    Celebrating Companions: Vicki

    Celebrating Companions: Vicki

Vicki is the first companion to choose a trip on the TARDIS! The first "pea in the pod" with the Doctor, she departs to prove her loyalty to her lover Troilus and re-write a myth. We didn't have her along for as long as we would have liked, and the fandom has somewhat forgotten her, but Vicki is a fantastic companion who sets the stage for later characters who link with the Doctor because they share his sense of adventure and fun.

Let's take a moment to celebrate Vicki, later renamed Cressida: the great adventurer, the rebel, the girl who could make the Doctor giggle, the woman who goes on to found Rome.

FYI: Sorry this is coming out a couple days late! I was closing out the semester and could not record this weekend. I also accidentally recorded the first part of this on my computer mic:-( I didn't have time to re-record and this is already late, so uploading as is. I will keep an eye on this for the future, however.

#4 Sustainable swimwear with Vicki Jones of Sand & Palm

#4 Sustainable swimwear with Vicki Jones of Sand & Palm
In Episode 4 I welcome Vicki Jones – clothes designer, surfer and founder of sustainable swimwear brand Sand & Palm – to the breakfast table.

Vicki established Sand & Palm four years ago having trained and worked in activewear fashion for a decade.  She was determined to set up an sustainable clothing company, despite being warned by industry insiders not to market her products as ‘eco’ for fear it would put people off buying them.  But Vicki persevered, led by a passionate belief that sustainable clothing must be the future.  Fast forward a few years, and Vicki’s swimwear, made from regenerated ocean plastics, is a quintessential slow fashion brand, consciously anchoring itself against the tide of fast fashion that has swept us all along, and demonstrating that style and sustainability can go hand in hand.

During the episode we discuss the ways in which Vicki has consciously crafted each element of her business to be as sustainable as possible, from the fabrics she uses to packaging, marketing and using an ethical bank account.  We also talk about the social and environmental problems with fast fashion, and how principles of slow, sustainable fashion are starting to become more mainstream.

Check out the podcast web page where you will find more information about Sandy & Palm, a selection of recipes from our breakfast, and information about Episode 4’s two supporters – Horizon Inspired’s online meditation courses, and Lars & Margo’s coffee beans (along with discount codes for both): www.tiatamblyn.com/podcast

I’d love to know your thoughts, do join the conversation, email me tia@botelet.com or message via Instagram @breakfast_and_beyond

Please do subscribe to the podcast, rate, review and share this episode with friends and family who would enjoy it – thank you so much!

    Batmania '89

    Batmania '89

We know you’ve seen Batman ‘89, Bat-Fanatics, but fear not because Joe and Kendall barely focus on the plot! Instead they dive into the film’s pop culture significance. Did you know this movie spawned one of the greatest cartoon series of all time? Of course. But did you know it also single handedly created the comic industry boon that might have also been the reason for its bust? Yeah, this movie was that influential. So, attach your grapple gun to your utility belt and prepare to get nuts as we ascend through the smoke into the most jarring third act in Bat-History!

Just started listening recently and love hearing the stuff you put out for me to get through the day .Despite the red hair, I'm only 10 percent Irish, but my mother clings to that 10 percent and I can appreciate it on my own too. Keep it up!"

Tom Cochran emailed: "Hi Mark, Tom C from the highlands of western Colorado. Just recently found your podcast from a post on my Clan’s Facebook page. Have listened to several now and find the diversity of music refreshing and matching my own musical tastes which are eclectic. I enjoy everything from classical, to musical theatre, classic rock, folk, and of course Celtic music in its many forms. My wife and I along with son Brendan and friend Jonathan make up Oran Mor. We have been playing a lot these past few months locally and are planning our first recording in the coming year. So I would appreciate any advice. You can check out our web page at oranmormusic.com. Favorite influences include, Dougie McIean, Runrig, Battlefield Band, Old Blind Dogs, Silly Wizard, Albannach, The Elders and the Chieftains. I am really liking the new groups your show is turning me onto; new fave Runa. I look forward to many hours of great music. Keep up the good work."

Junya emailed: "hi. im from Japan. im a very casual listener, and i dont have the habit of checking the song titles and artists names, so i have no knowledge, but have been listening to your podcast for, probably more than 10 years. i felt like listening to such music in Christmas time in December, over 10years ago, (im not Christian and l am japanese living in Japan, so i dont have a chance to experience the Westerners' christmas festivity, but i always long to join their Christmas mood) and tried searching, then your website was the top result. somehow irish and celtic music sounds very nice to me even though im not a fan of any ethnic type of music very much.

the song i liked from this Halloween podcast was The Rogue's Hellbound Sleigh, with the club music like beautiful and cool elements mixed in."

    122: The Myth Makers

    122: The Myth Makers

"Mightiest of warriors, greatest in battle, humblest of your servants."

Well they do say learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all, Achilles, but this is tendon towards arrogance.

Yes, this month it's the swords and sandals epic, The Myth Makers, in which Steven gets a new outfit, Vicki gets a new name and the Doctor gets out of a breezy solo flight into the big city.

They meet a jolly Jack Tar, a sotto voce soldier, a shrieking soothsayer and a king who chucks his Troys out of the Priam (yes, we know that doesn't make any sense but Donald Cotton's puns are getting to us).

So is there really a Doctor in the horse?

Will Vicki find true love with the time-weathered teen, Troilus?

And will Jim and Martin award The Myth Makers legendary status or did it ring as hollow as a Trojan Horse?

Listen to find the answer to some of these questions and less.

Legends Podcast #429; Batman (30th Anniversary)

Legends Podcast #429; Batman (30th Anniversary)

Thirty years ago, Batman swept into movie theaters, ushering in the modern era of comic book movie-making. Directed by Tim Burton, starring Jack Nicholson as the Joker, Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale, and Michael Keaton as the man who launched fifty thousand letters protesting his casting as Bruce Wayne. Despite a troubled production which saw a writer’s strike, budget overruns, stolen film reels, and intense skepticism of the film’s tone and direction, Batman became the biggest movie of the year and fifth highest-grossing film of all time by the end of its run. Batman became one of the biggest movie franchises of the ‘90s, with another film by Burton and Keaton, and two more directed by Joel Schumacher with Val Kilmer and George Clooney taking turns in the Batsuit. But thirty years later, after Christopher Nolan’s super-successful trilogy with Christian Bale, Ben Affleck’s less-successful turn, and the casting of Robert Pattinson as The Batman in Matt Reeves upcoming film, does this version still light up our Batsignal? Or is the joke on us?

Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! These discussions will be spoiler filled and may explicit language, so consider yourself warned.

The Key To The Chakras with Vicki Howie

The Key To The Chakras with Vicki Howie
The Key to the Chakras with Vicki Howie What is a chakra? A chakra is an energy center in the human body that receives, processes and transmits information about particular aspects of being and experience. The Sanskrit word “chakra” literally means “wheel,” which is an apt name for these energy portals since they rotate in a circular fashion just like a wheel. It helps to think of the chakras as revolving doors between the human body and the outside world. The chakras are created by currents of energy that are continually moving in the three dimensions of 3-D reality while interacting with the areas on the body that are most concentrated with nerve ganglia. There are six different currents — one “positive” and one “negative” for each of the three dimensions of physical reality (See more info below) Vicki Howie is an expert on chakras. Her passion in life is to help you expand into your highest potential as a physical-spiritual being. To accomplish this, Vicki has dedicated herself to years of intensive study in yoga (ERYT), energy healing (Certified Sitha Healer), hypnotherapy (Master CHt), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (Master Practitioner) and Behavior Communications (M.A.). Vicki’s extensive background as a yoga teacher (over 1000 hours of Advanced Teacher Training alone!) gives her a deep, bio-energetic understanding of your chakras and the knowledge to help you expand into your most vibrant Self. Her natural and learned abilities as an energy healer allow her to help you shift into a higher vibratory state that calls forth more success in every area of your life — from fulfilling love and sexuality, to vibrant health, unlimited wealth, and more. Website Link:  ============================ In the most commonly accepted chakra model, the seven main bodily chakras are: 1st Chakra – Tailbone – Red – “Muladhara” 2nd Chakra – Sacral – Orange – “Svadisthana” 3rd Chakra – Solar Plexus – Yellow – “Manipura” 4th Chakra – Heart – Green – “Anahata” 5th Chakra – Throat – Blue – “Visuddha” 6th Chakra – 3rd Eye – Indigo – “Ajna” 7th Chakra – Crown – Violet – “Sahasrara” The seventh chakra resides outside the body at the crown and facilitates complete union with the Universal Life Force, and therefore, is not related to the physical realm or any of the dualities of earth. It’s like a portal to pure spiritual essence. The six bodily chakras however, relate quite clearly to the physical body, and have an elegant and harmonious, masculine-feminine (yang-yin) organization. “Masculine” as used here, is archetypal and refers to that which is firm, steady and self-contained, while “feminine” refers to that which is soft, yielding and expansive. Also, masculine energy tends to relate to and affect the external world, while feminine energy tends to relate to and affect one’s internal world. chakra, Vicki Howie, energy healing, sacral, solar plexux, heart, 3rd eye, crown chakra, life force, energy portal, Mental Health News Radio Network, Ryan McCormick, Outer Limits of Inner Truth
