A voice of hope for our struggling youth: Jiggy Yoon

A voice of hope for our struggling youth: Jiggy Yoon

In this episode, Jiggy shares her upbringing in a very traditional Korean family, where her traumatic experiences and emotions were not to be spoken of and where expectations of excellence were of the utmost importance. She talks about the effects that this had on her growing up.  After she moved to the United States, she was practicing her english in an online chat room, and came across the words "gay", "lesbian" and "bisexual" which led her to discovering an identity that she felt connected to. She shares how she bravely told a few friends when she was young and received homophobic responses that cost her most of her friendships. Jiggy shares how she eventually ended up attending Pennsylvania State University, and discovered another set of new words - "vulnerability", "self awareness" and "empathy". It would be her time attending some gen-ed classes that ended up changing the trajectory of her life. It opened up a whole new space that she never knew existed and one that went against everything she'd been taught as a young girl. A space where emotional intelligence set her on a healing journey.

Jiggy is a youth motivational speaker and mental performance coach helping high school and college students increase the longevity of their performance and demand for excellence. Along with her storytelling, Jiggy brings awareness to the importance of mental health and burnout prevention, and teaches practical strategies for students to implement. Jiggy believes that in order to obtain sustainable performance and excellence, we must be both self-disciplined and self-compassionate; both hard working and effectively resting.

I Quit My Job to Take the Bar Exam (and Passed!) featuring Jay Coleman

I Quit My Job to Take the Bar Exam (and Passed!) featuring Jay Coleman

Jay Coleman initially attended law school to become a prosecutor. However after law school, Jay moved to Maryland to work with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Jay’s interest in policy caused him to seek a career in advocacy and he moved back to his home state.

While deciding whether to take the bar exam again, Jay started a business, ColeScript Editing Services.  Through ColeScript, Jay utilizes his love of grammar to edit resumes, papers, write biographies, and offer tutoring services.

Jay decided to take the bar exam one final time with the condition that he would not work and would give his time and energy to preparing for the exam.  While waiting for the exam results, Jay applied for a job as a youth advocate in Covington, Kentucky.

The advocacy job was a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) preferred job.  In this role, Jay works for the interests of children through a manifestation determination hearing.  Jay ensures that schools abide by the individualized education plans (IEP) for students.  With an IEP in place, a school cannot expel students without cause.  While living and working in Kentucky, Jay learned that he passed the Tennessee bar exam.

NOTE:  As of the release of this episode, Jay Coleman is a staff attorney with the Center for Arkansas Legal Services in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Jay represents clients requesting guardianship of family members, predominantly issues with children. Jay also  petitions the court to seal criminal cases, handles landlord/tenant issues, and represents clients who have been denied access to public benefits.

Jay Coleman is licensed in the state of Tennessee and Arkansas.  You may follow Jay Coleman on Instagram @fridayre_esq and follow his editing service company @ColeScript.  Contact Jay Coleman at colescript@gmail.com to request editing services.

    Gangs! A community-wide issue that demands a community-wide response!

    Gangs! A community-wide issue that demands a community-wide response!
This is Part 2 of a 2-part Series. brbr How does one identify if gangs are prevalent within their community? Today, Bob Florez, M.A., Youth Advocate, Program Developer and Counselor returns to discuss what average community members can do. What can schools and municipalities do about gangs? How does a parent increase “protective factors” and decrease “risk factors” for their children? These are some of the questions that will be answered in the next hour! We will look closely at what has worked in the past and allow that to inform the needs of the future. We must make changes necessary to help our youth grow into the adults that they deserve to be within our communities. brbr Our youth are our greatest resource. We are incarcerating young men at an alarming rate today and there is a dramatic increase in female enrollment! We must take action to preserve the future and offer our youth the potential they deserve.
