This episode entails stories of ghosts - such as the Japanese Yokai - and other stuff - such as exorcisms and stupid people marrying ghosts.

Back in the early 80s, a series of unexplained incidents in a medical laboratory led to the discovery of a phenomenon called the Fear Frequency—an inaudible vibration that can cause people to sense and even see things that aren’t there. Is it possible that infrasound frequencies may be responsible for at least some reports of paranormal activity? Podcast hosts Vince and Jane ponder this and other spooky subjects, including the supernatural entities of Japanese folklore, mystery spots where cars roll uphill, and the Satanic panic that gripped the nation forty years ago. Also, the Ghostkeepers pop into the Castle of Spirits library to share two true ghost stories: “Road Rage,” an account of driver who witnesses a phantom car crash on a winding road just outside Pittsburgh; and “Ghosts of Okinawa,” a chilling tale plucked from the brand-new October 2022 story submissions.

We talk a lot about the history of internment and anti-asian prejudice in the US, about Alma’s heritage and career, and the unique perspective it gives her on the topic. But don’t worry, just as it’s all about to get worryingly serious –the spider demons pop in to lighten the mood!

Joey Madia joins the show to talk about the Japanese Paranormal culture.
Yūrei (幽霊) are figures in Japanese folklore analogous to the Western model of ghosts. The name consists of two kanji, 幽 (yū), meaning "faint" or "dim" and 霊 (rei), meaning "soul" or "spirit". Alternative names include 亡霊 (Bōrei), meaning ruined or departed spirit, 死霊 (Shiryō) meaning dead spirit, or the more encompassing 妖怪 (Yōkai) or お化け (Obake). Oni (demons) and yurei (ghosts) have played a role in Japanese culture for thousands of years, and stories of new spirits continue to be told today.  
Aokigahara (青木ヶ原, 'Blue Tree Meadow'), also known as the Sea of Trees (樹海, Jukai), is a forest on the northwestern flank of Mount Fuji. Parts of Aokigahara are very dense, and the porous lava rock absorbs sound, contributing to a sense of solitude that some visitors attribute to the forest.

We consider the Yokai-like monster No Face (from Spirited Away) as a potential pet. 

All of the standard pet evaluation questions are asked: 

• Exactly how much of an elephant does he need to eat to mimic it? 
• If he eats you, and goes to jail for cryptocurrency fraud are you in jail as well? 
• Is there a No Face drinking game? 
• How many cats can you feed him and should you include laser pointers in his diet?

After all, deep down, what does the metaphorical No Face in all of us really want?
