Ep 76 - Remote Work, In-Person Work, and Your Mental Health

A recent article by Fast Company, stated “Eighty-three percent of women who have been working remotely since or any time after the pandemic began, want to continue to work remotely. Sixty-nine percent of those women want to be full-time remote, while 20% are interested in a combination of remote and in-person work. That is a substantial number of women who are trying to balance and advance their careers while also providing for their families.

In Episode 76, I'm discussing the pros and con's of working remotely, working fully in person, and working in a hybrid situation and how the key to your success starts with taking care of your mental health.

Bestselling Author Dale Russakoff on Being a Southern Woman at Harvard, Ambition at 71, and How Family Matters Most

Bestselling Author Dale Russakoff on Being a Southern Woman at Harvard, Ambition at 71, and How Family Matters Most

Today, Debbie talks to Dale Russakoff, a veteran reporter for The Washington Post, a bestselling author, and a classmate from her Harvard/Radcliffe class of 1974.

They talk about her surprising experience at Harvard as a woman from the South, her distinguished career as a journalist, and the importance of family.

Debbie knew that Dale had been a reporter for The Washington Post for almost 30 years. And that she is the author of a best-selling book, THE PRIZE. But in this episode she told Debbie something she'd never heard before: what it was like to be a Southern girl at Harvard. Dale, who had a Southern accent then, said she was reluctant to open her mouth at first.

She'd grown up in Birmingham, AL and when she arrived in Cambridge she learned that the Radcliffe admissions committee hadn’t admitted a woman from the South in many years, unless she had gone to a Northern boarding school. The committee thought girls who grew up and went to school in the South wouldn't have “the values" Radcliffe wanted; i.e. they would be racist.

She and Debbie talk about what it was like to be a female student in the man's world of Harvard, how "ambition" fit into her college years and, later, how it related to Dale's career in journalism. They talk about the importance of family, including grandchildren. And how she feels AT. CAPACITY. (i.e. too busy) in semi-retirement, at age 71.

Ep 70 - Venting and Ranting for Stress Relief

Venting is a great way to let off steam, clear your head, and find support when you're stressed out, but when you're venting and ranting about the same thing over and over, you're making things worse.

In Episode 70, I'm talking about how venting to feel better, but never letting go or resolving anything keeps you stressed, and stuck, and can even push people away.

I'm sharing simple steps you can take when you need to vent that make venting productive, still feel good, and move you toward solutions so you don't keep rolling around in the same problem over and over.

If you're stuck in the cycle of unproductive venting, SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION CALL to talk with me 1:1. We’ll have a conversation about things that feel good in your life right now and things that don’t and I’ll help you see the places that you can start making changes.

    Memorable Moments:

10:17 My legacy Leadership Program is all about helping people get clearer about who they want to influence, how they want to influence, and the positive change that they want to create in people's lives, in their communities, and in their families.

13:14 Women tend to underestimate themselves and their leadership effectiveness. And they're always surprised and humbled to see how effective they truly are when we conduct a leadership assessment in the form of a 360. Women underestimate themselves and they are often underestimated in the workplace, just due to gender bias. Beliefs that people hold about women's place in the workplace, women's place in the world, and some of those things are generational and there's still a stronghold on some of those old, outdated beliefs. And women also struggle more with work life integration than men. Career planning can be a little bit more dynamic for women, just because their priorities can ebb and flow as they choose to have families and focus on different areas of their life or their work. Many of the leadership challenges are the same, but there's some gender differences that are unique to women.

29:28 The advice I often give the women leaders that I work with is don't give away your power. Claim your power and use it for good.
