US vs. Europe

Some technical terms we use in the podcast (I'll be careful to explain these more in-podcast in upcoming episodes):

    • ATPL - Airline Transport Pilot License (European equivalent of ATP)
    • CPL - Commercial Pilot License
    • VFR - Visual Flight Rules (or visual flying, by looking out the window)
    • IFR - Instrument Flight Rules (or instrument flying, regardless of visibility)
    • IR - Instrument Rating (rating that allows you to fly IFR)
    • ME - Multi-Engine (rating that allows you to fly multi-engine planes)
    • MCCJOC - Multi-crew Cooperation & Jet Orientation Course
    • Class Alfa - Class A (as oposed to B, C, D, E, F or G) airspace, usually reserved for commercial aircraft, mostly jets.

If you speak French (or if you're just curious), check out Antoine's French-language aviation podcast: Parlons Aviation

We love hearing from you, so send us your thoughts, comments and suggestions either by email (ground.effect[@]neustadt[.]fr) or via Twitter (@thegroundeffect).
