The Film Nerds are here with a deep examination of one of the greatest forgotten war epics of all time - and one of the biggest independent productions in the industry's history. Hear the history of how the Allies arrived at Operation Market Garden, how legendary producer Joseph E Levine got hooked on the story of the battle & compelled the film forward, how the tale of hubris & Pyrrhic victory struggled to connect with the audiences of the 1970s, and much more! Our early season foray into epic filmmaking gets an independent twist that you won't want to miss!

    The Princess Bride (1987)

Taking two seasons to review The Princess Bride? Inconceivable!

The Film Nerds are back this week with their first ever dive into the worlds of high fantasy and romantic comedy with the 1987 cult classic directed by Rob Reiner and written by William Goldman. Sit back and enjoy a tale of how some of America's most powerful writing forces brought together a film considered "impossible" to make, the serendipity that assembled its cast, the film's wide-reaching appeal and message, and the joy evoked by one of the most quotable scripts in the history of cinema. A deep dive into a timeless classic? As you wish.

    PRINCESS BRIDE with James Griffith

    PRINCESS BRIDE with James Griffith
Once upon a time, I watched "The Princess Bride" with my daughter. She liked it but wanted more of the romance stuff in the beginning. Then my Princess Bride journey began. I read the movie's source material, William Goldman's playful, metatextual novel and thought maybe the playfulness and metatextualness is unneeded, considering the jewel of the story at the heart of the book. James and I have been talking about doing a swashbuckling/Erroll Flynn CDC episode for a while. So we talk about "Captain Blood" and "The Sea Hawk." Both are streaming on HBO Max but also elsewhere if you google their titles and the words "streaming" and "free." The Princess Bride, meanwhile, is on Disney Plus. I'll write more here later. Gotta movie on with my life right now (ha! I meant move on with my life but it's a podcast about movies so fun typo!) Show notes: The book I couldn't think of is "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman," by Laurence Sterne. I sort of mangle the description of Nabokov's "Pale Fire." I 100 percent stand by my endorsement of The War Nerd Iliad. Buy it here (https://www.amazon.com/War-Nerd-Iliad-John-Dolan/dp/1627310509)! Today! James was right, Goldman did write the screenplay for "All the Presidents Men." Also, I regret not mentioning my observation that Wallace Shawn stars in the biggest "Andre" movie (My Dinner With Andre) and stars with the biggest Andre ever in a movie (Andre the Giant).

First time you saw the movie?

    Plot:

-I like the grandpa previews the whole movie explaining what was going to be in the movie

    -Robin Wright was hot.

    -Epic opening, love and loss.

-No way they didn't know how funny the name Humperdink was.

-Pretty epic beginning... Royalty, a wedding, kidnapping.

-Love the use of miniatures with the boats. It's very awesomely 80's.

-OK, so the plan is to kidnap the princess, take her to another land, kill her, and make the price think it was those people to start a war?

-Inigo Montoya is a very honorable guy, helping Wesley up the cliff

-When they jump off the rock while fighting, you can definitely tell there is a pad where they land.

-The fight is so over te top, but in a good way.

-Its amazing how fast this movie moves. Already defeated Montoya and Fezzik

-I love the rodents are clearly dudes in a rodent suit

-It's a very basic story, but classic and timeless.

-When Buttercup tells off the prince, calling him a coward, it's so overdramatic

-Billy Crystal is so perfect for Miracle Max

    -Wuv, twu wuv...

    -Good fight with Inigo

    The end

Top Five Trivia of the movie:

    5 trivia

    1. Elwes wasn't the first choice for Westley

In fact, Oscar winner, Colin Firth was originally in the running to play Cary Elwes.

    2. Wrestler André the Giant didn't actually do any heavy lifting

Following a major back surgery, Andre the Giant (André René Roussimoff) could not lift any heavy objects, instead, the seven foot and 540-pound actor used a stunt double for the majority of his more physical scenes.

    3. One of the final scenes did not make the final cut

Before it was cut from the film, Fred Savage originally walked over to his window, after his grandfather had left and sees Fezzik, Inigo, Westley, and Buttercup all on riding on their white horses.

    4. Patinkin was thinking of his late father when he delivered his most famous line

When Patinki uttered his Spanish vow, "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die," he was sadly thinking of his father who has died of cancer a few years prior to reading the script.

    5. Elwes filmed many scenes with a broken toe

Six weeks into production, Elwes had an accident in an ATV (which was used to transport Andre on set, because he didn't fit into the crew van), leaving him with a broken toe. Initially, Elwes tried to hide his injury from the director, but they ended up using trick photography to hide his limp in many of his scenes.

    Marathon Man (1976)

    Marathon Man (1976)

    “Is it safe?”

If that question sounds eerily familiar to you spoken through a deep German accent, then you’ve experienced this movie before, and if not, then you’re in for ONE hell of a ride!

That dialogue is spoken by the late, great Sir Laurence Olivier delivering one of his finest latter career performances and also receiving an Oscar nomination for his work.

Dustin Hoffman is the main star however as the titular character, a marathon runner/grad student who inadvertently gets involved in a nasty plot involving diamonds, torture, and former Nazi officers now walking among us….in 1976 mind you.

It also co-stars ‘70’s icon Roy Scheider along with William Devane and Marthe Keller.  Directed by John Schlesinger and written by William Goldman. Let’s revisit one of the more memorable conspiracy thrillers of the 1970’s.
