WA Parliament debates new child protection laws

WA Parliament debates new child protection laws

This week, the WA parliament is debating new child protection legislation.  Meanwhile a program called Aboriginal Family Led Decision Making is being piloted. Will new laws and programs reduce the vast over representation of Indigenous children in out-of-home care, currently seventeen times more likely than non-Indigenous children?

    Morning Bell 15 July

    Morning Bell 15 July

According to US Federal Reserve Chair, Jerome Powell, inflation “will likely remain elevated in coming months” before “moderating.”

Apple shares jumped 2.4% after reports that the company had ramped up production of its next-generation iPhones by 20%.

This morning, the futures are suggesting the Aussie share market will dip slightly, about 0.14% or 10 points.

    What to watch today:

    • Locally, on the COVID-19 front, NSW lockdowns were extended an additional two weeks until Friday the 30th of July. Western Australia impose an immediate border change with Victoria. This requires anyone arriving into WA from Victoria having to self-quarantine for 14 days and be tested on arrival. This comes as Victoria recorded a spike in local COVID-19 cases yesterday. With this in mind, continue to watch travel stocks, such as Flight Centre (ASX:FLT), Qantas (ASX:QAN), Sydney Airport (ASX:SYD) and Webjet (ASX:WEB), which will continue to come under pressure.
    • There are two new threats in the local Buy Now Pay Later market. Firstly, Apple has been working on a new service, dubbed internally as Apple Pay Later, that will allow its users to pay for any Apple Pay purchase in instalments over time. Secondly, PayPal have scrapped its late payment fees altogether, a fee that Afterpay managed to profit $70 million dollars’ worth in 2020. The news weighed down on the local tech sector, which fell 2.7%. Zip (ASX:Z1P) and Afterpay (ASX:APT) were hit the most, both down about 10%. Apple’s entry now casts doubt over Afterpay’s US push, which is believed to be one of its main growth initiatives. So continue to keep an eye on local BNPL stocks today.
    • In economic news, consumer confidence data was released yesterday, and the index gained 1.5%, holding up despite the sharp fall in NSW. This comes as both Victoria and WA recorded strong bounce backs from COVID-19 related disruptions in June.
    • Today, investors will get an update on the unemployment rate. Currently 5.1%, with expectations that this will fall to 5%.
    • The oil price traded lower after reports that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates had reached a compromise that should unlock an OPEC deal to boost global oil supplies.
    • The gold price rose about 1%.
    • The iron ore price fell about 0.15% from its record high level yesterday.

    Trading ideas:

    • Bell Potter has upgraded its recommendation on Nufarm (ASX:NUF) from a HOLD to a BUY with a price target of $5.30. The stock closed up 0.67% to $4.51, which implies about 17% share price growth.
    • Syrah Resources (ASX:SYR), Ecograf (ASX:EGR) and Orocobre (ASX:ORE) are all giving off bullish charting signals according to Trading Central.

CATCH UP – Move over Mark McGowan!

Opposition leader and young liberal Zak Kirkup rode his skateboard into the studio to catch up with Nathan, Nat & Shaun! What started as a punishment to Mark McGowan ended in a great new friendship as the guys learn what Zak is all about!

AFLW Player Sabrina Frederick captured the hearts of all Australians as she conquered the SAS Australia selection course after a gruelling two weeks! She called through to give NN&S a little behind the scenes look at how the show works and also gives the guys an update on her injuries. The course was tough enough, and it really didn’t help when some of the contestants jumped into the wrong car during a challenge so we hear your stories about the time you got into the wrong thing!

Andy Lee just loves every format of cricket and is even hosting a new version of the Front Bar dedicated to the great Aussie game! He also spills the beans on one of the greatest Big Bash stories of all time!

Ever thought you’d be asked to repay $600 just for buying someone chicken nuggets?! A babysitter has been asked to cough up the cash after feeding the kids chicken nuggets for dinner (who she LATER found out from the parents are vegetarian). How about a little heads up next time?  Let’s be honest… it usually is the baby sitters fault, so the guys thought it was about time we heard some stories about when the parents got it all wrong.

Shaun is proud to say that he could easily knock off a packet of crumpets (we’re right here with you Shaun) so we hear all about the food that you binge on the reg. This one takes a bizarre path… right down to the powdered milk zone.

Maintaining Balance, Strength & Mobility As We Age

Maintaining Balance, Strength & Mobility As We Age
The physical changes inherent to the effects of aging on the body can reduce autonomy and functional independence which may directly or indirectly lead to falls. Older adults have a high susceptibility to fall-related injuries and the root cause of many of these falls are reduced balance, muscle weakness and reduced mobility. In the United States this results in direct medical costs of 6 to 8 billion dollars per year. . More than 300,000 people are hospitalized each year from fall related injuries: broken hips, fractured shoulders or wrists which contribute to a reduced quality of life. Of those who are 70 years and older, approximately 32%-42% fall each year and many experience recurrent falls. Learn strategies you can use from an accomplished physical therapy professional who has dedicated her entire career to helping older adults in the home, community and long term care settings to improve their physical function in order to reduce and avoid falls.

CATCH UP – Race Day Regrets!

Nathan, Nat & Shaun reviewed the tapes from yesterday and can’t believe it… Jason Richardson predicted the winning trifecta combo and they didn’t put a bet on! Not only has it cost them a lot of money, but also a fair bit of dignity. Jason calls through to boast about the tip and even shares his thoughts on the potential winners of Oaks Day at Flemington. David Shortte rubbed salt in to the wound with a story about one lucky punter who won a stupidly large amount of money from a $1 bet. Don’t blow it this time guys!

What’s the coldest you’ve ever been? Well unless it’s hypothermia, then you haven’t been as cold as Shannon Ponton during one of the challenges on SAS Australia. Shannon shares his experiences from the show and we hear from callers who’ve been through a frosty situation of their own.

Some of us were just born to perform… especially Dave who knocked himself out cold at a mates wedding. Nathan, Nat & Shaun hear stories from people who have made questionable decisions when the camera comes out, including a tale from a teacher who made it into the paper for all the wrong reasons!

Hold your horses!! Tab Touch Radio’s David Shorte, Jason Richardson, and champion WA jockey Willie Pike called in for a bit of horse chat. Even though we had three horse racing experts on the show today let’s be honest… it probably didn’t put Shaun any closer to picking a winner.

FIELD TRIP: Hunger! At Starvation Heights

Time for a very spooky FIELD TRIP! This week we drive up to the misty, haunted little town of Olalla, WA, to explore for ourselves the final resting place of the victims of Linda Hazzard, one of America's cruelest serial killers. Have you encountered the restless spirits of Linda Hazzard's victims? Do you have a suggestion for our next Field Trip?Send us your otherworldly encounters, weird dreams, spooky stories, drive suggestions, and pet conspiracy theories (or literally whatever you want!) to dumbandrestlesspodcast@gmail.com, or DM us on Instagram at @dumbandrestlesspodcast or Twitter at @dumbrestlesspod!
