Episode 229 The LEADERSHIP of GEORGE BUSH ( Part 5) A most Important Evening - (Part B - Day 3 of the 1980 Republican National Convention )

Episode 229 The LEADERSHIP of GEORGE BUSH ( Part 5) A most Important Evening - (Part B - Day 3 of the 1980 Republican National Convention )

The third day of the Republican National Convention of 1980 was arguably the most exciting political day I can ever remember in my over 40 years of involvement in political life. It was also arguably the most historic.  As a nine year old child, I was absolutely glued to the broadcast of the convention as it all unfolded on national television. Ronald Reagan and former President Gerald Ford were locked in intense negotiation behind the scenes as to how to get a Reagan - Ford ticket.

All the political heavyweights of the era were weighing in on the chances that Ford would indeed get the deal he wanted to be a Co-President and help Ronald Reagan win the Presidency. This, of course, left George H. W. Bush out in the cold. It really looked like his political future was about to be snuffed out after what had been a remarkable primary run. All into the evening, in primetime, rumors circulated that the Governor and the former President would soon be coming to the hall. Then suddenly CBS News had Gerald Ford on the air talking about the deal he was ironing out with the Reagan campaign. He would demand to have unprecedented powers in the Vice Presidency, that Ronald Reagan would have to share the title he was on the verge of winning. All while a dejected George and Barbara Bush watched on television and drinking a few drinks to dull the sense of emotional let down.

However, Ronald Reagan was watching the broadcast too and he wanted none of a co-presidency. Suddenly, out of the clear blue sky the phone rang in the Bush suite, answered by James A. Baker , it was Governor Ronald Reagan on the line for Ambassador George Bush and by the end of that phone call it would be Bush on the ticket with Reagan, The first of six out of seven national Republican tickets that would feature one of the members of the Bush family on it.

Making this night not only one of the most exciting but also one of the most important evenings of the 20th century, all broadcast live on television. As reporter Susan Page has said "It looked like the end but it was , in fact, the beginning" in a long dynastic run by the Bush Family.

Episode 199 JOHN JENRETTE OUR CONGRESSMAN and JIMMY CARTER too (Part 9) The Inaugural Address of President James Earl Carter and the Walk down Pennsylvania Avenue (Special Edition)

Episode 199 JOHN JENRETTE OUR CONGRESSMAN and JIMMY CARTER too (Part 9) The Inaugural Address of President James Earl Carter and the Walk down Pennsylvania Avenue (Special Edition)

It was a new era in Washington D.C. and the United States of America. Finally, the great gash in modern American history, The Vietnam War and the Watergate Crisis, was in the rearview mirror.  It was all symbolized by a new American President from Georgia, who had risen out of seemingly nowhere to be elected President.  He represented a refreshing change, with a big toothy smile, and Baptist Minister like promise that he would never lie to the American People,  a peanut farmer ushered in an outsider tenure, and rested away the reigns of power from the Washington insiders many saw as having nearly driven the country off a cliff.

Now Jimmy Carter would address the nation and do something we had not seen since the days of Thomas Jefferson in the Presidency. He got out of the limousine and walked the full length of Pennsylvania Avenue. It was as shocking in the moment as it was refreshing for the American People to see for themselves a new President, a President who was one of us.

In this episode we let you relive the Inauguration of Jimmy Carter, his full address, and a good chunk of his walk down Pennsylvania  Avenue as though you were right there watching it as it happened.

The Country RICHARD NIXON Inherited a Preview

The Country RICHARD NIXON Inherited a Preview

The rest of Season 1 of   "The Richard Nixon Experience " takes us through the most controversial period in our history other than the Civil War.

In this season we will cover one of the most controversial an arguably most consequential elections in the entire history of our nation.  We will see the country inherited by Richard Nixon after The Administrations of John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson.

Here is a preview of what promises to be a long, hot, summer....

In the Beginning - Richard Nixon's Remarkable Run (Part 2) The Vice Presidency to 1968

In the Beginning - Richard Nixon's Remarkable Run (Part 2) The Vice Presidency to 1968

This episode starts as Richard Nixon, at age 39, is taking the oath of the Vice President of the United States.

On this episode we take you through his remarkable Vice Presidency, where he has to step in through two major illnesses of the President, a heart attack and then stroke. Then he is attacked by a violent, rock throwing mob as he travels by motorcade through the streets of Caracas , Venezuela, then has to hold his own at a trade show in Moscow when he is cornered for an impromptu debate with Soviet Union Premier Nikita Khrushchev.

Then we move into the most examined Presidential campaign in history as Vice President Richard Nixon faces off against an old friend from Congress, Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts. It would be one of the closest races in history and Nixon would lose. Then to get back in the political hunt Richard Nixon goes home to California and attempts to run for Governor in 1962, only to lose a second time. It looked like his career had flamed out as meteorically as it had taken off to start with.

Then a series of events would open more and more doors for a return to the national stage and a run for President in 1968.

In the Beginning - Richard Nixon's Remarkable Run (Part 1)

In the Beginning - Richard Nixon's Remarkable Run (Part 1)

The opening episode of Season 1 of  "The Richard Nixon Experience"   is a particular thing of excitement for me. Richard Nixon is one of my political heroes and most responsible for my interest in public service. I have been a fan since I discovered a scrapbook saved by my Mother from a class she was student teaching in 1960. A full decade before I was born.

I have long felt that no full length , in-depth, look at the life of Richard Nixon has ever been done that did not attempt to paint the life, career, an administration of Richard Nixon in a negative light. That has, thankfully,  in recent years begun to change, with great books written by Conrad Black, Jonathan Atken, Evan Thomas, J.A. Farrell, and most recently several books by Historian Luke Nichter, especially  his book "Richard Nixon and Europe: The Reshaping of the Post War Atlantic World"

This Podcast Documentary, that begins with this episode, will I hope contribute to showing the remarkable life of Richard Nixon with the appreciation he deserves. This Podcast series will span four seasons worth of shows. This first season will cover his career through the end of the Vietnam War in January of 1973. We will then comeback in Season five to look at Watergate and the other events of his final year and 8 months in office, and then an epilogue of events that shows what happened after he left, to both the country, and to him.

I cannot say thank you enough to several sources of information that have made this podcast documentary possible.  They are:  the national archives for several oral histories, the television networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, & CNN)  for historic coverage and , most especially, the Richard Nixon Foundation and the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Birthplace, that have created many of the short features I used, and events where people talked about their time with, or their studies of,  President and Mrs. Nixon.

I would also like to say a special thank you to Historian Luke Nichter for his work with chronicling and making accessible the Nixon tapes through the site NixonTapes.org. We use them extensively, especially as we drew closer to the end of the Vietnam War. This I hope will be an opportunity to hear President Nixon guide us through the end game, out of Vietnam. Most people have never heard these tapes and I hope you will tune in to those episodes most especially.

This show begins at the end, on the night that former President Richard Nixon  passed away. We will look as the the world stopped to take a pause and reflect on his amazing life. Much to the chattering class and media elites amazement, Richard Nixon's passing led to an outpouring of grief from the heartland of America, the common people, the folks Richard Nixon had always represented and in whose interests he served. We then will take you through a two part tour of his amazing career from running for Congress, to the Senate, the Vice Presidency , his 1960 and 1962 losses, and then back to the 1968 election he won in our last documentary. ( see the shows  we just completed in Season 3 on Lyndon Johnson and 1968)

Then we will move on to Richard Nixon's Presidency and what many have called "The Age of Nixon"

    Joe Zengerle

    Joe Zengerle
December of 1967 was a pivotal time to arrive in Vietnam. A month later, the Tet Offensive would alter the course of the war, public sentiment about its prosecution, and the direction of a presidency. From his unique vantage point as General William Westmoreland’s special assistant, Joe Zengerle saw the world transform itself in the first half of 1968.

BIGGEST SCHLAPP SCANDAL SINCE WILL SMITH OBSCURES SPEAKER RACE 1.6.23

EPISODE 107: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN

A-Block (1:43) Kevin "Oceans 11" McCarthy is overshadowed by The Daily Beast report that CPAC lynchpin and MAGA Caucus inspiration Matt Schapp has been accused of "sustained and unwanted and unsolicited" sexual groping by a man working for Herschel Walker's Senate campaign. The Schlapp story overshadowed what should've been the real headline: Congressman Don Bacon floated, on Fox News no less, a plan to offer the Democrats improved committee ratios and other procedural (but not insignificant) goodies in exchange for support for McCarthy because the GOP is going to have to be bipartisan to get anything done and it might as well start now. (6:00) But at least half a dozen other Republicans stepped on rakes. One of them led to the House breaking out in chants of "Ha-keem Ha-keem" and another is as remarkable a diatribe as I've ever heard in politics. (9:30) I don't put much stock in Ali Alexander, but he accused Marjorie Taylor Greene of an unspecified crime in Georgia and went deeply misogynistic to insult her. Get your popcorn.

B-Block (14:20) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Zsa Zsa in Georgia (15:40) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: The January 6 Presidential Citizen Medals vie for news space with a wrongful death suit against Trump, a sexual harassment suit against Rudy, and Prince Harry's Frozen Junk (19:00) IN SPORTS: You can use the word miracle: Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin is moving his limbs and asking for scoreboard updates, and Alex Rodriguez may have gotten caught shoveling about shoveling (21:07) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Conservatives blast Hannity, Bothsidesism in the House, and Joe Rogan is the dumbest guy on the planet. Again. Still. Forever.

C-Block (26:47) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Sunday would've been Elvis Presley's birthday so it's time to play it again: not only did I - at age 18 - actually do a radio commercial for an Elvis Presley Concert that he never lived to see, but the tape of it still exists!

Episode 165 RICHARD NIXON and WATERGATE 1974 The Fall (Part 15) The Resignation of a President

Episode 165 RICHARD NIXON and WATERGATE 1974 The Fall (Part 15) The Resignation of a President

In this episode we simply relive this unfathomable moment in history.  Not only the resignation of an elected President of the United States, but the resignation of arguably one of the greatest in the history of the country.

In this episode we tune in to the live coverage of the time from the three networks then in existence, CBS News, ABC News, and NBC News. They will interview many of the common everyday Americans so shell shocked by the events of the past year, some of  the political figures of the era, and let some of their own talking heads analyze the historic moment.

Then at 9pm on  August 8, 1974, Richard Nixon addresses the nation.  You will witness it all here, on "Nixon and Watergate" ,  just like you were flipping through the dial as it was occuring that fateful day.

A day  when we overthrew the President that had gotten us out of Vietnam, saved the nation of Israel, sensibly protected the environment, desegregated the southern school system, opened up China, thawed the Cold War with the Soviet Union and brought peace and stability to a very troubled and divided world.

THEY CALLED FOR ATTACKS ON LGTBQ, NOW DENY IT 11.22.22

THEY CALLED FOR ATTACKS ON LGTBQ, NOW DENY IT 11.22.22

EPISODE 81: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN

A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Tucker Carlson, who has spent months conflating LGBTQ issues with "sex crimes" and "castrating children" and two months ago demanded his viewers not "put up with this, for one second, no matter what the law says," last night insisted stochastic terrorism is impossible and no one could be indoctrinated by his or others' words while repeating that gay and trans people and doctors and teachers were indoctrinating children and then throwing to a commercial for Golden Corral because OF COURSE things said on television can't influence you to do ANYTHING. (8:49) And the right wing continues its attempt to get others to act violently: GOP presidential wannabe Mike Pompeo insists "The most dangerous person in the world is (American Federation of Teachers leader) Randi Weingarten" because of "the filth they're teaching our kids."

B-Block (15:23) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Cottage and Sheff (16:36) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Comer Scandal-latest. Bob Iger returns; I will repeat the best advice I've ever gotten in my life, which Iger gave me in March 1979! (20:16) IN SPORTS: US "loses" World Cup opener 1-1; Iran's brave players win the day while the cowardly captains of Belgium, Denmark, England, Germany, The Netherlands, and Wales lose it. The new baseball Hall of Fame ballot is out and once again the top new candidate will be excluded because of a cheating scandal (24:03) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: 32 paragraphs of Trump Special Counsel/GOP BS Biden Investigations bothsidesism from CNN, competing with Cesar "Crisis of Confidence" Conde of NBC News and ex-Press Secretary Kayleigh "I Dunno How To Say This Name" McEnany for the dishonors.

C-Block (28:53) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL. It is 59 years since the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and I may be the youngest person you know with a distinct memory of that terrible day and the days that followed. From the adults crying to the cancellation of all the cartoons to the muted Thanksgiving Day Parade, it made its impression on me, two months shy of my fifth birthday.

EPISODE 42: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN 9.28.22

    OATH KEEPERS COULD SCREW TRUMP

A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Keep your eye on the trial of Stewart Rhodes and the Oath Keepers as jury selection continues today. Rhodes' defense is: he and his terrorists were acting on what were to be legal orders from Trump as President. So...they just guessed that would be the case? They assumed? THEY HAD TO HAVE BEEN TOLD. Told? By whom? What will they say in their own defense and who will testify to what communications or meetings or conspiracies? They are on trial for Seditious Conspiracy and perhaps decades in jail and who they blame could be close to Trump - or Trump himself. (5:07) Other Oath Keepers have already flipped and implicated Roger Stone, Stop The Steal, and The Proud Boys (7:05) And ex-Trump physician, Congressman Ronny Jackson, who supposedly reached out to Stewart Rhodes for protection during the attempted coup.

B-Block (15:16) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Jinxie in Brooklyn (16:39) IN SPORTS: Sure they clinched their division, but what about Aaron Judge's home run drought? And now that the NFL has cancelled its All-Star Game will the other leagues follow suit? (20:32) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The book banners of Bucks County PA taking it an extra yard, the University of Idaho, and the DeSantis appointee who just quit after a KKK photo surfaced, compete for honors (24:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: In the world of the movie "Network" it was 47 years ago this week that things began to go off the rails for Howard Beale, Max Schumacher, Diana Christensen, and the UBS Evening News. For my money, it's the greatest movie of all time - and especially the most prophetic.

C-Block (37:03) More on "Network" and the 23 separate prophecies of auteur Paddy Chayefsky, who saw in 1976 what the rest of us could not imagine: what television news would look like in 2022.

Here are a few memories from WJDM-Radio in Elizabeth, NJ, which wasn't all that different from the craziness at WKRP in Cincinnati. In this podcast series, Tom Nielson tells stories, shares memories, and concocts whimsical, humorous tales inspired by his life adventures, channeling the style of Jean Shepherd of WOR-Radio and other radio storytellers.

Episode 95: RICHARD NIXON 1972 The Foundation of Peace (Part 25 ) Endgame 4 The Horrors of War, & Tragedy for Joe Biden & the passing of President Harry Truman too

The Horrors of War cannot be overstated. Here in the final stages of the Vietnam War for America things gets brutal for the people of North Vietnam. In this episode we start with the tragedies that seem to always happen no matter how hard the military tries in war. Civilians die. Here we listen to the Vietnamese people talk about the horrific tragedy of a building bombed by accident, and the wiping out of an entire family.  It is all coming from news clips saved for a documentary on the War titled "Vietnam a Television History", episode 10.

Then we move on to sad week here in America for the family of a new 29 year old Senator recently elected from Delaware. Senator- Elect  Joe Biden was on Capital Hill, setting up his new office, and meeting with his soon to be new collogues in the United States Senate, when he received a call no husband and father ever wants to receive.  His wife and three children were in a horrific car accident while Christmas shopping. His wife Neilia and his 18 month old daughter, Naomi,  were killed at the scene and his two sons, Hunter and Beau,  were rushed to the hospital. It would change everything for Joe Biden.

Here we will listen in as President Nixon is informed of the tragedy and the President's call to the new Senator - elect to give him heartfelt condolences. A touching moment from the much more senior Nixon to a very young man who has just lost everything.

Then America will learn of the passing of political giant. The blunt speaking, take no prisoners, tell it like it was, give them hell, Harry S. Truman,  33rd President of the United States has died peacefully in his sleep at a hospital in Missouri. Truman was 88 years old. It was the end of an era as Truman was the last of the World War 2 era leaders who had saved the world from tyranny.

And now Richard Nixon would be working to finish his work to stop tyranny in its tracks in South East Asia. It seems his bombing of the north may have finally forced them to the table for a real and lasting peace.
