The life-saving magic of embodiment with Alison Rothman

The life-saving magic of embodiment with Alison Rothman

Episode #58 // Alison Rothman, Body-Centered Holistic Empowerment Coach and yoga practitioner // How can we use what's already inside of us to heal from trauma and cultivate resilience?

TW: trauma, gun violence, eating disorders, addiction

I’m so excited to bring you a conversation with Body-Centered Holistic Empowerment Coach and yoga practitioner Alison Rothman.  Alison is a fellow Boulderite and podcaster- her show is called Embodied and Awake, and she’s also the mom of a teenage boy.

Through healing from her her experiences with trauma, addiction, and an eating disorder (please consider this your trigger warning), she learned to reconnect with her true self and has since made it her mission to share the tools she used in her own healing journey to help others in her practice.

In this episode, she shares her story and how, after decades of being disconnected from herself, a practice of embodiment led her back to herself and how that has literally saved her life and her sanity over and over again. She shares what it means to be embodied, why it matters, and how you can start becoming more embodied right now.

If you know me at all you know I am passionate about intuitive eating and one of the reasons why is that every time we restrict our food or deny our appetites we are essentially training ourselves to disconnect from our true selves. But our true self is where all our power is. It’s the home of our, emotions, our authentic voice and our intuition, and we NEED to honor it in order to live a life that’s aligned with our values and to fully express our gifts.

Intuitive Eating Principle 1: Reject the Diet Mentality (Part 2) | Ep. 54

Intuitive Eating Principle 1: Reject the Diet Mentality (Part 2) | Ep. 54

No matter what you've seen on Instagram, intuitive eating is about so much more than eating whatever you want whenever you want. It's not the hunger/fullness diet. It's not license to eat donuts all day every day or permission to never eat a vegetable again.

Intuitive eating (which is based on the eponymous book by dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Eileen Resch, originally published in the 90s), is based on ten principles — the first of which is Reject the Diet Mentality.

This episode is part of a series on Intuitive Eating where I'm exploring each of the ten principles. I've already released two episodes in the series; if you haven't heard them yet, you can check them out:

Episode 44: What is Intuitive Eating?

Episode 47: Intuitive Eating Principle 1: Reject the Diet Mentality (Part 2)

While episode 47 focuses on what the diet mentality is, in this episode, I'm talking about why it's such an important aspect of intuitive eating, including some research that highlights the futility of dieting/intentional weight loss, the (weak) link between weight and health, and the importance of healthy behaviors (regardless of weight).

Ten-Minute Tuesday| Intuitive Eating Principle 1: Reject the Diet Mentality (part one) | ep 47

Intuitive eating isn't as simple as eating when you're hungry and stopping when you're full,  There are ten principles, and in this quick solo episode, I discuss the first principle: reject the diet mentality.  This is a big one, so I'm covering it in more than one episode, starting with simply defining the diet mentality. Listen to find out what the diet mentality is (and isn't) and subscribe to make sure you don't miss future episodes where I'll dive into why the diet mentality is generally incompatible with intuitive eating and how to actually change your mindset.

Well huzzahs - huzzahs to you for listening, huzzahs to anyone whose voice or sound effects or music or handiwork of some kind contributed to making this podcast - we are at the final episode of Season One.

And I DO hope to make Season two! What shall we do? What to explore / to highlight / help raise awareness of? Ping us if you know - quirkyvoices@gmail.com

Thanks again to the Pulse Award funding for enabling this fun and informative pod to happen.

In this episode Charlie is still in her panic bath, trying to hide from Gabby and Rachel - but Gabby has other ideas and appears at her window - things do however go....slightly awry.

In the main interview section I talk all things mental health with the condition, and things I have tried to help me over the years. Julie Wheeler tells us how and when to recognise that maybe we need to seek medical professional help, and kindly signposts further places to gain help and information to help you.

This has been a superbly enlightening series to create - I know, I know it is ambitious, but I truly hope the format and info within helps someone gain confidence in themselves to be proactive and seek help, for listeners to reach out to pals or family, and for people to realise they are not alone in their suffering, they do not have to be, and there is help out there - even now, in this crazy. All useful links for eczema as well as all the medical conditions we have explored are on the Quirky Voices Website here, along with the sound effect list of downloaded and used sounds from Freesound.

SO. THANK YOU for your support - please do share this pod far and wide to help it get to the people I made it for, and, if that is you, hugs from here to there for whatever you are going through. You will get through this. You will rebuild yourself.

So Thank you for listening, and sharing.

And....to my cast especially -  Heartfelt thanks - to the regulars Diane Alexander, Lucy Shirley, Lara Parker, Kirstin Stansfield - I bloody love you - but you know that. And to my cameo players - Fiona Thraille and Paul Golding - couldn't have done this without you! Thank youp.

To all the extra work Fiona Thraille has put in - it deserves at least a medal - thank you - and please do check out her amazing fiction awesome on the Dashing Onions Website here.

In our audio fiction today, Gabby talks about her experience of hyper-anxiety, comparing herself to other mums, being cross with her husband peacefully sleeping when she's wide awake...the girls rally round to show Gabby the best support they can - by listening and enabling Gabby talk - and Flo... in a state of highness from her anxiety drugs does something to make Gabby feel....special! This was SO MUCH fun to record! I cannot divulge if bra's were or were not burnt in this episode!

The wonderful Tracy Greenwood of The Blackpool Teaching Hospital’s NHS Trust talks about how folks - not just mums but dad's too - can start to recognise that they may need help - the signs and signals to look out for. I am hugely grateful to Tracy for giving up her time and sharing her fantastic expertise.....

In the last of her interviews, Lara Parker talks top tips coping once babe has arrived, talks of the importance of supportive partners and surviving poonamis. I am sure you'll agree, Lara is amazing...for sharing such a personal part of her life's journey to hopefully help others, and to make a difference.
