    First Commission Experience

    First Commission Experience

Getting your first commission is something you’ll never forget. In this episode of Thriving Women Artists, Sarah, Ping, and Dorien will talk about their first commissions, what they learned from it, and what they would do differently now. Listen in to find out what the trio would recommend you add to your first commission check-list.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Your first work might not pay very much but a little exposure can be good. It’s bad to undersell yourself but for the first few commissions most artists will make that sacrifice.
    • It can be good to meet a client face to face and get a feel for what they are looking for. The more you know someone the easier you will find it to get on the same page.
    • Make sure you agree what your work will be used for and have your terms of use agreed. Make it clear that the art you make for a client can only be used for that stated purpose. If those terms aren’t adhered to, then don’t be afraid to bring it up with the client.
    • One-size-fits-all isn’t the best approach to commissioned art. That goes both for your work and how you work with the client.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It was nice to be chosen to do this work’

‘I was a little angry about it and should have said something’

‘If someone pays a lot then I always feel like I have to give it all’

‘It’s up to me to say yes or no’

    Caroline Gormley, Made In Paisley

    Caroline Gormley, Made In Paisley

This week's episode see's Leo in conversation with artist and arts facilitator Caroline Gormley
    -
Caroline Gormley is a Scottish artist, based in Paisley. She studied art at Glasgow Kelvin College, obtaining a 1st class degree, before starting up Made In Paisley alongside artist Alexander Guy.
    -
Caroline's route into art was not a direct one, having been a carer from the age of 12 she has spent most of her life looking after others and only at the age of 40 did she decide to apply for art school. Her journey since then has been one of positivity and community, sparked by her meeting Alexander Guy.
    -
Made In Paisley is an arts studio that offers art classes to children and adults. Through learning how to handle paint, it offers the opportunity for many people to encounter creativity, form a community and take a break from the stress of the outside world. Paisley is known for its industrial heritage as much as for the textile production of the same name, but within this is a beating heart of creativity that can be seen alive and well within Caroline and Alexander's community.
    -
During our chat, we discussed Caroline's early years and how she eventually followed the artistic calling that was always there.  We talked about the hardships and pains of painting, alongside the joy and freedom it can bring. Within all this we considered the motives behind her own personal artistic style and the importance of being true to oneself.
    -
Thank you so much to Caroline for coming on the podcast.

Verity Babbs & Joséphine May Bailey. Aurelia Arts Festival

Verity Babbs & Joséphine May Bailey. Aurelia Arts Festival

In this week's episode, Leo chats to Verity Babbs and Joséphine May Bailey about their latest venture, Aurelia Arts Festival.

Our chat covers their earliest experiences with art, their time at Oxford University where they met studying History of Art, the experiences they have had in the arts, both good and bad; from dealing with huge commercial galleries through to defending their degree choice at parties. Along with this we talked about the impact of Instagram on the arts network and the issues of privilege in the arts.
    -
We discussed their reasons for founding Aurelia Arts Festival and what we can expect from their opening on the 1st September 2020. The festival will consist of a virtual viewing room, online artwork listing, catalogue, IGTV live interviews, studio tours, and more. They are working to give a platform to the very best emerging and underrepresented women* artists.
    -
It is a really fun episode with lots of laughs, I hope you enjoy!
