Episode 31- How does a concussion affect the brain?

"The healthcare system is really complicated, and there aren't any guidelines currently on how to care and manage TBIs. It takes multiple providers, therapists, and specialists to help pull the pieces of the puzzle together of your recovery."

In today's episode, we had Kelly Tuttle, FNP-BC, MSN, a TBI survivor, nurse practitioner, and author, who shared her enlightening recovery journey and offered advice for others on a similar path. Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) can turn lives upside down, not just for survivors but also for their families. Recovery is a challenging, uncertain process, requiring immense resilience.

Kelly's post-injury process included coping with cognitive fatigue, headaches, neck pain, and dizziness. A compelling aspect of her story is her transition from a cardiology nurse practitioner to specializing in neurology after her injury. This career pivot signifies her resilience and desire to empathize with and aid others with brain injuries.
From a TBI survivor to an advocate and author, Kelly is a beacon of hope and invaluable guidance for those on a similar path of recovery.

Episode 28 - I Can't Afford Vision Therapy! How Can I Help My Child?

Episode 28 - I Can't Afford Vision Therapy! How Can I Help My Child?

Today we have a "minisode" to celebrate the beginning of 2024. The new year already brings a new and exciting program: 4D Built to Learn.
It was developed to make vision training accessible to families all over the world. By enjoying the exciting exercises and games on a regular basis, you'll notice improved reading stamina and comprehension, reduced headaches and car-sickness, and better sports performance for your child.

4D Built to Learn works by strengthening the neural pathways related to vision. This not only improves visual skills but also enhances cognitive functions such as attention, memory, and problem-solving.

If you've noticed that your bright child is struggling more than necessary for mediocre grades, it could be related to their eyes! Things you may notice include:

    • Poor reading comprehension
    • Frequent reversals of numbers, letters, or words when reading and writing
    • Headaches
    • Car or motion sickness
    • Blurry vision up close or far away
    • Words or pictures appear to "swim" on the page.
    • Poor sports performance
    • Difficulty paying attention to one task for more than 15 minutes.
    • Clumsiness or frequent bumping into objects or people

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    (00:00) Intro
(01:38) What is 4D Built to Learn and who's it for?
    (03:08) How the program works

Episode 27- Can My OT Do My VT?

Episode 27- Can My OT Do My VT?

"We love OTs working on visual perception, and they can even do some free space depth perception and focusing flexibility exercises. However, anything farther than that? You're going to want to consult your friendly local neighborhood behavioral optometrist, and especially if they happen to have a certified optometric vision therapist working on staff with them, as myself".

Today, Jessica Liedke discusses the differences between occupational therapy and vision therapy.

While occupational therapy aims to help individuals live independently by retraining everyday skills, concentration, memory, among other things, vision therapists specialize in visual outcomes and causes for developmental delays.
Although occupational therapists have some training in visual skills, they lack the licensures to use optometric tools like lenses and prisms that vision therapists rely on.
Collaboration between OT's and VT's is definitely important for comprehensive treatment.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    (01:08) What is Occupational Therapy?
(05:02) Some of the things that OT’s don’t do
(09:25) Can OT’s do Vision Therapy?

    Occupational Therapy or Vision Therapy?

Episode 25 - Is Surgery The Only Option For My Child?

Episode 25 - Is Surgery The Only Option For My Child?

Today we discuss strabismus, an eye turn condition. We explain the various treatment options, including patching, penalization, surgery, and vision therapy and highlight the  importance of developing binocular vision.

We also cover the social and psychological impact of strabismus, the goals of treatment, and the considerations parents should make when deciding between surgery and vision therapy for their kids.
There's a great need for the two eyes to work together when treating strabismus and there are various aspects of visual function that should be considered, such as tracking skills, focusing power, depth perception, and processing abilities. The role of vision therapy in addressing these areas and improving overall visual performance is crucial.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

(00:52) What is strabismus and what are the treatments.
    (02:01) Patching or Occlusion Therapy.
    (03:46) Penalization.
(05:06) Why is it important to treat strabismus?

    • The mental, social and academic impact
    • Driving Issues
    • Amblyopia

(09:48) Goals to aim for as a parent when treating their kids’ strabismus.
(16:07) Asking the right questions to know if surgery is the right choice.
(21:18) How to access the research and integral information about strabismus.

(23:02) Why 4d Vision Gym is your best choice for vision therapy.

Episode 22 - How to Unlock Your Potential by Changing the way you See!

Episode 22 - How to Unlock Your Potential by Changing the way you See!

“We wanted our patients to feel like nothing was wrong with them. From day one we didn’t call them patients, they were members. Over the next 10 years, I see vision therapy being the household name and Built to Read being what people know.”

Today we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary, and as part of it, we are reflecting on all that has happened throughout this time, and how our vision of what vision therapy could be has evolved over time.

We discuss how we came up with the idea for our unique approach to vision therapy, centered around empowering members to transform their own perception of the world and how they interact with it.
We also talk about the importance of educating parents on the foundational skills necessary for reading, which we believe has been a key component of our success.

It's interesting how our perspective has shifted over time, from feeling like we had to be the ones to make all the changes in the world, to empowering others to facilitate change themselves with the tools to become self-sufficient and confident.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

(01:36) Our definition of vision got us to where we are now.
(04:27) The mission statement we played over and over and the evolution it brought.
(10:43) Empowering the parents and caring as one of them.
(18:52) The biggest takeaways from the past 10 years.
(25:56) The plans for the next 10 years.

Episode 21 - How Do I Combat the "Summer Slide"?

"17 to 34% of what was learned last school year is expected to be lost between May and September."

Today we're talking about "The Summer Slide", a term that refers to the documented decrease in reading ability over the summer months, when kids are not being made to read or do homework.

To combat this, we've prepared a couple of summer reading programs, to strengthen their visual skills: The 4D Built to Read program is recommended to address foundational visual skills necessary for reading, and the 4D Summer Boot Camp is recommended for those who have already completed vision therapy.

The importance of maintaining visual skills to prevent decline and ensure children are ready for the next school year, is crucial...and that's why we're here for.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

(01:15) The tools we can provide.
(06:20) How the 4D Built to Read Program can help kids retain their reading progress.(12:01) Discovering the global Digital 4D Summer Boot Camp.

Episode 20 - What is Vision Therapy Like for an Adult

"There's going to be times when you come across something that just seems mentally or physically impossible. You can say 'this sucks' and take defeat, or take a step back and say, 'OK, I'm not so good at this, but I can do this." - Coach Ben on not letting your Visual Therapy exercises bring you down.

Today, Jess takes the host seat and talks to our very own Coach Ben. He's a board-certified Optometric Vision Therapist, working behind the scenes, providing feedback to the 4D Vision Therapy team on what activities could be performed to improve patients' results.
He also has a long history with filmmaking, storytelling, and editing, which he has been able to incorporate into his work and the way he sees therapy.
We're focusing on adults and how we approach their vision therapy, highlighting the importance of setting clear goals, even when things seem too easy or too difficult.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

(04:32) Setting vision therapy goals for adults. The Simpsons teach us a valuable lesson.

Episode 18 - Why Doesn't My Child Want to Play Sports?

"When as a parent you're going through these therapeutic experiences, you can learn a lot just about how your kid functions..we pride ourselves here at 4D, we try to explain to the parents what's happening so they learn to look at their world a little bit differently" - Jessica Liedke

Today we're talking about  the importance of equipping parents with the tools needed to ensure our children's success in sports, and how building muscle tone and developing essential visual skills for athletic pursuits is crucial.

We should understand that every child develops at their own pace, and some children may face physiological challenges in certain activities. In this episode we provide examples of children struggling with biking, soccer, or swimming due to coordination issues, depth perception difficulties, or trouble processing their surroundings and how to deal with them and find proper solutions.

Our advice to parents: stay attuned to your child's personality, interests, and provide ample opportunities for them to explore their passions. The role of vision in a child's development is vital. Contact us when your child faces activity-related struggles to make sure their visual system is working properly.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

(00:55) Does my kid really dislike sports or is it something else?
(03:16) When the fear of riding a bike gets too strong, look out for these signs.
(05:48) Making sure our kids have the right tools and skills before performing certain activities.
    (07:49) Giving soccer an opportunity.
(13:51) Is your kid struggling with swimming? It could be his visual system. Listen how we’ve dealt with this.
(16:45) A Lacrosse realization and how our program Built to Read helped.

Michael Lievens: his strabismus journey & translating Fixing my Gaze

Denise introduces Michael Lievens, whose website strabismusworld.com was one of the few blogs available when she started vision therapy. Following his journey and feeling less alone was so helpful as she began vision therapy! Michael shares how he developed accommodative strabismus at age three as a result of undetected far-sightedness, underwent three eye surgeries which left him with constant double vision and finally discovered vision therapy as a result of searching English language resources because no resources were available in his native language of Dutch. In 2017, Michael founded a Belgian strabismus nonprofit organization which undertook the project of translating Susan Barry’s book Fixing my Gaze into Dutch. He also has a Dutch website, scheelzien.org, a Dutch YouTube channel and FaceBook groups in Dutch and English. His association organizes annual patient meet ups where VTODs (vision therapy optometrists) are invited to speak.
Proceeds from the Dutch translation are being rolled forward into his latest project of translating Fixing my Gaze into the French language. He is also creating a French chapter of his organization, which will cater to the other side of Belgium, France and other French-speaking territories. He is passionate about sharing helpful information regarding strabismus solutions.

Episode 17 - How Do I Know if I have Binocular Vision Dysfunction?

Episode 17 - How Do I Know if I have Binocular Vision Dysfunction?

"Binocular vision dysfunction is very specific in that the quantitative findings, actually show that you're sometimes crossing your eyes, sometimes relaxing them out too much, and sometimes they are perfectly aligned. That's the hallmark quantitatively speaking of binocular vision dysfunction itself." - Dr. Juanita Collier

In today's episode, we discuss Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD), a condition where the eyes are slightly misaligned and struggle to send one clear image to the brain, causing symptoms such as dizziness, motion sickness, headache, and light sensitivity.
Treatment for Binocular Vision Dysfunction can include prism glasses, but it is important to consult an eye doctor experienced in diagnosing the condition to determine the appropriate treatment.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

(01:55) Optometrists.org definition of binocular vision dysfunction and its symptoms.
(04:39) Key factors that differentiate Binocular Vision Dysfunction from similar disorders.
(07:35) Prisms glasses and why they’re not always the best option for Binocular Vision Disorder. Vision therapy and prism lenses will help change how your brain perceives space, but not all changes for the better.
    (
11:43) How 4d vision gym can help you with Binocular Vision Disorder, both in person and digitally.
    (17:00) Our digital program explained.
