Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

James Gunn brings it home this week with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the 32nd Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. But more importantly, Vol. 3 rounds out what might be Marvel's best trilogy with Gunn out the door to help out DC. Does this latest adventure with the freakin' guardians of the galaxy hit all the right emotional heartbeats? Well, we're here to hash all that out, along with our general thoughts on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise thus far, and we of course end the show with the Rotten Tomatoes Game. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars (deep breath) Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Will Poulter, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Linda Cardellini, Nathan Fillion, and Sylvester Stallone.

Our intro music this week is “Wind Flower” by Toti Cisneros.

    Episode 282: 'House Party' Hopping (1990 -> 2023)

“A nice guy and his playboy buddy host an ill-advised mega-party.” That vague logline is what the original HOUSE PARTY (1990) starring Kid N' Play has in common with the new HOUSE PARTY, starring Jacob Lattimore and Tosin Cole. Well, that and the title. For today’s episode, the core gang digs into a whole comparative analysis of these two movies.

Then, there’s a new round of nominees for the Hall of Excellence.

Avatar: The Way of Water & Favorite Movies of 2022

Avatar: The Way of Water & Favorite Movies of 2022

In the first episode of the AIPT Movies podcast for 2023, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss James Cameron’s bold and visually extravagant sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water! Did Cameron finally win over three people who were underwhelmed by the original? Are your hosts now actually invested in the struggles of tall, blue, CGI aliens? Did Cameron successfully build a bridge over the uncanny valley?

In addition, Alex, Tim, and Matt each discuss their favorite movies of 2022!

You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends!

The AIPT Movies podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris, Tim Gardiner, and Matt Paul, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from three filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Instagram and Twitter @ActionHarris. Matt is a terrific artist that you can find on Instagram @no_wheres_ville. Tim can’t be found on social media because he doesn’t exist. MOVIE DISCUSSION:

    Beyondtherut.com

Guest Jerry Dugan of the Beyond the Rut podcast joins Melvin to discuss James Cameron's latest flick Avatar: The Way of Water, a sequel many years in the making!

    Topics:

    • (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 30-minute interview with Jerry Dugan about his podcast, the difficult experience of podcasting, and his favorite episodes (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)
    • Jerry Dugan shares some of his affinity for James Cameron as a director, and the two discuss what it is they've come to know about his style.
    • Giving just enough plot setup for all the 10-year questions we've had about what an Avatar sequel would be about and saving spoilers for the end of the episode.
    • When Avatar: The Way of Water's initial trailer came out, Melvin was, admittedly, not excited in the least. Now that the movie is out, he can confidently say he loved it!
    • One primary takeaway from Avatar: The Way of Water is how expertly directed the film is, clearly showcasing a confidence in its whimsical, simple-yet-complicated worldbuilding and storytelling.
    • The directorial economy present in every scene of Avatar: The Way of Water far exceeds the inefficiency in virtually every scene from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which Melvin brings up because of some comparison's he's seeing due to each films visual setting. Ultimately, this makes the 192-minute runtime much more bearable.
    • Discussing the state of CGI in the industry, things we dislike, and why Avatar: The Way of Water stands out from the rest.
    • Opening spoilers so we can open predictions for future installments!
    • Sequels are complicated because they need to converse with the previous film's themes, tone, and general experience. We wonder how subsequent features will innovate on all of these things, including its visual technology and connecting with the Pandora section in Disney World (which, if you didn't know, is canon to the film's story).
