    =88. Chungking Express w/ Ryan

Delve into the beauty of Wong Kar-wai's cinema with the fellas this week via CHUNGKING EXPRESS, an instant classic from early 90s Hong Kong. Prominently featuring music (originally) by The Cranberries and The Mama's & the Papa's, this split narrative confounds traditionally held notions of cinema and sinks its teeth into the human experience. Joined by Wong Kar-wai superfan Ryan, Charlie and Antonio explore the elusive nature of love and the moving picture.

Intro/outro music: 'Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ' BWV 639 by Johann Sebastian Bach from Tarkovsky's 'Solaris'.

CHUNGKING EXPRESS (1994), Hong Kong, written by Wong Kar-wai, directed by Wong Kar-wai, cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Andrew Lau, featuring Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Faye Wong, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Brigitte Lin Chin-Hsia.

    The Heroic Trio

    The Heroic Trio

Hit Factory's heroic duo take on Johnnie To's 1993 Honk Kong action spectacular, 'The Heroic Trio'. It's a super hero origin story featuring three of Hong Kong cinema's most remarkable leading women - Anita Mui, Michelle Yeoh, & Maggie Cheung - and a wellspring of imagination & style unrivaled by western action movies of the era.

We discuss the dynamic burst of imagination at the center of Hong Kong's Golden Era of action cinema that birthed the talents of To, Tsui Hark, John Woo and countless others, the film's nuanced and progressively feminine approach to its storytelling, the brilliant costume design...and the movie's commendable contempt toward children.

The Criterion Break is back again, continuing our miniseries on Wong Kar-Wai. The next films in the beautiful World of Wong Kar-Wai box set are Chungking Express and Fallen Angels. Ke Huy Quan on Returning to Acting [Replay]

Ke Huy Quan on Returning to Acting [Replay]

Producer's note: When we prepped Jordan's new intro to this amazing interview from April of '22, I had jotted something down like, "who could have dreamed back then that he'd go on to win all the awards." Jordan rightly called this out, because (as she says here) she, and other critics, DID dream that. What I'd meant was: it seemed like one of those performances and films that you hope will be both lauded AND awarded, but you aren't holding your breath for the latter. How thrilling to be wrong sometimes.

Watch Ke Huy Quan accept his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

    ***

As a kid, he was Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies. But as he got older, Ke Huy Quan began to feel that there wasn't really a place for him in front of the camera. After decades of telling himself he didn't miss acting, Crazy Rich  Asians made a splash, and Ke began to think that maybe it was time to get back to acting. Ke opens up about all of that, and landing in the perfect threefold role of Waymond, Alpha Waymond, and CEO Waymond in Everything Everywhere All At Once

And then, Jordan has one quick thing about Bend it Like Beckham's 20th anniversary.

In the Mood for Love [2000]

In the Mood for Love [2000]

Jackie and Greg revel in the sumptuous vibes that are Wong Kar Wai's IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE from 2000. Topics of discussion include the film's controversial new restoration, how it slots into WKW's filmography, its use of shorthand and subtle visual cues to convey the story, and how the extensive deleted scenes re-frame the events of the film.
