Welcome to another extra spooky episode of the Wheel of Crime Podcast. Today on the show, Em and Jenn dive into two cases of modern day witchcraft. Emily talks about the case of Michael Bear Carson and Suzan Bear Carson, two self-proclaimed witch hunters from the San Francisco Bay Area. Jenn talks about witch hunts disguised as covers for murder in theft in India's  fifth-largest state Gujarat. 

The years 1692-1693 were some of the darkest times in American history. They were the years when mass hysteria ruled the land and young girls were inexplicably stricken with fits of screaming, barking, shaking, and crying. It was a group of roughly 9 girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, who were taken at their fantastical word of being physically tormented by certain members of their own village which eventually led to over 200 people being accused of witchcraft. Nineteen of those accused were hung and one was pressed to death. Here in our last episode of our first season, we take an in-depth look at the fascinating yet heart-breaking time in our history known as The Salem Witch Trials.

It was the OG of witch hunts in what would become the United States. Between January and October of 1692, hundreds of colonists in and around Salem Village and Salem Town were accused of one of the worst possible things you could be accused of: Witchcraft. There was no way to defend yourself as neighbors, friends and family pointed the finger at you and accused you of signing the Devil's book while your spirit tormented others. And at the center of it all was an unlikely group of accusers: Girls. Teenagers and children suddenly had the attention of everyone as they became the main people to point the finger. At the end of it all, 20 innocent people would be killed as "witches." To this day, it's a piece of history that still baffles many. Why did it happen? How did it happen? And how do we make sure it doesn't happen again?

WTF Moments:

• Salem was not the first town to accuse people of witchcraft, in fact, a “witchcraft craze” rippled through Europe from the 1300's to the end of the 1600's.
• A “witchcraft act” was passed in 1562 in England, and stated that any behavior or practice even remotely associated with witchcraft was deemed illegal. By 1644, the English government actually created an official position called the Witchfinder General - what a title!
• Fourteen women and five men were hanged after being accused of practicing witchcraft. Two dogs were even hung, for supposedly giving people the evil eye - I'm sorry, I don't see how puppy eyes can look evil?  A cat mayyybe...
• Torture to get a confession was also a common practice during the trials. Usually, it would lead to bizarre and fanatical confessions.  The court's favorite torture techniques included: bound submersion, pressing and dunking/waterboarding - they loved it.
• During the trials, pretty much no one was immune to the accusations of witchcraft, even ministers. This became especially true for George Burroughs, the first and only minister during the trials to be accused of witchcraft. He was sentenced to death, and because of the heat wave, was buried quickly in a shallow grave with his chin and foot still sticking out of the ground.
• The governor of Salem let the trials continue for a full year until he caught wind that his own wife was accused of being a witch. After that, he put a swift end to the trials - pretty f*cked up, eh governor?
• ALL of the accusers were women ages 9-20.
• Witches were not allowed to be buried, because they were considered too unholy. Instead, their bodies were dumped into a crevice next to Gallows Hill, known as a witch pit.
• All of the women who confessed to witchcraft in Salem lived, and all of the women who denied the witchcraft charges were hanged.
