    Teens and God's Guidance

    Teens and God's Guidance

All this week we’re looking at Paul Tripp’s parenting book, Age of Opportunity, and the five signs that our teenagers have a heart for God. Today, we look at the fourth sign. Tripp says that teens who have a heart for God will be relaxed and open to discussions about spiritual things. We should not expect or accept our teenagers’ being closed and defensive to spiritual things. Paul Tripp says that we should seek to nurture our children to love the Lord and his word. Our kids need to grow up to understand that God’s word speaks to every situation of life, and they should be hungry to be guided and corrected by God’s Word. We want our kids to be humble and open to God’s guidance. They need to know that they need God’s help, and they should seek it. Parents, evaluate your teenager. How open is he or she to talking about spiritual things. Continually pray for your teen. Pray for their hearts and minds. Ask God to give them a hunger and thirst to talk about God and His word.

How Can Our Churches Disciple Kids

How Can Our Churches Disciple Kids

Recently, our friends at Lifeway research offered some very helpful directives for those of us who desire to see our kids grow up to love, follow, and serve Jesus Christ. There are three factors in particular that parents must be aware of that research tells us are present in the churches of those who grow up to embrace a life of Christian discipleship. First, churches who foster an environment of trust and guidance are churches where teenagers feel the freedom to go for help and direction. Teens who grow up in a church like this are less likely to drop out of church and walk away from the faith. Second, churches that provide youth leaders who truly care about their students leave kids less likely to drop out of church and walk away from the faith. Make sure your church is training and equipping strong leaders. And finally, churches where adults reach out to kids, take an interest in them, invest in them, and foster relationships with them are more likely to see kids stick around. Is this what’s happening in your church?

    Youth Sports and Sunday Mornings

    Youth Sports and Sunday Mornings

One of our Research Fellows here at CPYU, Dr. Jason Engle, wrote one of our CPYU Parent Prompts on youth sports and church participation. Jason tells us that for families with young athletes, the pressure to participate in travel and club teams continues to intensify, with parents having to make difficult decisions about whether or not their child will participate on a Sunday morning. Jason offers this advice regarding how youth sports can become an idol: Jesus teaches that, “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. Jesus alone stands as the only worthy object of what our hearts look to as supreme treasure. This should shape the goal of every parent for the heart of their child: to know and treasure Jesus as supreme. We fall into idolatry when we instead set our hearts’ supreme affections on anything other than the One who is worthy of it. Anything that makes high demands of our calendar and our bank account can quickly pull us toward idolatry, including youth sports.

Special Episode: The Cult of Politics - President as Savior: Analyzing Easter Message and Christian Leadership

Special Episode: The Cult of Politics - President as Savior: Analyzing Easter Message and Christian Leadership

On Easter Sunday, Trump shared a message on Truth Social that had Fredy awake all night. Amidst Trump's ongoing legal challenges, Tommy and Fredy engage in a crucial conversation about how some Christian leaders may inadvertently damage the church's reputation by excessively spiritualizing the charges against President Trump and failing to hold him accountable. They also explore the complex interplay between faith and politics.

Is there synchronism at play here?

Does America need Donald Trump to save Christianity?

How should we pray for our current and past civic leaders?

    How to L-O-V-E Hurting Kids

    How to L-O-V-E Hurting Kids

In his book “Help my Kids are Hurting,” my friend Marv Penner offers an acronym to help us think through the skills needed to help wounded kids. The letter L stands for listening – the most fundamental skill needed by anyone working with hurting kids. We must close our mouths and listen intently as they tell their story. O refers to what we offer students. They’ve opened up with us because they believe we have something they need. We must offer hope and the willingness to go deeper with them. V calls us to validate what’s happening in the lives of hurting kids. We must let them know that their pain and feelings are real and legitimate. E reminds us to eliminate immediate dangers including behaviors and relationships, especially if they are on a path to hurting themselves or others. Our culture leaves kids hurting and they desperately need our LOVE.

    Doubt and Certainty

    Doubt and Certainty

In today’s world, our kids are being taught that they can and should make their own decisions about what to believe based on how they feel and what works for them at any given moment in time. Dr. Michael Kruger says that one concerning way that this is evidenced in the church today is that we have now come to believe that inviting questions is more valuable than supplying answers. A growing number of pastors, youth workers, and parents are enlisting this approach with kids, encouraging them to embark on a journey of spiritual self-discovery rather than teaching them that the Bible says much about what is right and wrong. This approach undermines Biblical truth and leads kids to doubt and even dismiss the certainty of Christianity. Our kids need to learn that we all have things that we are certain about. But those certainties need to be built on the foundation of God’s Word. This is where Jesus stood. He said to His Father, “Your word is truth.”
