Latin American music owes a large part of its diffusion, promotion and continuous celebration within London to Callum Simpson. Mostly known as Dj Cal Jader, he has been the driving force behind the emotions and very existence of Movimientos – a project created with two clear and distinctive intentions: To offer spaces for fun, dancing and joyful recreation and to create political resistance out of the cultural reaffirmation of diversity and differences.

Emma Goldman, the well known anarchist and writer, once said ‘If I can’t dance to it, it is not my revolution’ and it is almost as if this has served as the inspiration for Movimientos’ creation of its solid artistic agenda, in which the right to be different is a fundamental part of its fight against the homogenisation of predominant cultures. Movimientos, in addition to being the most active and productive non-profit organisation dedicated to the creation of Latin American music events in the United Kingdom, is also the most interesting because it combines club culture with the promotion of the live music. Movimientos has, for years, offered support to emerging Latin American talent seeking exposure within London, while offering the more established names the opportunity to connect with British audiences by performing in the English capital.

Listen to this entertaining conversation in order to discover how a political student from the north of England and with Scottish roots ended up in love with Latin American music after taking an interest in South America’s political movements of the 20th century. Also discover what it has been like to co-produce Love Carnival, probably the best known and most fiery tropical party in the city, playing the musical fusions so loved by Cal. And finally, discover what it feels like to be a leading light of the scene he has embraced with his brotherly and multi-rhythmic beat, giving the Latin American diaspora his loyal support as well as his absolute commitment.

Eliane es una super estrella de la escena musical de la ciudad de Londres. Llegó a esta gran capital para estudiar etnomusicología y se quedó porque a veces el amor y el odio se dan la mano, y porque lo que amas y lo que te ama terminan siendo dos caras muy simbióticas de una misma moneda. Activa, asertiva, deshinibida, vital y visceral, con su música Eliane amalgama y expresa todas estas cualidades y las expande a su enésima potencia. Sin miedo a señalar los defectos del sistema y sin dudar a la hora de tomar partido para mejorar lo establecido como norma sine qua non, desde muy joven asumió la dirección musical de proyectos ambiciosos y valientes como WARA, En El Aire, y Ely y La Evolución. Proyectos que llevan de distintos modos su estampa personal y que han generado mayor interés por el latido musical latino en este lado del mundo, contribuyendo con su difusión.

Aunque nació y creció en Luxemburgo, en el seno de una familia en la que su madre – Caridad Correa – salía a trabajar y su padre – el mítico fotógrafo argentino Carlos Bosch – jugaba con ella en casa creando toda clase de terrorismos artísticos, pocas veces tendrás la oportunidad de conocer a una mujer mas cubana y mas representativa del caribe hispano que Eliane. Dicho esto, no esperes sin embargo, un encuentro cliché con un tipo de sabrosura tropical de libreto. En esta entrevista vas a enamorarte de una mujer llena de ímpetu, de talento, de determinación y de vocación transformadora, pero también única en su rebeldía y reacia a encajar en ningún formato de clasificación estereotipado. Siendo producto de una familia de humanistas combativos y progresistas, Eliane tiene sin duda posturas políticas que la convierten en la voz de una generación anti-paternalista y anti-imperialista, pero sobre todo anti-conformista.

Carla y Eliane en esta conversación fluyeron como impetuosas olas del Mar Caribe. Sin miedo a abrir espacios para la polémica, hablaron de la Havana, de Buenos Aires, de Luxemburgo y de Londres. Hablaron de la música, de las luchas de género, de como vivir la experiencia multicultural con sensibilidad ética y del futuro de la música en tiempos de interacción artística online y de socialización virtual. Ambas dibujaron juntas el mapa de un mundo lleno de postales a color, memorias de infancia, sueños a futuro y cálida esperanza humana.

Este episodio es una oda a la acción, y a las infinitas posibilidades de aprendizaje y crecimiento que se alcanzan al perseguir lo que amas de un modo deliberado y consiente. 

Lya Reis Guerrero, mejor conocida en las esferas musicales como Lya Drummer, es una una mujer de fuego, una mujer que parece tener escrito en la frente las palabra ‘Vamos, si se puede’. Lya es lo que llaman en ingles ‘a power house’: una guerrera poderosa, con una fuerza vital que le permite moverse con acertividad, y explorar toda la potencialidad presente en las cosas que ama. Baterista, percusionista, diseñadora de sonido, surfista y skater, Lya se entrega a la vida con un entusiasmo contagioso, sin embargo, con esta entrevista descubrimos el lado mas estructurado y organizado de su fogoza personalidad.

Dividirse entre decenas de proyectos musicales da muestra de su gran versatilidad como instrumentista, pero también describe su fe en la música como medio y como mensaje. Aunque sus inicios como baterista están asociados a la crudeza expresiva del grunge y el punk -Lya se inició en Caracas como baterista de Skin, una banda rock solo de chicas – en la actualidad disemina por el mundo, la potencialidad rítmica de los beats latinos que se atreven a desafiar tradiciones y estereotipos con fusiones de ineludible relevancia artística. 

Desde su llegada a Europa ha vivido toda clase de aventuras y desafíos, tanto en el terreno personal como en el musical, razón por la cual esta conversación está llena de anécdotas divertidas, historias de reinvención y tips de supervivencia.
