    • Protecting Online Privacy with ExpressVPNUsing a VPN like ExpressVPN safeguards your online privacy by encrypting and rerouting your internet connection, shielding your browsing history from ISPs and advertisers.

Our online privacy is vulnerable without the use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) like ExpressVPN. Our ISPs can see our browsing history even in incognito mode and sell our data to advertisers. ExpressVPN ensures privacy by rerouting and encrypting internet connections through secure servers. The conversation then shifted to music and the greatest musician of all time. The speaker, Eric Weinstein, chose Jonathan Richmond due to his quote about playing music in adverse conditions, emphasizing the importance of stripping music down to its core. The discussion also touched on the innovation and musicianship of Eddie Van Halen, with a focus on his use of the guitar and his influence on rock music. The speaker also reflected on the emotional impact of music and its ability to connect with us on a deep level, integrating our head, heart, and loins.

    • The Power of Music and Iconic ArtistsIconic artists like Eddie Van Halen and Leonard Cohen evoke strong emotions and provoke deep thought through their music, leaving an indelible mark on generations of fans by embracing the full range of human experience.

Music, particularly the works of iconic artists like Eddie Van Halen and Leonard Cohen, has the power to evoke strong emotions and provoke deep thought. Van Halen's performances were awe-inspiring, embodying both raw masculinity and childlike mischief, leaving an indelible mark on generations of fans. Cohen's music, like "Hallelujah," explores the complexities of human emotion, using musical techniques like bathos to create a sense of tension and release. Both artists, in their unique ways, remind us of the transformative power of art and the importance of embracing the full range of human experience.

    • Musical head fakes: Contrasting lyrics and tunes create unexpected emotionsArtists like Johnny Cash, Nina Simone, and Leonard Cohen use contrasting lyrics and tunes to challenge listeners and evoke deeper meanings in their music.

Music, like literature, can contain elements of deception and complexity. Artists like Johnny Cash, Nina Simone, and Leonard Cohen use contrasting lyrics and tunes to create unexpected emotions and meanings. These musical "head fakes" challenge listeners to reconsider the songs' surface meanings and delve deeper into their underlying messages. Additionally, some songs represent musical discoveries, where the artist is as baffled by the power of their creation as the audience. This concept of the "baffled king" highlights the mysterious and magical nature of music and its ability to evoke profound emotions and thoughts.

    • Balancing Confidence and Humility for SuccessBelieve in yourself while maintaining humility, recognize others' capabilities, and acknowledge inner struggles to achieve great things.

Having a balanced mind with both confidence and humility is crucial for success and effective communication. The speaker admires Kara Swisher's ability to bring out the best in intellectual guests and wishes to improve his own style. He believes that everyone has the potential to achieve great things if they believe in themselves, but maintaining humility is essential to keep the ego in check. The speaker also acknowledges the importance of recognizing others' capabilities and applying it to oneself. He shares his own inner struggles with confidence and self-doubt, and the importance of pushing through these feelings to make things happen. The conversation also touched on the topic of mental health and the importance of acknowledging and addressing the darker aspects of the mind.

    • The connection between creativity, darkness, and mental healthCreative individuals often experience darkness, including suicidal ideation and self-harm, which can stem from various causes and can result in unique contributions to art and science.

There are complex relationships between creativity, darkness, and mental health, with individuals like Leonard Cohen, Odetta, and Eddie Van Halen exemplifying this connection. Suicidal ideation and self-harm, as dark aspects of human experience, share similarities but also have various causes, from brain chemistry to life events and beyond. People can respond to adversity with humor or by creating beauty, even when surrounded by darkness. The connection between genius and madness is intricate, and the relationship between darkness and beauty is a cluster that defies easy explanation. Ultimately, recognizing the existence of both perfection and an inability to attain it can help us understand the human condition and appreciate the unique contributions of creative individuals, whether they're musicians, poets, or scientists.

    • Unexpected sources of talent and geniusTalent and genius can emerge from the most unlikely places and people, challenging societal expectations and defying external limitations.

Talent and genius can come in many forms and from unexpected places. The Russian piano tuner in the story, who seemed gruff and unassuming, turned out to be a virtuoso piano player, surprising the speaker with his skill and expertise. This is reminiscent of the story of Matt Damon in "Good Will Hunting," who gave up a prestigious education to pursue his passion, and of Robin Williams, who used his comedic talents to mask deeper pain and sadness. Talent and genius are not limited to those who attend elite institutions or conform to societal expectations. Instead, they can emerge from the most unlikely places and people, often surprising us with their depth and complexity. The Russian piano tuner, like Matt Damon and Robin Williams, remind us that talent and genius are not limited by external factors and can be found in the most unexpected places.

    • Exploring new sources of growth and innovationThe US may have relied on abundant resources and lack of planning for growth in the past, but new sources of innovation and productivity are needed as growth slows down. We should look beyond the low-hanging fruit and explore new orchards, such as the digital orchard.

The US appeared to be a genius country due to its lack of a plan and the abundance of resources during a period of rapid growth. However, this approach may not be sustainable as growth slows down, and new sources of innovation and productivity may be needed. The speaker suggests that we should look beyond the low-hanging fruit and explore new orchards, such as the digital orchard, to discover new sources of growth and innovation. The speaker expresses optimism that there are still people looking for new sources of innovation, but fears that there may not be enough of them to make a significant impact. The conversation also touched on the idea that depression and sadness are not unique to Americans, and that it's important to appreciate the beauty of life even in difficult times.

    • The importance of free spaces for creativity and innovationExcessive focus on fairness and safety can hinder individual freedom and creativity, leading to a stagnant society. Empowering individuals with tools and resources can foster groundbreaking discoveries and innovations, even with mistakes.

Focusing solely on fairness and safety in systems that aim for growth and discovery can hinder progress and innovation. The speaker argues that providing free spaces for individuals to explore their ideas and talents is crucial for the emergence of genius and creativity. However, these spaces are diminishing due to an excessive focus on fairness and safety, which can stifle individual freedom and creativity. The speaker believes that empowering individuals with the right tools and resources can lead to groundbreaking discoveries and innovations, even if they make mistakes along the way. The loss of such spaces and the excessive focus on fairness and safety can lead to a stagnant society, unable to reach its full potential. The speaker advocates for a balance between fairness and safety and the need for freedom and creativity in order to foster growth and discovery.

    • Empowering Potential LeadersRecognize and support passionate, capable individuals to foster greatness. Healthy competition and technology can help mitigate negative impacts on innovation and progress.

We should empower those who are passionate and capable, rather than focusing on jealousy and rivalry. The speaker emphasizes the importance of recognizing and supporting potential leaders, like Elon Musk, instead of criticizing and envying them. He also highlights the significance of healthy competition and the role it plays in fostering greatness. Furthermore, he expresses concern about the loss of human genius due to the negative impact of trolls, particularly on women, and believes that technology can help mitigate this issue. Overall, the conversation underscores the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages innovation and progress.

    • Understanding Human Behavior and MotivationCreating tech and environments that incentivize positive behavior is crucial, acknowledging human complexity, empathy, understanding, and open-mindedness are key in addressing societal challenges.

The root of many issues, including those on social media platforms like Twitter, lies within human behavior and motivation. While it's important to strive for improvement and to believe in the potential for change, it's also crucial to acknowledge the complexity of human nature. Some individuals may seem beyond reach, but there's always a possibility that they can be influenced to embrace their better angels. The speaker emphasizes the importance of creating technology and environments that incentivize positive behavior. Furthermore, the speaker expresses concern about the current societal climate and believes we're in the midst of a revolution, which may lead to destructive outcomes if not addressed. Ultimately, it's essential to recognize the importance of empathy, understanding, and open-mindedness in navigating these challenges.

    • Disruption of a system leading to chaos and divisionEffective communication and compassion can prevent chaos and division from leading to the emergence of evil forces.

Violence, in its broadest sense, can be seen as the disruption of a system. This includes physical violence as well as metaphorical disruptions. While not all disruptions are negative, there is a risk that chaos and division could lead to the emergence of evil forces. In the context of current events, there is a concern that the uncertainty surrounding the election outcome could lead to widespread violence and the exploitation of this chaos by malevolent individuals. To counteract this, it is crucial for individuals to communicate effectively and compassionately, avoiding trolling and negativity. Ultimately, love and unity must prevail over chaos and division.

    • The impact of language and the importance of earnest discourseBe mindful of language choices and strive for clear, concise communication. Empower younger generations and recognize their potential. Resist censorship and protect unpopular views.

The use of LOL and similar acronyms at the end of sentences can undermine the seriousness and responsibility of the message being conveyed. This was discussed in relation to comedians like Joe Rogan and the potential impact their words can have on history. Another key point made was the observation that there are many talented individuals in the world who are not in their rightful positions, and the need to recognize and empower younger generations. The conversation also touched on the importance of clear and concise communication, and the potential dangers of censorship and destruction of those with unpopular views. The hour is late, but the importance of earnest and meaningful discourse, filled with love and truth, cannot be understated. The Joker and the Thief may have different fates, but we have the power to make a difference and win over the internet.

    • Underestimating the power of an individual or platformEmbracing new ideas and persisting in the face of skepticism or opposition can lead to significant impact.

Underestimating the potential impact and influence of an individual or platform can lead to missed opportunities. This was the case with Joe Rogan and long-form podcasting, which was initially dismissed as uninteresting to the American audience. However, as the power and reach of the medium grew, so did attempts to control and censor it through cancel culture. Despite facing criticism and backlash, Rogan continues to thrive by staying true to himself and inspiring others through his authenticity and kindness. The lesson here is that those who embrace new ideas and persist in the face of skepticism or opposition can ultimately make a significant impact on the world.

    • Joe Rogan's Deal with Spotify and the Threats to IndividualityJoe Rogan's deal with Spotify sparked debates about cancel culture, individuality, and the power of influence. Rogan's popularity and willingness to challenge the system offer hope for positive change in 2021.

Joe Rogan, a comedian with a podcast, stepped into the center of cancel culture by signing a lucrative deal with Spotify, which some view as representing structures that threaten individuality. Rogan's willingness to walk away from the deal if necessary, and his immense popularity and influence, have some believing he won't be easily canceled. Rogan's friend argues that his power and success could make him a target for criticism, but also a potential force for good if he uses his platform to challenge the system. The conversation also touched on the idea that there's a war between good and evil, with the good not always emerging as the clear winner. Despite the concerns, both participants expressed hope that 2021 could bring a positive trajectory for society.

    • Bringing together diverse individuals and creating open platforms for conversationTo address the divisive political climate, focus on uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds and create platforms for open, nuanced conversations. Address root causes like lack of effective leadership and harmful platforms.

To address the current divisive political climate, we need to focus on bringing together smart, talented individuals from diverse backgrounds and opinions, and create platforms that encourage open, nuanced conversations. This requires a shift from the current culture of partisanship and constant inclusion, to a more thoughtful approach that understands the importance of both inclusion and exclusion. Additionally, we need to address the root causes of the problem, such as the lack of effective leadership and the influence of harmful platforms like Twitter and journalism. By empowering individuals to be honest and authentic, we can uncover the good and complex ideas that exist within both political parties and unite people towards a better future.

    • The need for younger voices in power and the rise of tech-savvy leadersThe aging leadership and lack of youth representation in power is a concern. Younger, tech-savvy individuals offer a solution through new platforms. Identify and elevate universal heroes to lead the way in addressing societal issues.

The increasing age of those in power and the lack of representation for younger generations in significant roles is a concerning issue that muddles the conversation and may lead to outdated perspectives. The power shift towards younger, tech-savvy individuals through new platforms like Twitter offers a promising solution. However, the responsibility lies with us to effectively communicate and navigate the changing landscape to ensure our voices are heard. It's crucial to identify and elevate universal heroes, who are universally loved and trusted, to lead the way in addressing critical issues facing society. Elon Musk, Elon Musk, Joe Rogan, and other eloquent and influential figures can serve as examples of charismatic communicators who can inspire and unite us towards positive change.

    • The Power of Influential FiguresInfluential figures inspire and move people towards positive change, providing comfort and meaning during difficult times, and allowing deeper connections.

The power of influential figures lies in their ability to inspire and move large groups of people towards positive change. This can be seen in moments like a Rolling Stones concert or Nelson Mandela's visit to Boston, where people were moved to do good, bad, and different things due to the priming effect of these figures. However, not everyone can take on this role, and some, like Killer Mike, may not fully embrace the responsibility that comes with it. The importance of these figures is that they provide comfort and meaning, especially during difficult times, and they allow us to connect on a deeper level. Eric Weinstein, for example, has built a community through his podcast, The Portal, which moves and comforts people all over the world. However, Weinstein himself is not a fan of the fame that comes with his influence and instead wants to get closer to his audience and understand how his work impacts their lives.

    • Transparency and Authenticity in Monetizing ContentSpeaker values transparency and authenticity in business, emphasizes importance of finding genuine supporters, and acknowledges challenges of balancing wealth, fame, and authenticity.

The speaker values transparency and authenticity in business, especially when it comes to monetizing their content. They have had reservations about setting up a Patreon account due to negative associations with monetary incentives and the fear of being labeled as a "shill" or "grifter." However, they have come to realize that openness about their business dealings can actually strengthen their relationship with their audience. They also emphasized the importance of finding genuine supporters and partners, such as Fitbit and Stephen Kates, who have positively impacted their personal and professional growth. The speaker expressed a desire for financial stability but also acknowledged the challenges of balancing wealth, fame, and authenticity. Lastly, they expressed concern about the negative and meta-violent online environment during the election period and the importance of maintaining a constructive and authentic dialogue with their audience.

    • Focus on ruining the system, not being ruined by itIndividuals with strong communication skills can make a difference, find common ground, and bring people together, despite external forces attempting to limit or silence them.

While external forces may attempt to limit or silence individuals, ultimately, the power lies within the individual's mind. The speaker believes that people should focus on ruining the system rather than being ruined by it. He emphasizes that psychology is not real power, but a tool used to manipulate and affect the mind. The speaker also encourages the importance of finding common ground and drawing a line that ensures a better future without resorting to labeling individuals as "evil" or "incompetent." He shares the belief that individuals, especially those with strong communication skills, have the power to make a difference and bring people together. The speaker also expresses his frustration with the current political climate and the need for a more compassionate and understanding approach.

    • The Strain of Political Discourse and the Importance of Competent LeadersDespite the divisive political climate, it's crucial to support competent, trustworthy leaders who demonstrate courage and commitment to their beliefs, even if their backgrounds and negotiations remain private.

The current political climate is causing significant strain on individuals who engage in discourse surrounding the election. The speaker expresses concern about the integrity of those involved and the potential danger of making informed comments due to the divisive nature of the parties. They argue for the need of competent, trustworthy individuals in leadership roles, even if their backgrounds and negotiations remain private. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of self-credentialed individuals who have demonstrated courage and a commitment to their beliefs. They use the example of Katharine Hepburn as a symbol of someone who defied the status quo and gained respect. The speaker acknowledges the complexity of the situation and the difficulty in choosing between two unfavorable options, but emphasizes the importance of moving beyond the concept of moderation being synonymous with corruption. The overall message is a call for competence, courage, and trustworthiness in leadership, even if it means closing the doors to transparency.

    • Regulating Technology Companies: A Call for ChangeConflicts of interest, silencing voices, and the need for competition are major concerns in regulating technology companies. Individuals have the power to effect change through their actions and understanding root causes. Financial security and future planning are important.

The current system of regulation and governance in technology companies, particularly social media platforms, is flawed and requires a fundamental overhaul. The speakers in the discussion expressed concerns about conflicts of interest, the power of these platforms to silence voices, and the need for competition. They also touched upon the idea that individuals have the power to change things through their words and actions, and the importance of understanding the root causes of the problems, which lie not only in the technology but also in human behavior. The discussion also touched upon the importance of having enough financial security to have the freedom to express one's views and make a difference. Future planning was mentioned, including the possibility of creating a competitor to Twitter and investing in innovative projects. The conversation also included a mention of Roger Penrose, who recently won the Nobel Prize for Physics.

    • Roger Penrose's profound impact on mathematics and physicsRenowned mathematician and physicist Roger Penrose, known for his inventiveness and breakthroughs, was recognized with a Nobel Prize for his exceptional contributions despite past omissions in science awards.

Roger Penrose, a renowned mathematician and physicist, had a profound impact on the speaker's life and the world of mathematics and physics. Penrose is in the same league as esteemed figures like Feynman, Einstein, Dirac, and Whitten. His class represents the pinnacle of human intellectual achievement. Penrose's career was marked by inventiveness and frustration, with some significant breakthroughs but not the same level of recognition as others. The Nobel Prize, which is often criticized for distorting what truly matters, may have bent its rules to award Penrose in recognition of his exceptional contributions. It's important to acknowledge past omissions, such as those of Emmy Noether, Chien-Shiung Wu, and Doug Prasher, and strive for greater inclusivity in science.

    • Celebrating Scientific Superstars and Ethical ConsiderationsRecognize and celebrate scientific achievements, but remain cautious of ethical concerns. Prevent destructive behaviors by addressing financial support, tax advice, and potential involvement with minors.

The importance of recognizing and celebrating scientific superstars, while being cautious about ethical considerations, is crucial for the advancement of scientific fields. The discussion touched upon the impact of Jeffrey Epstein on MIT and the scientific community, raising questions about the role of evil individuals versus the system in enabling such destructive behaviors. The conversation also highlighted the complexity of the Epstein case, involving various aspects such as financial support for scientists, tax advice, and potential involvement with minors. Ultimately, the focus should be on preventing such incidents in the future and considering heroic actions to take if faced with similar situations.

    • The Complexity of Conspiracy Theories and the Epstein CaseRecognize the importance of investigating potential wrongdoing, even when it involves powerful individuals or institutions, while approaching all topics with an open and logical mind.

The scale and complexity of certain situations, such as the involvement of institutions and powerful individuals in scandals like the Jeffrey Epstein case, can lead to a culture of silence and a reluctance to label such situations as conspiracies. This reluctance can be an effective tool for those involved in wrongdoing to avoid investigation and accountability. However, it's important to recognize that there are responsible ways to explore conspiracy theories and that the absence of consistency or identical results in certain variables between widely separated populations is a natural occurrence. It's crucial to approach all topics, including conspiracy theories, with an open and logical mind. The Epstein case serves as a reminder of the importance of investigating potential wrongdoing, even when it involves powerful individuals or institutions, and the potential consequences of a culture that shuns the label of conspiracy theory.

    • Convincing the world of a conspiracy's validity is crucialThe pursuit of scientific truth requires unwavering commitment, even if it means challenging societal norms or uncovering dark conspiracies.

The ability to convincingly carry out a conspiracy relies on first convincing the world of its validity. This concept was highlighted in the film "1971" about the Citizens' Committee to Investigate the FBI, which unearthed a conspiracy within the federal government. The current societal trend of being timid and neglecting historical conspiracies was brought up in relation to Jeff Epstein, who some believe was a constructed figure. The loss of federal funding for scientific research in the 1970s led researchers to seek alternative sources, making Jeff Epstein a savior for science. However, this came at a cost as universities became more focused on securing funding, leading some to compromise their moral commitments to science. The call to action is to find a worthy battle to fight for in science, with the potential for it being worth dying for, as science is one of the greatest things worth fighting for.

    • Exploring the impossible for a better futureDespite skepticism, pursuing seemingly impossible ideas can lead to significant advancements for a better future. Perseverance, innovation, and the pursuit of knowledge are essential.

We're facing a critical issue with the potential threat of a virus, and everyone with a viable plan to prevent a catastrophic future should work on it. Elon Musk's space exploration plans, while seemingly unconventional, are an example of this fight. The speaker acknowledges the skepticism but believes in the importance of pursuing seemingly impossible or childish ideas that might have a chance of making a difference. The speaker also reflects on the rapid advancements in science and technology throughout history and the potential for even greater discoveries. However, he admits that the current state of theoretical physics, with its complex language and entrenched perceptions, makes it challenging for outsiders to contribute effectively. He also expresses his belief that the renormalization revolution in physics, while important, was misinterpreted, leading to a lack of exploration beyond effective theories. In essence, the speaker emphasizes the importance of perseverance, innovation, and the pursuit of knowledge, even in the face of skepticism and adversity.

    • Innovation and communication revitalize communitiesInnovation through new mediums and expressing gratitude can inspire and strengthen communities, including the physics community

Innovation and communication are key to re-energizing communities, including the physics community. The podcast medium, like Tartaglia's solution of the cubic, can open up new possibilities and inspire new ideas. Gratitude for the present, whether it's found in personal relationships, small joys, or intellectual collaborations, can provide strength and motivation in challenging times. The speaker expresses gratitude for his experiences, including falling in love with an intellectual collaborator, and looks forward to the future, which could bring both challenges and opportunities.

    • Embracing the challenges of intellectual work and open dialogueEric Weinstein remains dedicated to sharing ideas and continuing his work in the intellectual sphere, emphasizing the importance of diverse platforms and voices, and resisting efforts to silence or destroy reputations.

Eric Weinstein, the host of this podcast, is deeply committed to continuing his work in the intellectual sphere, despite the challenges and risks involved. He expressed his gratitude for the existence and impact of the podcast, and emphasized his desire to ensure that important discussions and ideas continue to be shared with audiences. Weinstein also spoke about the importance of maintaining a diverse range of platforms and voices, and the need to resist efforts to silence or destroy reputations as a means of controlling the narrative. He acknowledged the potential danger of the current political climate and the importance of staying engaged, even if it means putting himself in the line of fire. Overall, Weinstein's message was one of resilience, determination, and a commitment to the value of open dialogue and the exchange of ideas.

    • Feeling broken or disconnected during joyful momentsIt's okay to feel sadness or emptiness during supposedly happy times, and acknowledging these emotions can help us better understand ourselves and connect with others.

That life can be filled with pain and hardship, and sometimes we may feel disconnected or broken, even during moments that are supposed to be joyful or celebratory. The quote "It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah" emphasizes this idea, suggesting that even in times of supposed spiritual or emotional triumph, we may still feel a deep sense of sadness or emptiness. It's important to acknowledge and validate these feelings, rather than trying to force ourselves to feel happy or whole when we're not. By recognizing the complexity and nuance of human emotions, we can better understand ourselves and connect with others. So, the next time you're feeling broken or disconnected, remember that it's okay to feel that way, and that you're not alone in your struggles.

Episode 41, Part 2: Marla Mervis-Hartmann talks about creating Love Your Body Love Yourself, and offers thoughts on the road to recovery
In the second part of this episode, Marla Mervis-Hartmann -- founder and creator of the "Love Your Body Love Yourself" speaking series, workshops, and coaching programs -- shares how she helps clients through their journeys to learning to love their bodies. She looks beyond low self-esteem to dig deep with clients, helping them tap into their fears, childhood experiences and traumas, and their deep-seated feelings about themselves.

Marla also addresses the pressures people feel from social media and other cultural influences and how they use those pressures to justify disordered behaviors. At the end of the conversation, Marla provides guidance for people who are struggling to find a way out of body hatred and unsustainable behaviors.

    Sam Gardel

    Sam Gardel

Sam Gardel is an Electrician from Brisbane and one-time back-rower for the Italian Azzurri during the 2013 Rugby league world cup. Gardy’s story is a compelling one and one that many young trade business owners would be able to relate to. As a young electrician, Sam had the opportunity to have a crack at a football career, however not believing that his heart was fully in it, made the choice to focus on growing his prospering electrical business. However, after investing heavily into his team and business, everything was pulled out from under him leaving him in financial distress.

In the podcast, Sam opens up to us about what happened at the time that his first business came crashing down, and the road he took in rebuilding what he had started. We chat about the hard work and sacrifices made to get back up on his feet, and the challenges that he faced during that process including turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms to blow of steam, justified by the long hours he was working. Within this story is also the individual Journey that Sam has been on, putting in the work to take better care of his mind and body which has not only had a positive impact on his business, but as the leader in his own business, has flowed on through his team as well.

This is an awesome yarn about the power of leading by example, with a couple of stories about school boy sport and how he ended up running on for Italy.
