Steven Spielberg lights up the silver screen in 'West Side Story', a loving remake of the original film (and tribute to the broadway musical, of course) that follows a young criminal's infatuation with a budding girl, and the culture war that's destined to keep them apart. Then, Netflix blows up the traditional western in 'The Harder They Fall', a new film from director Jeymes Samuel that sees two rival gangs facing off in a small-town shootout that's hell-bent on making a name for itself. Kenny and Mike offer their thoughts on the power-packed new western, The Harder They Fall as well as spot and discuss the faith elements reflected in the Netflix film.

Faith Reflected:

The cost revenge exacts in body, mind, and spirit. Also, given the  consuming wages of retribution the purpose behind Christ's, Paul's and other Biblical teaching about, grace and forgiveness and love of neighbor including if not especially one's enemies. 

Matthew 5:38-48; Luke 6:27-36

Jesus teaches that one's retaliation against another is to love, bless, and pray for them, even offer them the other cheek. The reward of showing love and forgiveness even to one's biggest enemies is the peace that comes from acting righteously and pleasing to God. There are no exeptions to forgiving and offering love.

Romans 12:19-21 Paul teaches not to seek revenge upon enemies but to offer them food and drink and love.  Leav revenge and judgement to God.  Responding by love and grace pours hot coals upon their head. One only overcomes evil by love. Revenge allows evil to overcome one. ,

Dat vriend en vijand het er behoorlijk over eens is dat Joaquin Phoenix een stevig potje kan acteren levert weinig discussie op. En die Oscar voor Joker was verdiend. Maar of het ook als film wel zo fabelachtig is allemaal? Deze verkenning van hoe de Batman-schurk is ontstaan is in elk geval duister en indringend. En in korte tijd heeft-ie toch ene plekje in de IMDb top 250 bemachtigd, en best een schare fans verzameld.

Een van die enthousiastelingen is de acteur Chris Tates. Hij is een echt theaterdier, maar toch ook zeker niet vies van het witte doek. Als je hem niet zag in films als Ellis in Glamourland en De groeten van Mike!, dan toch vast wel in Steven Soderberghs meesterwerk Ocean's Twelve. En anders is er nog de rits tv-series waarin hij speelde. Westenwind, Rozengeur en wodka lime, en een bekende premier in Den Uyl en de Affaire Lockheed. "Tuut, tuut, tuut, de groetjes van..."

Hij speelt ook de hoofdrol in STOET, een nieuwe korte film van eerdere podgast Nena Tijsma. Daarin speelt hij Johan, de vader van een personage van Mirjam Mertens, met wie hij samen achter een lijkwagen rijdt met de auto. Er is iets onuitgesprokens tussen de twee, en langzaamaan lopen de spanningen tussen pa en dochter hoog op. STOET gaat op 13 september in première tijdens Go Short Arnhem.

Tijdens het gesprek gaat het ook over de jaren '70-klassieker Rollerball, de parallellen met die andere Oscarwinnende Joker-rol in The Dark Knight en de overeenkomsten tussen Joker in deze film en president Donald Trump.
