The Fear Frequency - Castle of Spirits True Ghost Stories

The Fear Frequency - Castle of Spirits True Ghost Stories

Back in the early 80s, a series of unexplained incidents in a medical laboratory led to the discovery of a phenomenon called the Fear Frequency—an inaudible vibration that can cause people to sense and even see things that aren’t there. Is it possible that infrasound frequencies may be responsible for at least some reports of paranormal activity? Podcast hosts Vince and Jane ponder this and other spooky subjects, including the supernatural entities of Japanese folklore, mystery spots where cars roll uphill, and the Satanic panic that gripped the nation forty years ago. Also, the Ghostkeepers pop into the Castle of Spirits library to share two true ghost stories: “Road Rage,” an account of driver who witnesses a phantom car crash on a winding road just outside Pittsburgh; and “Ghosts of Okinawa,” a chilling tale plucked from the brand-new October 2022 story submissions.

Jitters, Jumps, and More With Japanese Lore

This week on Legends & Spirits we’ll pay a visit to the great island nation of Japan where we’ll dive into legends & lore of the Yokai - from creepy critters to comforting creatures. We’ll also have special guests David Ovitsky and Shannon McGee  give us a true master class on Japanese whiskey.

In this week’s Macabre Mixology we’ll wash down our whiskey tasting with a zesty libation perfect for the summertime blues…and we don’t mean an evil Oni! In our Spooky Saloons we’ll head to the nation’s capital, Tokyo,  to visit a kitschy watering hole that leans in to the spooky stories surrounding the Yokai…

    Welcome to Legends and Spirits!

89 – Alma Katsu and the Hatred that Never Seems to Die

89 – Alma Katsu and the Hatred that Never Seems to Die

This week Alma Katsu brings her brand of immaculate historical horror to Talking Scared.

After the The Hunger upped the ante on the Donner Party, and The Deep gave us a sinking feeling about the Titanic, Alma is back with The Fervor – a book too dark to write a pun about.

It’s a tale of haunting and conspiracy during   the years of Japanese internment in the US. Spanning multiple states, and multiple POV’s, it weaves a story of anger, prejudice and hate that seems all too familiar today.

We talk a lot about the history of internment and anti-asian prejudice in the US, about Alma’s heritage and career, and the unique perspective it gives her on the topic. But don’t worry, just as it’s all about to get worryingly serious –the spider demons pop in to lighten the mood!

    Enjoy!

Other books mentioned in this episode include:

    • The Hunger (2018), by Alma Katsu
    • The Deep (2020), by Alma Katsu
    • The Pallbearer’s Club (2022), by Paul Tremblay
    • The Devil Takes You Home (2022), by Gabino Iglesias
    • The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of the Donner Party (2009), by Daniel James Brown

The Fervor is published on April 26th, by G.P. Putnam. It will be released in the UK in October, by Titan.

S2E2 - Bloody Mary (Ft. Ash Millman)

S2E2 - Bloody Mary (Ft. Ash Millman)

Grab a lit candle, find a mirror, and chant her name 3x!  This week, we summon our guest from all the way the across the pond - the legendary phantom-in-the-reflection herself, BLOODY MARY (Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary)! She is voiced by the equally legendary Ash Millman, video presenter and content producer for Playstation Access & formerly WhatCulture Horror. Follow Ash Millman on Instagram and Twitter @ashmillman.

Take what you know about this centuries-enduring ghost story and toss it out like yesterday's fish & chips, as we discuss three contributing real-life histories that created this campfire cocktail: Queen Mary I, Mary, Queen of Scots, and the blood-bathing Countess Elizabeth Báthory. We also touch on Hanako-San, the Japanese Yokai in the form of a young school girl who haunts the lavatories, as well as several psychological explanations for many of the horrific testimonies akin to Bloody Mary over the years.

You can check us out on Spotify, Apple, Listen Notes, Deezer, Podchaser, Audible, iHeart Radio, and other podcast directories as well as right here on our very own website. EP: 164 Japanese Ghosts, Demons and the Aokigahara Forest

EP: 164 Japanese Ghosts, Demons and the Aokigahara Forest

Joey Madia joins the show to talk about the Japanese Paranormal culture.
Yūrei (幽霊) are figures in Japanese folklore analogous to the Western model of ghosts. The name consists of two kanji, 幽 (yū), meaning "faint" or "dim" and 霊 (rei), meaning "soul" or "spirit". Alternative names include 亡霊 (Bōrei), meaning ruined or departed spirit, 死霊 (Shiryō) meaning dead spirit, or the more encompassing 妖怪 (Yōkai) or お化け (Obake). Oni (demons) and yurei (ghosts) have played a role in Japanese culture for thousands of years, and stories of new spirits continue to be told today.
Aokigahara (青木ヶ原, 'Blue Tree Meadow'), also known as the Sea of Trees (樹海, Jukai), is a forest on the northwestern flank of Mount Fuji. Parts of Aokigahara are very dense, and the porous lava rock absorbs sound, contributing to a sense of solitude that some visitors attribute to the forest.

EP 12: No Face from Spirited Away - Transactional Cat Swallowing

EP 12: No Face from Spirited Away - Transactional Cat Swallowing

We consider the Yokai-like monster No Face (from Spirited Away) as a potential pet.

All of the standard pet evaluation questions are asked:

    • Exactly how much of an elephant does he need to eat to mimic it?
    • If he eats you, and goes to jail for cryptocurrency fraud are you in jail as well?
    • Is there a No Face drinking game?
    • How many cats can you feed him and should you include laser pointers in his diet?

After all, deep down, what does the metaphorical No Face in all of us really want?
