    Quotes of the  episode

The amount of artillery being used (in Ukraine) is what I haven’t seen before.

We are from this part of the world where conflicts — part of our life, and we can’t get away from it whether we like it or not.

If you writing on event 6 days after daily journalists — you should bring something new to a story. That takes time.

I fundamentally believe in  truth. The truth is not what we want it to be. Truth doesn’t fit in our world view.  I don’t believe in notion of post-truth — that everything is just a perspective. This what I've heard of a lot when I lived in Moscow. It's not a matter of opinion - it's fact that someone killed those people. The job of the journalist — to find out what  have happened.

After Nord-Ost I told younger journalist, who've been with me: "What you’ve seen is completely uncorrupted and untainted by what the Russian government is gonna say, by what police is gonna say — you know what you’ve seen is true. Don’t mix it up with quotes of other people that may not be the truth".

Real life – is not about what Zelenskiy says or Putin says. It's about how it affects real people. The closer you go to frontline — the more real everything become, the more you feel the effects of what happening. And I feel strangely more comfortable in this situation.

    215 - Nellie Bly

Take a listen and learn about Nellie Bly, or Elizabeth Cochran.  She was a pioneer in the filed of investigative journalism, famous for going undercover as a patient to expose the horrible conditions in mental institutions and for traveling around the world in less than 80 days to break the record of the fictional Phileas Fogg.  Her various turns in life lead her to running a steel company and being a war correspondent on the eastern front of WWI in addition to her more well know stint as world traveller.

Award-Winning War Correspondent Janine di Giovanni on Tragedy, Justice and Healing

Award-Winning War Correspondent Janine di Giovanni on Tragedy, Justice and Healing

From defending her brother from the bullies as a child, to reporting in the darkest and most dangerous corners of the Earth, Janine di Giovanni has always had a fierce need to fight for justice and stand up for others whose voices cannot be heard.

Janine di Giovanni is a multi-award winning war reporter and author who has covered nearly every major violent conflict since the late nineteen-eighties. Her focus is on war crimes; global terrorism; refugee issues and sexual violence during war time. She is currently a Senior Fellow and Professor at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs.

In this episode of Stories of Transformation, we get the chance to learn what it’s like to be an undercover reporter whose job involves witnessing the most gruesome acts of violence, and what insights and wisdom she has taken from these experiences.

We learn about the one photograph that changed the trajectory of Janine’s life and put her on this journalistic path, how the things she’s seen and experienced have shaped how she views the world today, and about her love affair with another war reporter.

Lastly, Janine provides a beautiful conclusion on how the US can heal from centuries of systemic racism, based on her research of countries that have made comebacks from brutal wars.
