Remember Piano Lessons? (with Andrew McMahon)

Remember Piano Lessons? (with Andrew McMahon)

On this episode of the podcast, Vanessa and Jonah are joined by musician Andrew McMahon (Something Corporate, Jack's Mannequin) to discuss how he defied the odds and instead of quitting piano lessons like we did, became a professional musician who wheeled a sticker-covered piano onto the stage of the Warped Tour and has became a well-respected musician who admittedly never really uses music theory. Vanessa and Andrew also finally reconcile a long-standing dispute about Andrew not emailing her back when she reached out to him as a complete stranger to talk about their shared cancer diagnosis and Jonah admits that he recently pulled a similar move when he was diagnosed with his own type of leukemia in 2019. We also play a special version of CEO TAKEDOWN: SOMETHING CORPORATE edition where we debate the Ok Go/Post Cereal controversy, the "Pepsi, Where's My Jet?" documentary and our complicated thoughts about A&W Root Beer's mascot. Be sure to check out Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness' new album "Tilt At The Wind No More" when it comes out on March 31st, just don't email him to tell him your thoughts because he probably won't write you back!

Jesse is a musician and producer best known as the bass player of the British pop-rock band, Keane. Alongside performance, Jesse has dedicated his voice as a campaigner for music accessibility in schools. Including a recent interview with the BBC lobbying the government to support and fund music in schools.

He also founded and runs a community arts centre called Old Jet on an abandoned U.S. Air Force base in the English countryside near Suffolk.

We discuss how collaboration and community are key in the music industry, and how education today supports but also sometimes fails young musicians and artists.

How does the love of music -- and the creative impulsive to change/adapt it -- get transmitted across generations? I interview L.A. musician and producer Josh Shpak about his journey. Learning from jazz masters, from legendary trumpet/trombone player Mic Gillette (one of the original members of Oakland's powerhouse Tower of Power) and a myriad of other influences on both the East and West coasts, Josh has matured into the rare musician who can create a jazz album of depth and unique sonic textures and then turn around and produce pop music that is fresh and contemporary.

Here is a YouTube video of young Josh being taught the beginning of "You're Still a Young Man" by Mic Gillette: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A03u7f3t_to
and here is the video of Josh being brought ontstage to perform the song, live, with Tower of Power when he was 17 years old: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVA12k6moz4

    Episode 5: Jdan | Producer/Keys Player

    Episode 5: Jdan | Producer/Keys Player

For episode 5, I got together with Jahmaine, a producer known as Jdan Productions. Through LCM management, he got the opportunity to produce the song Clout that was in Nines’ album, Crabs In A Bucket. The single flew to the top 50 in the single charts, was a MOBO-nominated track, and the album hit #1. Jahmaine also produced Never Really Mine by Dutchavelli

During our session, he reveals how both tracks came to be used by the artists – and it wasn’t your usual journey for a music producer!

    Episode 4: Ojay Beats/Owen William | Producer/Artist/DJ

    Episode 4: Ojay Beats/Owen William | Producer/Artist/DJ

In this episode I talk with a music maker from Leeds, who uses three names to forge his music career. As producer he goes under the name of Ojay Beats and as singer/songwriter, he is Owen William. He also has a masked house DJ alias.

His recent work in production was on Cashh’s Daily Duppy for GRM Daily, which hit 1M streams on Spotify alone. Show host Saïna’s debut single, Wrong Love, was his most recent project in production.

Listen to the full episode to hear how Owen is benefiting from using all 3 names in conjunction with each other as separate brands.
