THEY CALLED FOR ATTACKS ON LGTBQ, NOW DENY IT 11.22.22

EPISODE 81: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN

A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Tucker Carlson, who has spent months conflating LGBTQ issues with "sex crimes" and "castrating children" and two months ago demanded his viewers not "put up with this, for one second, no matter what the law says," last night insisted stochastic terrorism is impossible and no one could be indoctrinated by his or others' words while repeating that gay and trans people and doctors and teachers were indoctrinating children and then throwing to a commercial for Golden Corral because OF COURSE things said on television can't influence you to do ANYTHING. (8:49) And the right wing continues its attempt to get others to act violently: GOP presidential wannabe Mike Pompeo insists "The most dangerous person in the world is (American Federation of Teachers leader) Randi Weingarten" because of "the filth they're teaching our kids."

B-Block (15:23) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Cottage and Sheff (16:36) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Comer Scandal-latest. Bob Iger returns; I will repeat the best advice I've ever gotten in my life, which Iger gave me in March 1979! (20:16) IN SPORTS: US "loses" World Cup opener 1-1; Iran's brave players win the day while the cowardly captains of Belgium, Denmark, England, Germany, The Netherlands, and Wales lose it. The new baseball Hall of Fame ballot is out and once again the top new candidate will be excluded because of a cheating scandal (24:03) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: 32 paragraphs of Trump Special Counsel/GOP BS Biden Investigations bothsidesism from CNN, competing with Cesar "Crisis of Confidence" Conde of NBC News and ex-Press Secretary Kayleigh "I Dunno How To Say This Name" McEnany for the dishonors.

C-Block (28:53) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL. It is 59 years since the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and I may be the youngest person you know with a distinct memory of that terrible day and the days that followed. From the adults crying to the cancellation of all the cartoons to the muted Thanksgiving Day Parade, it made its impression on me, two months shy of my fifth birthday.

Insights Into Entertainment: Episode 70 "A Splash of Soccer"

Insights Into Entertainment: Episode 70 "A Splash of Soccer"

Disneyland Resort releases details of it's reopening plan starting on July 17th, the parks 65th anniversary. Disney saves another sport, this time Major League Soccer will be housing it's next active tournament at ESPN's Wide World of Sports. And Disney faces backlash over Splash Mountain and it's "Song of the South" based theme.

In Entertainment News we take a look at the trademark battle brewing between the United States Space Force and Netflix's Space Force for international merchandising. Then we'll close out the show with two great Insightful Picks of the Week. Michelle will talk about the Amazon Prime documentary "Bettie Page Reveals All'. Joe highlights the Netflix documentary "History 101".

Insights Into Entertainment: Episode 69 "The Happiest Place in the NBA"

Insights Into Entertainment: Episode 69 "The Happiest Place in the NBA"

It's official, Disney saves the NBA season. Or at least some form of an NBA season that will be played out at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Florida. We also have an update on when Disneyland in California will reopen and the rules surrounding that reopening. And finally in Disney Detective we take a look at an update on our much anticipated Marvel shows WandaVision and Falcon and Winter Soldier.

Star Wars Insights take a walk down memory lane with a peak at how the original triology could have looked much different had different casting calls been made. Can you picture Al Pacino at Han Solo? Or William Katt as Luke Skywalker. It would certainly have been a very different movie. Then Jon Favreau gives us an update on Season 2 of the Mandalorian to get us through these dark times.

In Entertainment News we'll take a look at Don Henley and his appeal to Congrats to change copyright law. As innocent as this may seem there could be far reaching consequences affecting every aspect of the internet, especially independent podcasters like us. We'll watch the development of this story with great interest.

We'll finish up with a couple of great Insightful Picks of the Week as we always do for another great show.

Insights Into Entertainment: Episode 64 "Rise of the Recipes"

Insights Into Entertainment: Episode 64 "Rise of the Recipes"

Will Disney save the NBA season and host the teams at Disney's Wide World of Sports? Disney and other Florida theme parks are working to develop a protocol to safely reopen when they are given the green light. To help us through another week of quarantine Disney is bringing back The Disney Family Singalong, this time Volume II.

May the 4th be with you as Disney brings Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker to Disney + on Star Wars Day! Even with the parks closed you might be lucky enough to spot Galaxy's edge branded Coke products in their distinctive containers at a store near you. Or you can make your own blue milk and green milk with this weeks make at home recipes to capture the Disney spirit.

Regal and AMC declare war on Universal for their stated intent to now release movies both in theaters and on streaming, threatening an already precarious theater industry. The Oscars take Covid into consideration and will allow streaming movies to be eligible for awards for this year only.

As always we'll wrap the show with our Insightful Picks of the Week!

This cricketing nation - Australia, Warne and the Boxing Day Test

This cricketing nation - Australia, Warne and the Boxing Day Test

The eloquent and encyclopaedic Gideon Haigh joins Diana and Donald to chat all things cricket. We learn about when and why cricket started in Australia, its greasy foothold in America and its unabating grip within the Indian sub continent.

Gideon reads a passage from his profile on Shane Warne featured in The Monthly in September 2005 ('Beach Boy'), which preceded a legendary Test match that summer and Gideon's book, On Warne.

We cover a lot of ground (sorry) in this special Christmas edition of Greenland, in which we zero in on one of the great Australian pastimes - playing or watching cricket. The Boxing Day Test is one of the fixtures on our national sporting calendar, played on the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Links to some stuff we refer to/further reading:

The enduring legacy of Phillip Hughes, article in The Australian by Gideon Haigh, 27 November 2019. This is a stunning reflection on a post-Hughes cricket world.

Gideon Haigh's most recent book, This is How I Will Strangle You is out now. It examines the tortuous experience of Natasa Christidou who was sexually abused by her father.

If (like Diana) you can't get enough of Gideon's writing, here's a link to all of his published work and website so you can devour it there.

A word about our cover art

Australia is currently experiencing raging bushfires across New South Wales and Queensland. Our fire brigades and volunteers have been absolutely stretched to the hilt and our whole community is trying to support them. A small way we're helping out at Greenland is to use this epic photo taken by John Donegan as our promo artwork for this episode on social channels. All proceeds of the sale of the photo are being donated to the NSW Rural Fire Service.

It's a beautiful photo that captures the spirit of our firefighters and the role of cricket in Australian life - in good and tough times.

If you'd to purchase the photo (and support the NSW Rural Fire Service)  you can do so here for A$55.
