    Work, wages, and fairness

    Work, wages, and fairness

Unemployment may be low, but it is no bed of roses for Australian workers. Real wages are falling, inflation remains high, and interest rates keep going up. For many, it is a struggle to put food on the table and find secure housing. Yet Australia is brimming with money – it is one of the wealthiest countries on earth. Why aren't more of us sharing in the spoils?

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
So I just got hired at this really small literal mom and pop cafe in the town I just moved to. When I was hired, the one owner told me I would get “$14 an hour plus cash tips.” Maybe I’m just fuckin stupid, but I didn’t realize that that meant literally only the cash tips and I would not get paid any of the tips that people leave when they pay with a credit card. I asked her about credit card tips today and that’s when she told me, very coldly, “Like I told you yesterday and the day you were hired, you get cash tips. We keep credit card tips.”

Most of our payments are done with cards so I am missing out on a LOT of tips. I have never worked somewhere that I did not receive tip outs from credit card tips. Is this even allowed?

High Court curbs minister's citizenship powers, and landmark ruling on unpaid wages

High Court curbs minister's citizenship powers, and landmark ruling on unpaid wages

The High Court has ruled that a decision by the former Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews to rescind the citizenship of an Australian man suspected of joining the Islamic State group was unconstitutional. And, for the first time, unpaid workers can pursue the director of a collapsed company in the small claims tribunal of the Federal Circuit and Family Court.

    Fight for $15 in a Right-to-Work State

    Fight for $15 in a Right-to-Work State

"Ya know Arizona is a right-to-work state. Don't'cha? The right to work for less," my Dad warned me, 40 years ago when I moved to Tucson in the fall of 1981.

Back in 1981, I knew what right to work meant, but I didn't realize how anti-union, right-to-work laws suppress wages for everyone. I also had no idea how moving from a highly unionized state to a right-to-work state would impact my career, my future wages and my children's opportunities to make a living wage.

Thank goodness that voters in low-wage states like Arizona can take matters into their own hands through Citizens Initiative when the state Legislature fails to act OR when the Legislature passes laws that outwardly attack workers and local jurisdictions that attempt reforms.

In this Episode of A View from the Left Side, you will learn about efforts in Tucson and Flagstaff to raise the local minimum wage to $15 per hour and efforts by Republican Legislators to stop local voters from improving the local economy by raising the wage..

My guest is C.J. Boyd who is campaign manager for Tucson Fight for $15, which is on the Nov. 2, 2021 ballot. If you are on the Permanent Early Voting List (PVEL), you should have received your ballot in the mail.

In this episode, Boyd explains the Tucson citizen's initiative to raise the wage to $15 by 2025 and the worker protections that are also included in this ballot proposition.

House Democrats wrap arguments today in Trump’s impeachment trial, many Republicans saying they don’t see the direct connection between the former president and the rampage; CDC issues new guidelines urging double masking against the highly contagious variants; Asian-Americans facing violence and discrimination during the pandemic; and Los Angeles sets up a wage-theft task force to protect undocumented workers.
