Legal Minute: 5 Must-Do’s for Virginia Tech’s FBRI to combat research fraud

Legal Minute: 5 Must-Do’s for Virginia Tech’s FBRI to combat research fraud

Virginia Tech recently received a $50 million gift from the Red Gates Foundation for Health Sciences research expansion. In light of recent news about research fraud prosecuted by the Department of Justice, it is crucial for the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute to implement robust research integrity policies.
Here are five key steps that the institute can take to address research fraud:
    1.  develop and implement a clear research integrity policy,
    2.  establish written procedures,
    3.  provide comprehensive training on research integrity,
    4.  form a research integrity committee, and
    5.  encourage the reporting of suspected misconduct.

Transferring data and knowledge gained through research into a journal that sits on a shelf won’t carry us through to creating the interdisciplinary and collaborative results we in the real world- from research and science in the field and the lab into the hands and households of the communities where it is needed to best take advantage of all dimensions and perspectives for an inclusive understanding and creative solutions of the challenges that real people and real communities face on a daily basis, at the crossroads of human, wildlife and environmental needs of tomorrow. This is the goal of Dr. Kathy Alexander PhD, Professor at Virginia Tech, Dept. of Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation at the College of Natural Resources and co-founder of the CARACAL Biodiversity Center of the Chobe Research Institute in Botswana: amplifying partnerships and integrated systems benefits that will provide tomorrow’s solutions today.

    Bruce Smith

    Bruce Smith

Bruce Smith was a dominant defensive end in the NFL. Bruce was the first overall draft pick in the 1985 NFL Draft selected by the Buffalo Bills. During his 19 season run in the league, he played for the Buffalo Bills (1985-1999) and the Washington Redskins (2000-2003). His size, strength, and speed established him as one of the most robust defensive players the league has ever seen. Bruce Smith is the NFL's all-time career sack leader with 200 sacks.

Bruce shares about his first love of basketball and how he honed his talent from the court to be a beast on the football field. Through the turn of events, he found himself excelling in football and going on to play at Virginia Tech.

    On the mic we discuss:

    • his experience with being bullied in school
    • the source of his energy on the field
    • why he chose Virginia Tech
    • his greatest opponent
    • his trip to Israel with Robert Kraft
    • why he enjoys golfing with Marcus Allen and Richard Dent
      ... and much more!

I am excited to share my insightful conversation with Bruce Smith. Sit back, relax, and get your pens ready because this is Write it Down!
