323: Vermont’s Wunderkammer Tells Mixed Culture Stories Beyond the Barnyard

323: Vermont’s Wunderkammer Tells Mixed Culture Stories Beyond the Barnyard
Over the course of his decade-and-a-half, bicoastal brewing career, Vasili Gletsos has brewed a wide range of beer styles on an equal wide range of brewing systems. But after launching Wunderkammer (https://www.wunderkammerbier.com) as a personal brand while serving as head brewer for Hill Farmstead, he ultimately decided to make it his focus, building out a simple brewery with an old dairy tank mash tun and a wood-fired copper kettle to make mixed culture beers that tell stories. Through foraging and engaging with the landscape around him, he continues to make beer that feels not just rooted and local, but thoughtfully considered and artful. He’s particular about ingredients and fermentation, searching for mixed culture expressions that don’t simply lean on clichés of the genre. “Part of the power of mixed culture beer is that I find it very transportive,” he says. “It brings you to a time and place—but I don’t always want that time and place to be a barnyard.” In this episode, Gletsos discusses his mixed culture process, including: differentiating Wunderkammer from Hill Farmstead’s mixed culture program choosing Brettanomyces strains for more favorable flavors brewing on a very simple wood-fired brewhouse working in layers blending stainless fermentation and wood puncheon aging using foraged ingredients like yarrow cold side versus hot side additions of foraged ingredients And more. Herbs for Kids: Money-Saving Summer First Aid Tips for Parents

Herbs for Kids: Money-Saving Summer First Aid Tips for Parents

Hey there mommas! Are you ready to learn some cool first aid tips for your little ones during this summer season? Well, I've got some great news for you because in this podcast episode, I'm going to share some valuable money-saving tips along with three awesome herbs that can come in handy in various first aid situations.

First up, we have plantain - and no, I'm not talking about the starchy banana-like thingy! This plantain is a herb that can provide short-term relief from bee stings, cuts, and splinters. It can also help with respiratory infections, sunburns, and burns. But wait, it gets even cooler - its leaves can also be used as cool band-aids! Kids will love it!

Next on our list is comfrey - the herb that's loaded with allantoin, a magical medicinal constituent that can regenerate skin cells. Comfrey is perfect for healing and repairing damaged tissue from cuts and scrapes, as well as sprains, strains, and broken bones. But hold on tight, my friends, comfrey should not be used internally by those with liver health issues. Safety first, peeps!

Last but not least, we have yarrow - a herb that's easy to grow in your garden or even found in the wild. Yarrow can be used for bleeding wounds, help fight off infection, and aid in wound healing. So basically, it's like having a little superhero in your herb garden!

[Ep. 3] Healing With Herbs: Yarrow | Aemen Bell (Herbalist & Astrotherapist)

[Ep. 3] Healing With Herbs: Yarrow | Aemen Bell (Herbalist & Astrotherapist)

This episode was recorded in my back garden. You can hear the birds and occasional car as the Sun was setting over the mountains. I had the pleasure of interviewing my wife, Aemen Bell, about her own healing journey, her herbal philosophies, and the many healing benefits of Yarrow. Yarrow is a common herb that is most likely growing right by your yard around in early Summer. It is a powerful herb that can clean the blood, heal skin conditions, and even be a possible ally for helping to heal the Coronavirus. For more info on Aemen's work, you can visit www.artemisrisingherbs.com or follow her on Instagram at aemen_bell.

The Matter of the Heart - Dr. Florian Birkmayer - Holistic Psychiatrist - Aromatherapy for Healing Your Mind, Emotions and Soul

The Matter of the Heart - Dr. Florian Birkmayer - Holistic Psychiatrist - Aromatherapy for Healing Your Mind, Emotions and Soul
How many of you listeners have heard of a holistic psychiatrist? Dr. Floirian Birkmayer was a conventional psychiatrist and became disenchanted with the profession. He then embraced his new profession, holistic psychiatry. Dr. Birkmayer is a wounded healer, ceremonialist teacher, an EAT therapist and works with the aromas of essential oils transforming the entire psyche, including body, mind and spirit. Did any of you ever hear of a holistic psychiatrist? Did you ever think that the aroma of an essential oil can help the healing process such as a past trauma? Can the scent of an essential oil bypass the intellect for the process of healing? Can the aroma communicate with the unconscious? What was the stimuli that propelled Dr. Birkmayer to change his conventional psychiatry profession and become a holistic psychiatrist? He discusses with host Carol why he was tired of prescribing medication to his patients with no real results with their behavior. What is DSM? What is the meaning of a statistical doctor? What are some of his healing stories and how does the soul play into the healing process? Do we really know about the unconscious mind? Can the aromas of essential oils tap into past traumas. Dr. Birkmayer believes that most major illnesses stem from traumas. He also speaks of St. Francis and Buddhism. What is the collective unconscious? How important is our sense of smell? Do you know that smell travels straight to the brain? What is the nature of plants? Are they more competitive or more communal with each other? He also talks about Marcel Proust. How do we tap into the messages of our psyche? Did you know that the ego is afraid of the unconscious? How is spirit affected by a scent? How does Carl Jung play into this? Dr. Florian Birkmayer has a strong passion for aromatherapy for the healing process. He became disillusioned with the concept of prescribing medication with little results. This podcast on The Matter of the Heart will give you much to think about, even reflect on someone who has been seeing a conventional psychiatrist for years. It's The Matter of the Heart with Dr. Florian Birkmayer, holistic psychiatrist and host Carol Olivia Adams
