What is going on with shipping?

In episode 232, Sal Mercogliano, a former mariner, a teacher and a Youtuber, is the guest. We talk about the global hotspots and how what is going on there impacts shipping.

Sal is passionate about putting today's shipping in a historical context. He started his Youtube channel, What is Going on with Shipping, when EVER GIVEN was stuck in the Suez Canal, and he found it so fun, he got so many people cheering him on, so he decided to take it to the next level.

With more than 180,000 subscribers to his channel, Sal is an influencer in the maritime space. We had an exciting conversation about the Red Sea, the Black Sea, the Suez Canal, and the Panama Canal. We talked about seafarers, mariners, leadership, diversity & inclusion, geopolitics and everything there between.

Hopefully, you will enjoy our conversation as much as we did. Please give us a shoutout on social media, and don't forget to subscribe to both our channels. #everyconversationmatters

    Spearheading wind-assisted propulsion

WindWings project is a commitment to leading the way towards a zero-carbon future while enhancing vessel efficiency. BAR Technologies believe there is more to be done to harness wind power and push shipping into a greener and more efficient era for the shipping industry.

We cannot wait for future newbuildings to help us meet new regulations and CO2 reductions. There is a need also for refitting of the existing fleet. The WindWings installation is part of Berge Bulk’s ambition to become carbon neutral by 2025 and lead the world to a zero-carbon future through safe, efficient, and sustainable shipping.

In addition to become carbon neutral, WindWings is a way to show the general public that the maritime industry is changing and is contributing to the solution by taking on the challenges.

What is your view? Do you believe in sails on the current merchant fleet?

    Hull performance

Shipowners and ship managers are seeking solutions to manage hull performance more effectively. Why is that? It's because they want to make their fleet more sustainable, and they also want to save money. Les effective hull performance > more fuel and more emissions.

What does the "Fit for 55 in 2030 package" mean for the maritime industry?

In episode 225, I had the pleasure of speaking with Vera Tax who is a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism. There are so many new proposals now in the pipeline for the maritime industry, and since Vera has been involved in them all, I took the opportunity to ask about them all.

    • EU Emissions Trading System
    • Fuel infrastructure
    • Renewal Energy Directive
    • European Port Strategy

In addition, Vera is a Champion of Equality in the Transport industry, mainly focusing on women in maritime, so we also discussed that.
