Ep. 556 – "One of the Worst Hunting Seasons in Memory”—The 2023–24 Season in Review

Well, here it is— a look back on what has been referred to as “one of the worst hunting seasons in memory.” Co-hosts Chris Jennings and Dr. Mike Brasher are joined by Jim Ronquest, Vice President of Development for Drake Waterfowl, to discuss the season from start to finish, north to south, and east to west. Numerous factors conspired to make the 2023-24 season a challenging one for even the most seasoned hunters, including low breeding populations, El Nino, widespread drought, limited snowfall, record low ice cover, and temperature swings from record warmth to record cold. As one season ends another begins, and the group looks ahead to dry conditions on the prairies and what is needed to turn things around.

Missouri River Basin Water Management - Call - 02/08/2024
January runoff in the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City was 0.4 million acre-feet, 56% of average. Runoff was well-below-average due to much-below-normal temperatures over the whole Missouri River Basin and below-normal precipitation over most of the upper basin. The 2024 calendar year runoff forecast above Sioux City is 18.8 MAF, 73% of average. The runoff forecast is based on current soil moisture conditions, plains snowpack, mountain snowpack, and long-term precipitation and temperature outlooks.

INFRA STORIES 7. Fighting against flooding in Denmark

INFRA STORIES 7. Fighting against flooding in Denmark

    Welcome to Infra Stories.

Stories about places all across Nordics, where infrastructure projects with significant impact for the local communities have been built. Stories about innovative and sustainable solutions.

Fighting against flooding in Roskilde, Denmark

The city of Roskilde in Denmark is probably most famous for its annual music festival. 130,000 visitors enjoying eight days of live music until it inevitably rains, the festival floods and leaves everyone swimming in 80 hectares of mud.

Unfortunately, the coastal areas surrounding the fjord just to the north of Roskilde, are suffering from a much more serious type of flooding. Residents in Jyllinge Nordmark  are painfully aware of this: far too many of them have been left standing in water up to their waist when the fjord and local streams flood their homes. Sadly, this has happened several times over the past decade, resulting in flooded basements and costly damage. Basically, the future will see an increasing demand for reliable stormwater solutions.

One of these coastal protection initiatives was a large new pumping plant supplied by Sulzer, a specialist in fluid engineering and pumping technologies for fluids. The plant was designed to send excess water from the River Værebro back into the fjord when the river breaks its banks.

Kenneth Larsen, Technical Manager at Sulzer described the situation. “A system of this kind must not go wrong. When we put our solution out to tender, we specified that the structure had to be made of polyethylene plastic to withstand chemical influence from the very salty water passing through the system. The plant pumps were installed in a custom-made Wehopanel structure of polyethylene plastic delivered by Uponor Infra, which could withstand the water and has a design life of over 100 years.

The highly durable Wehopanels developed by Uponor Infra can be dimensioned and equipped individually for countless applications, such as tanks, support structures, pumping station buildings and floating or submerged marine structures. In recent years, many innovative new products and structures have been developed using Wehopanel.

    Welcome to Infra Stories.

Stories about places all across Nordics, where infrastructure projects with significant impact for the local communities have been built. Stories about innovative and sustainable solutions.

A new lease of life for an iconic railway station - Warsaw West railway station.

The modernisation of the Warsaw West railway station is the largest construction project currently underway in the Polish capital. Once completed, it will become Poland’s largest station, with 120,000 passengers expected to pass through daily by 2030. To  always ensure uninterrupted rail traffic, it is necessary to ensure adequate drainage of the railway line and other track assets. Five batteries of PE-HD retention tanks meet the strictest criteria of durability under heavy loads from rail traffic.

    Welcome to Infra Stories.

Stories about places all across Nordics, where infrastructure projects with significant impact for the local communities have been built. Stories about innovative and sustainable solutions.

We often take water for granted. It seems like a basic human right. But does this rather overlook the effort and cost that goes into providing clean water for a whole country?

We spoke with Jyrki Laitinen to talk about the current situation regarding water supply and water quality in Finland. Jyrki is Head of the Unit of Sustainable Water Services at the Finnish Environment Institute.  And what he had to say was rather concerning.

Finland is a country that prides itself on clean drinking water. A country where you can drink from the taps, the streams and even lakes without too much cause for concern. However, a combination of factors could soon cause an increase in problems in Finland that would not only affect the availability of clean potable water, but also potentially cause sickness, and droughts.

Missouri River Basin Water Management - Call - 9/07/2023
Rainfall in the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa, was above normal for August, resulting in above average runoff. However, due previous years' drier-than-normal conditions leaves the total storage in the Missouri River mainstem reservoir system below normal. Based on the Sept. 1 system storage, Gavins Point Dam winter releases will be 13,000 cfs, per the Master Manual criteria. This call focuses on winter release rates and storage at Fort Peck meeting the criteria for a planned Test Flow.

#6: Living within just boundaries (and not just safe boundaries), with Joyeeta Gupta

Who is responsible for the climate crisis? And how safe is it actually for everyone when we keep within established planetary boundaries?

Wouter Mulders and Neha Mungekar are very honoured to get to wrap up this season by discussing such questions with Joyeeta Gupta. She is a professor of Environment and Development in the Global South at the University of Amsterdam and a 2023 winner of the Spinoza Prize, which is like the Dutch Nobel Prize for science.

We talk about the novels of Perry Mason being an early inspiration, about how she managed to make climate law interesting for a diverse group of students and about the relation between gender, wealth distribution and climate action.

And Joyeeta wonders: how do we get to a storyline of more global equality? And why is it normal for engineers and pharmaceutical scientists to set standards and make recommendations, but not for climate scholars?
