Ep. 159 Sarah Bessey - Practices for an Evolving Faith

Ep. 159 Sarah Bessey - Practices for an Evolving Faith

Sarah Bessey's latest book is Field Notes for the Wilderness. And telling you that it is my favorite book I’ve ever read is no exaggeration. I love this book. It’s full of grace and love and welcome. I could go on and on. You need to get it. Like right now and then pull up a chair in front of the fire with a warm cup and go deep into the beauty and wonder of Sarah’s writing.

In this episode, Sarah Bessey discuss her journey of evolving faith and new book "Field Notes for the Wilderness." Bessey shares her experience of faith deconstruction as disorienting but empowering, finding support through community. She emphasizes that God's love is present even in our doubts.

She  explores practices for cultivating wonder in daily life through embodiment, Scripture and relationships. They discuss reclaiming repentance as a mind shift rather than shame, and peacemaking as justice work over status quo. Sarah reflects on navigating differing faith journeys in marriage through choosing each other.

Ultimately, Sarah encourages listeners in the wilderness to embrace their identity and find community, even if it means leaving old spaces. She recommends embracing the invitations of the Spirit and knowing you're not alone. This conversation provides wisdom and hope for those navigating spiritual transformation and an evolving faith.

Sarah Bessey is the author or editor of five books, including the New York Times bestseller A Rhythm of Prayer. She also leads Evolving Faith, a conference and online community for people who are reimagining their faith with hope. Bessey lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with her husband and their four children.

Deuteronomy 1-2 | Why Does God Harden Hearts?

Deuteronomy 1-2 | Why Does God Harden Hearts?

Deuteronomy 1-2 begins with Moses addressing the Israelites, reminding them of their journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land, and recounting their failures and successes along the way. He emphasizes the importance of obeying God's commands and warns them against rebellion, idolatry, and disobedience.

Moses then reminds the Israelites of their previous attempts to enter the Promised Land, which resulted in their failure due to their lack of faith and trust in God. He recounts their 40-year journey in the wilderness, during which time God provided for them, protected them, and disciplined them when necessary.

In chapter 2, Moses recounts the Israelites' journey through the lands of Edom, Moab, and Ammon, and how God instructed them not to attack these nations. He reminds them of God's promise to give them the land of Canaan, and how God helped them defeat Sihon, the king of the Amorites, and Og, the king of Bashan.

One of the main themes in Deuteronomy is the importance of obeying God's commands and the consequences of disobedience. This includes the concept of God hardening hearts, which is mentioned several times in the Bible, including here in Deuteronomy.

The idea of God hardening hearts can be difficult to understand, but it is generally interpreted as God allowing people to continue in their stubbornness and rebellion, rather than directly causing them to be disobedient. In other words, God is not forcing people to disobey, but is allowing them to exercise their free will and face the consequences of their choices.

Ultimately, the message of Deuteronomy is that obedience to God leads to blessings and prosperity, while disobedience leads to destruction and exile. The book emphasizes the importance of remembering God's faithfulness and the need to obey His commands in order to receive His blessings.
