In this episode, Mark Manduca, the newly appointed chief investment officer of GXO Logistics, discusses the new company and its role in the logistics industry. GXO is the result of a split in the logistics and warehousing segments of the large worldwide company, XPO Logistics. GXO has been created to assume the contract warehousing business. At its launch in a few weeks, it will become the second-largest firm of its kind in the world. Manduca shares about GXO's industry role and company vision as  a new player with a powerful heritage.

The demand for warehouse space just continues to grow. New data shows that capacity will still not meet the demand for new distribution space. A perfect storm has converged to keep warehouse capacity high, including less new construction during the pandemic and also the growth of e-commerce and consumer demand. Is there any letup in sight?

Financial firms are continuing to make significant investments in logistics and technology companies. What is driving confidence in this market and why are logistics firms so attractive for investment dollars?

Klappich shares the latest research Gartner has done into these fascinating and quickly-evolving technologies.
 
Many companies held on to their cash during the pandemic, and now there is more incentive to move forward on projects that have been kept on hold for the past year. New research predicts how companies will spend their money during the remainder of this year.

And earnings reports came out this past week for the fourth quarter of 2020. Two organizations in particular give us reason to hope that there are better days ahead for the supply chain industry and the overall economy. The United States Postal Service and XPO both showed profits in that quarter, but the challenges for getting back to normal are still enormous.

In this episode, guest Phil Rich, chief supply chain officer and senior VP of Sweetwater, talks about being an online retailer during a very different holiday season. Sweetwater is the nation's largest e-tailer for musical instruments and audio equipment. Increasing inventories and gaining better visibility with suppliers were key steps the company has taken. How can American companies prepare for new ways of trading in the UK and the EU?  We discuss how many are taking a two-pronged approach to reach European customers.
