    Michael Wardian’s journey into the running world is somewhat unique for a man who is a multiple time “Ultra Runner of the Year” recipient. Michael was a Division 1 lacrosse player for Michigan State University and had the grand idea of running the Boston Marathon shortly after graduation. However, Michael had never ran competitively before. Naturally this made him unaware that you actually had to qualify for the race. In hopes for qualifying for the race he decided to run the Marine Corps Marathon. In his first marathon EVER, Michael qualified for Boston and ran a 2:54 in just his second competitive race.

    Years later he stands as one of the most decorated ultra runners around the world. He has the fastest average time for an individual who has run seven marathons in seven continents in seven days. He has won the 50km, 50 Miler, and 100km U.S. championship through-out his career.

    Earlier this year he ran the Quarantine Backyard Ultra where he accumulated 262 miles over the course of 63 hours and he did it off of NO SLEEP. He is sponsored by Hoka, T-Mobile and is a coach alongside other elite runners and coaches for Chaski Endurance Collective.

     

    Outside of running he enjoys playing chess and like many of us he plays in multiple fantasy football leagues.

    35. The Best Is Yet To Come With 2016 Olympic Bronze Medalist Clayton Murphy

    It is very difficult to figure out who is going to be great in the sport of running. Sometimes it can be obvious and easy to pick out the kids who could possibly go pro in football and basketball at an early age. Which could often be as early as their early high school years. However, that isn’t quite the case with running. No one really knows how many reps it takes along the spectrum of repetition to get so good that you’d one day become a professional runner.

     

    Today’s guest went from good to great rather quickly once he attended  Akron University for both cross country and track and field. No one knows how long it takes to get great, but we can all look at Clayton Murphy’s journey and see exactly how long it took for him. 

     

    Clayton progressed so quickly within the middle distance races while at Akron that he finished 3rd at both the NCAA Indoor & Outdoor Championships in just his sophomore season in the 800 meter run. During his time at Akron he became a 4 x All-American and a 3 x National Champion (2x 800 meters 1x1500).

     

    In 2015 we would see Clayton win his first Pan-American games in the 800 meter run followed up by his bronze medalist performance in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games in the 800 meter run.

     

    Clayton currently resides in Cleveland, Ohio with his wife Ariana Murphy, who is an olympian herself.

Today’s guest is not only a seasoned vet on the road, track and trail but is also a CEO of a coaching company known as Chaski Endurance Collective. What made the sit down with Tyler Andrews so enjoyable is that he has range when it comes to speaking from the perspective of both an athlete and coach. 

    Tyler’s journey is unique because he did not excel like most world class athletes do early on in their career, particularly in high school. In high school he was an 18:30 5,000 meter runner as a senior. However, as Tyler continued to consistently put in the work he found greater success at Tufts University as he made NCAA D3 Nationals twice as an individual. 

    After graduating with a mechanical engineering degree, Tyler took an opportunity to continue chasing his running goals and moved to Ecuador. While living there, he became exactly what he believed he could become through countless miles and hours of dedication to his craft.

    33. Training For An Unknown Opportunity With Kyle Masterson

    When COVID-19 swept across the world, "CANCELLATION season" began for a lot of people, including Kyle Masterson. This meant that the races he had been training for had been swept away amidst the chaos. 

    While the country and world panicked, Kyle continued to train as if an unknown opportunity was lurking around the corner.

    After months of continued training and dedication to his craft, Kyle was granted an opportunity to show his drive and passion for the sport of running. On July 23rd, Kyle traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in an attempt to break the world record in the 50k that is 2:43.38.

    Kyle was ahead of pace much of the race, but ultimately fell short of the record by roughly 60 seconds. Although he didn't reach his goal he is now the 4th fastest HUMAN BEING ever at that race distance.

    Our featured guest Evan Schwartz has become excellent at taking life's challenges in stride. Years ago Evan was a member of both the Cross Country and Track & Field team for The Ohio State University. Early on in his transition from a high school athlete to collegiate athlete, he experienced a setback with his first big running injury. His resiliency as a distance runner proved true as he was able to bounce back the following season with excellent races. The following season Ohio State experienced a couple of coaching changes bringing about change for Evan as well, leaving him off of the university roster for not being fast enough. Frustrated but determined to continue following his passion, Evan joined the Columbus Running Company team where he began to reveal his true potential as a distance runner.

    Evan has recently seen a change in scenery and is now living in Boulder, Colorado where he is training for the 2020 Olympic Trials in the marathon.

    Our guest Kyle Masterson is the epitome of a story worth telling. Kyle grew up in Northeast Ohio where distance running is considered to be extremely competitive in comparison to other states in the US. Although Kyle was talented in high school, he was often overshadowed by runners who were simply on another level. In pursuit of developing as a distance runner, Kyle chose to take the road less traveled by not going to any one of the numerous universities that would have guaranteed him scholarships to continue his running career. The year following high school he instead chose to walk-on to the most storied running program in the history of collegiate cross country, Adams State University.

     

    On paper Kyle was not close to being considered a varsity runner, but he knew that if he surrounded himself with talented athletes and great coaches he too could become great. So Kyle traveled the 1,700 miles from home in pursuit of a challenge and the with the desire of becoming a story worth telling. Like most collegiate athletes he experienced injuries, setbacks, and moments of frustration. However, through his incredible dedication, consistency, and unwavering faith he was able to develop into one of the country’s best distance runners.

     

    Kyle graduated Adam’s State as a three time All-American and as a member of multiple national championship teams. Kyle currently lives in Colorado with his wife Lauren and is pursuing his passion as professional distance runner for Skechers Performance. Recently Kyle was 1 of 24 Americans who competed at the United States Track & Field Championships in the 10,000 meters in Des Moines, Iowa.
