    A Do List

    A Do List
In this passage Paul begins to list for us a number of things that the renewed mind will discover are God's will. Why does the Holy Spirit give us lists like this to consider? What should we do with such lists? Paul begins with the basic truth of love. What is hypocritical love? Why are we to avoid it? What are some misconceptions about agape love? What is our tendency regarding our attitude toward evil? How is love within the church to be characterized? What are two ways to look at Paul's command regarding honor? What often happens to our diligence in the things of God? What is the peril of fervency or zeal? What enables us to rejoice in difficult circumstances? What does Paul mean to fellowship with the needs of the saints? (70 min)

June 24 — Contagious Gospel Zeal

June 24 — Contagious Gospel Zeal

The implied we in our passage, communicates that this vision for global mission work was so contagious that there were others who had become partakers in it. So it must be with us! Take time to pray for the preaching of the gospel to all the people groups of the world. But also evaluate your own heart, and answer this simple question: Am I zealous for the gospel to be preached to the ends of the world to such a degree that people around me are catching the same vision and passion?

The Temple [Word Made Flesh 07]

The Temple [Word Made Flesh 07]

Few stories are as complex and perplexing like Jesus clearing the house in the temple. Should Christians see this as something only Jesus does? We clearly are called to embrace Him, but does that mean we follow Him in this kind of zeal? And what does that look like?

    Hebrews 6: Faith and Patience

    Hebrews 6:9-20

If we will enter the rest God has prepared for us, we must continue with faith and patience. Andrew and Edwin dig into the dull, sluggish, lazy approach we are tempted to take with our discipleship, encouraging us to instead grow our earnestness, eagerness, and striving to do our best.

    Paul's Zeal | 1 Corinthians 9:1-15

    Paul's Zeal | 1 Corinthians 9:1-15
In this passage, Paul gives multiple reasons full-time ministers should be supported. Then he declares he is free to deny himself that privilege. Paul did not want anything to interfere with the message of the gospel, so he poured himself out into teaching and working for the sake of the Corinthians. His zeal challenges us to give our all and to let no personal freedom interfere with communicating the message of salvation and growing in Christ.

    What the Fathers Did

    What the Fathers Did

Zeal: what leaders protect and what they perceive their role to be – defending their way of life

Zeal for the Jews from the Old Testament:

    1. The story of Moses in deliverance, the tabernacle, and the giving of the law: one God and the restoration of life as in the Law.
    2. The stories of zeal for God that are told to the children: the story of Phinehas -in Numbers 25 and Psalm 106 as well as Elijah and the prophets of Baal.
    3. Two groups of thought at this time: Hillel and Gamaliel – live and let live; and Shammai who saw violence as a necessary means to protect Gods honor, glory, and presence.  This is to enemies outside as well an contaminates on the inside as the stories of Phinehas and Elijah demonstrate.
    4. History matters as it tells us something about events today.  Yitzhak Rabin, Peres, and Arafat at Oslo accords, and Nobel Peace Prize.  Amir was a zealous Torah student, and is still unrepentant. November 4 1995.
    5. Finally, the Hope of Israel is total deliverance and a turning to the one true creator God.

The parallels between Moses and Jesus show a different reading of the story. You see the correlation to Jesus: in this understanding, the new way is much more faithful to the scriptures! He shows how Jesus is the fulfillment of the messianic promises!  This is how the Jewish religion ought to have been understood! The holy place is the community of believers, and obedience to the Holy Spirit is the law!

Look how the story unfolds: just like Jesus Moses is the baby saved at a time when the fulfillment of the promise was near; came to brothers offering peace, but is rejected; he was mighty in word and deed; he was rejected, but later accepted on the second visitation, just like the outpouring of the Holy Spirit; confirmed by signs and wonders; Moses is also rejected a second time even with a more powerful deliverance, the people turn to idols and end up in exile. So Jesus must suffer before entering glory.

This will launch the end of the Jerusalem narrative and move us into the gospel to the whole world.

The reading is a major change from how those of the day thought about the temple and the law.  Indeed, the fact that Jesus saw himself as the temple instead of a building was considered blasphemy

But Stephen sees the place where heaven interacts with earth in Jesus, and because the Holy Spirit now in dwells those who believe in him, there is a new way of reading the scriptures.  They all speak of Jesus!

And now Stephen is relating these leaders of the people to the leaders who persecuted the prophets, including Moses and all the rest? He accuses them of killing ‘the Hope of Israel’! Hope is not wanting something, it is a a futuristic waiting on the Messiah.

But they saw themselves as being righteous, no wonder their anger burned.

Challenge: where does our background, childhood stories, culture keep us from understanding Jesus as the great victor in our lives, and in the lives of those who are different from us?

Jehovah Sabaoth: The Lord of Hosts [He Shall Be Called 02]

Jehovah Sabaoth: The Lord of Hosts [He Shall Be Called 02]

We are in a sermon series this Advent season on the names of God. How does the Bible talk about God?  What names does He have, the Son given to us on Christmas, who has come to us and will come again?  He is the Lord of hosts which is a reminder that we do not fight alone. He is an invisible general, fighting for us. He isn’t afraid of a human army, and swords and shields and chariots. He’s the lord of hosts! He doesn’t see our battles the way we do. He sees beyond the physical and material. Beyond the human solutions and strategies. And He asks His people to trust Him, that He can do it, even when it looks impossible. Someone fights for us. Do you know that? When you feel overwhelmed by your life. When it feels impossible. Like nobody can make this okay. Do you know God is fighting with you? Do you feel the difference that makes? Someone wins for us. There will be no end to justice and peace when God sends this king. And His victory. Is our victory. The Lord of Hosts becomes human. Jesus. Born in a manger. To defeat our real enemies. And His victory over sin and death is our victory. Somebody wins for us.
