#183 Why Woo Woo works with Dr David Hamilton

    enFebruary 08, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Exploring the power of the mind and emotions in improving healthExploring woo woo practices like visualization, positive consultations, and Reiki can lead to remarkable improvements in mental and physical health. The placebo effect and the power of the mind are backed by scientific evidence.

The power of the mind and emotions in improving mental and physical health is a compelling concept, often referred to as "woo woo" practices. Dr. Rupi, the host of the Doctor's Kitchen podcast, shares her personal experience of writing late into the night and finding that taking action and visualizing positive outcomes can lead to remarkable improvements. She welcomes skepticism but encourages an open mind, as she explores the mechanisms behind the placebo effect with her guest, Dr. David Hamilton. Woo woo practices include concepts like crystals, energy biofields, visualization, and the law of attraction. In the podcast, they discuss the placebo effect, positive and pessimistic consultations, visualization and the immune system, nature and responses to pain, and Reiki and emotional contagion. While these topics may seem unconventional, Dr. Rupi emphasizes the importance of considering the evidence and research behind these practices. If you're new to this topic, Dr. Rupi recommends reading the book "Why WOO WOO Works" for a deeper understanding. She also encourages listeners to sign up for her newsletter for weekly recipe, listening, and reading recommendations. Overall, this conversation highlights the potential benefits of exploring alternative practices and the power of the mind in improving health and wellbeing.

    • Two experiences shaped our speaker's interest in unconventional healingDiscovering the power of positive affirmations and meditation for their mother, and observing the placebo effect during PhD research ignited our speaker's curiosity about spiritual and alternative healing methods.

Our speaker's interest in unconventional healing modalities, particularly those related to spirituality, mysticism, and alternative medicine, was sparked by two distinct experiences. The first was when they discovered a book on positive affirmations and meditation at a young age, which helped their mother cope with postnatal depression. The second was during their PhD research at AstraZeneca, where they were fascinated by the way the placebo effect could influence brain chemistry, leading them to explore the mind-body connection further. These experiences shaped their appreciation for the scientific and spiritual aspects of the healing process.

    • Placebo Effect's Impact Beyond Pain ReliefThe placebo effect is a powerful tool in healthcare, influencing various health conditions beyond pain relief, including Parkinson's disease, depression, and anxiety. It can even replace certain medications, but understanding its limitations and optimal use is crucial for effective patient care.

The placebo effect is a real phenomenon with significant impact on various health conditions beyond just pain relief. It's not a mere nuisance but an underutilized tool with immense potential for improving patients' lives. The placebo effect has been observed in conditions like Parkinson's disease, depression, and anxiety. Research, such as the study led by Professor Fabrizio Benedetti at the University of Turin, shows that placebo can even replace the need for certain medications. However, it's essential to understand the limitations of the placebo effect and not to misrepresent its capabilities. Additionally, factors like consultation styles between healthcare providers can significantly influence the placebo effect's outcome. The challenge lies in finding the right balance between utilizing the placebo effect and traditional medical treatments for optimal patient care.

    • The Complexity of the Placebo EffectEmpathetic doctor interactions, reassurance, and healthier lifestyles can all contribute to the placebo effect, making it a complex interplay of various factors influencing health outcomes.

The placebo effect is not a clear-cut concept with a definitive line, but rather a complex interplay of various factors that can influence health outcomes. These factors include the consultation style and empathy of doctors, with high empathy leading to increased natural killer cells, reassurance, and encouragement of healthier lifestyles. The placebo effect encompasses not just the use of placebos as inactive treatments, but also elements such as visualization, affirmations, positive energy, and the niceties of consultation practices. The empathetic approach is significant in healing and can make it challenging to test interventions in a clear-cut manner, as compared to traditional randomized controlled trials. However, the importance of empathy and reassurance in healthcare is well-researched and undeniable.

    • The Healing Power of Multiple Active IngredientsRecognizing empathy, setting, and nature's role in healing can significantly impact treatment effectiveness.

When it comes to understanding the effectiveness of treatments, whether traditional or modern medicine, it's essential to recognize that there are multiple "active ingredients" at play. The active ingredient, as traditionally understood, is the chemical substance in a medication that produces a therapeutic effect. However, the speaker emphasizes that factors like empathy, setting, and even the presence of plants in a room can significantly impact the healing process. These subtle yet potent influences become more crucial when dealing with therapies that last longer than a brief consultation. Research shows that even something as simple as looking at a park instead of a brick wall during a medical procedure can lead to better pain response and faster recovery. This affinity to nature is believed to be ingrained in us over eons. By acknowledging and incorporating these various active ingredients, we can create a more holistic approach to healthcare, recognizing that the mind-body connection plays a significant role in the healing process.

    • The correlation between nature and relaxationExposure to natural environments can help reduce stress, improve mood, cognitive function, and aid in recovery from illnesses.

Our ancient ancestors lived in natural environments that kept their nervous systems relaxed most of the time. This correlation between the environment and nervous system state has continued to the present day, so that even seeing or hearing natural elements like trees, grass, blue sky, birdsong, and crickets can help modern humans relax. This effect is due in part to the fact that much of nature is fractal, meaning it exhibits repeating patterns that our brains and nervous systems have evolved to recognize as natural. Modern humans, on the other hand, are constantly stimulated and stressed, leading to a spiked nervous system. Studies have shown that exposure to natural environments can help hospital patients recover faster and even improve mood and cognitive function. Therefore, incorporating nature into our daily lives, even in small ways, can have significant benefits for our overall well-being.

    • Experiencing nature enhances cognitive abilities, improves mood, and boosts immune systemReal experiences in nature can enhance cognitive abilities, improve mood, and even boost the immune system by recognizing the inherent fractal components and calming effects of nature.

Our connection to nature has a profound impact on our wellbeing. Real experiences in nature enhance our cognitive abilities, improve our mood, and even boost our immune system. The human nervous system reacts better to real, natural environments because our brains recognize the inherent fractal components found in nature. Studies have shown that exposure to urban environments can hinder cognitive abilities, while exposure to natural environments can enhance them. Additionally, the sounds of nature can have a calming effect, slowing down our bodies and minds. The Lincolnshire NHS Hospital study showed that visualization techniques, where patients imagined their immune system attacking cancer cells, could significantly heighten their immune response. Our brains may not distinguish between real and imaginary experiences, making our thoughts and imaginations powerful tools for promoting health and healing.

    • The power of imagination: Real or imagined experiences have similar effects on the brainImagining experiences can lead to identical brain changes as the real ones, enhancing various aspects of our lives, from appetite and muscle growth to immune system response and goal manifestation.

The power of imagination is more significant than we may realize. Studies have shown that our brain doesn't distinguish much between real and imagined experiences, leading to identical changes in the brain. For instance, people who imagined playing piano notes had the same brain changes as those who actually played them. Similarly, imagining eating cubes of cheese led to the same impact on appetite as actually eating them. Other research even suggests that visualizing working out at the gym can help people get physically stronger. Furthermore, the immune system seems to respond to visualization as well. A study showed that people who visualized increasing secretory immunoglobulin A (SIGA) in their saliva actually had more of it than those who just did relaxation techniques. These findings suggest that visualization can be an effective additional practice to enhance the impact of mainstream treatments, rather than a replacement. The law of attraction, which involves focusing one's attention and taking actions towards desired goals, aligns with this idea. For example, visualizing David Beckham's winning goals or Sally Gunnar's successful races, combined with taking action, can lead to manifesting those goals. Overall, the power of imagination and visualization should not be underestimated, and can be a valuable tool in improving various aspects of our lives.

    • Connecting consciousness to the physical worldVisualize, take action, and maintain emotional connection to increase chances of manifesting desires

The law of attraction is not just about visualization and meditation, but also about taking physical action and maintaining a strong connection to what you're trying to manifest. Research suggests that consciousness may not be solely produced by the brain, but that the brain and the world around us may be interconnected, and people with certain frontal lobe damage have shown the ability to subtly influence their physical environment through feelings of connection. This connection is an essential ingredient in manifesting our desires, as seen in studies on prayer, ESP, and telepathy. By combining visualization, physical action, and emotional connection, we can increase our chances of attracting what we truly desire.

    • The power of focus and the law of attractionFocusing on our goals and desires, rather than what we lack, can increase their likelihood of manifestation. Practices like Reiki, which have shown to be effective for stress reduction and relaxation, should be further explored and integrated into personal and healthcare settings.

Our focus plays a significant role in shaping our experiences. The speaker shared her personal experience of writing a book while working full-time, holding a vague visual of her goal despite the challenges. She also emphasized the importance of focusing on what we have and what we want, rather than what we lack. The speaker also touched upon the concept of the law of attraction, suggesting that giving more attention to what we desire can increase the likelihood of encountering it in our lives. Furthermore, the speaker expressed her belief that practices like Reiki, which are often dismissed, should be more mainstream and accepted due to the existing body of research supporting their effectiveness. Reiki, an energy healing technique, originated in Japan and has been used for stress reduction and relaxation. Despite its widespread use and positive feedback from individuals, it is often met with skepticism within the scientific community. The speaker encouraged further exploration and integration of such practices into both personal and healthcare settings.

    • Exploring the Healing Power of ReikiReiki, an ancient practice, reduces pain, anxiety, and depression, and improves quality of life. Studies show significant pain reduction in patients receiving Reiki, but more rigorous trials are needed for validation.

Reiki, a healing practice founded over a century ago, has gained scientific recognition for its effectiveness in reducing pain, anxiety, depression, and improving quality of life. Originally developed by Mikayo Yousui during a meditative retreat, Reiki involves a practitioner placing their hands on or above a person to transfer energy. Reiki's profound effects have led to its increasing acceptance in hospitals, with studies like the one at Bryn Mawr Hospital showing significant pain reduction in patients who received Reiki compared to those who did not. However, more rigorous scientific studies, such as randomized controlled trials, are needed to further validate Reiki's benefits. Despite its growing acceptance, skepticism remains due to its classification as a biofield energy therapy, which some may view as "woo woo." To bridge the gap, it's essential to approach the topic with empathy and understanding, acknowledging concerns about potential masking of serious conditions. By introducing scientific evidence and the term "biofield," we can foster a more open-minded conversation about this alternative therapy.

    • Exploring the connection between healer and patient's biofieldsBiofield therapies like Reiki interact with the body's energy fields to promote healing and relaxation, potentially influencing the nervous system and optimizing self-healing mechanisms.

Biofields are energy fields generated by biological processes, and biofield therapies aim to interact with these fields to promote healing and relaxation. The belief is that there's a correlation between the healer's biofield and the patient's biofield, which may help to calm the nervous system and optimize the body's healing systems. Biofield therapies, such as Reiki, don't claim to cure diseases but can contribute to a more favorable environment for the body to heal itself. This concept is similar to the new understanding of pain as a perception in the brain that can be influenced by cognitive factors and therapies like cognitive-behavioral therapy.

    • Love and energy healing: More than just physical mechanismsLove and energy healing practices have observable effects on the body and mind, but their mechanisms are not fully understood by science

Love and energy healing, such as Reiki, may not be fully explainable through current scientific methodology, but they have observable physical and emotional effects. Love increases heart rate, blood pressure, and causes vasodilation, among other things, but it cannot be fully described through these physical mechanisms alone. Love is an energy and a transfer that is cognitive, environmental, and has other unexplained aspects. Similarly, Reiki and other energy healing practices have observable effects on the body and mind, possibly due to the interaction between the practitioner's empathy, love, and compassion and the biofield of the person receiving the treatment. The science behind the how this works is not yet fully understood. Another analogy brought up in the discussion is the way birds use the Earth's magnetic field for navigation, which was not well understood until recently. This lends itself to a conversation about crystals, which some people believe have healing properties, even if the scientific understanding of how they work is limited. The speaker encourages an open-minded approach to such practices, as they may have positive effects even if their mechanisms are not yet fully understood by science.

    • Birds Navigate Using Earth's Magnetic FieldBirds use magnetite and cryptochrome to sense magnetic fields for navigation, while humans have magnetite in our brains and may also have magnetic sensitivity, but not to the same extent as birds.

Birds, like humans, have the ability to sense and navigate using the Earth's magnetic field. This is facilitated by a mineral called magnetite in birds and a pigment called cryptochrome in their retinas, which humans lack. Birds use this magnetic information, along with other cues, to fly long distances and return to the same location season after season. Humans also have magnetite in our brains, and recent research suggests that our brains may be sensitive to magnetic fields as well, although we don't use this ability in the same way as birds. This phenomenon, once dismissed as "woo woo," is now recognized as a valid area of scientific investigation. It's fascinating to consider the ways in which animals and humans are connected to the natural world in ways that are only now being understood.

    • Understanding the Variety of Perceptual AbilitiesHumans and other animals perceive the world differently due to unique sensory abilities. For example, dogs see colors differently than humans and some insects can interact with magnetic fields.

Humans have the ability to detect magnetic fields through magnetite in our brains, but we have learned to rely on other senses for navigation and have largely forgotten this ability. Our perception of the world is dependent on our individual sensory abilities, and while humans are trichromats with three types of color receptors, other animals like dogs have different visual systems that allow them to see a different representation of reality. For instance, dogs see grass as beige and a rainbow as gray, dark blue, light blue, and beige. Some species, like foraging insects, have more than three types of color receptors and can see ultraviolet and even interact with the Earth's magnetic field. No single species sees the world correctly, as we all perceive a representation of reality based on our unique sensory abilities. This discussion highlights the importance of being intuitive and mindful of our surroundings, as well as the vast diversity of perceptual abilities in the natural world.

    • Expanding Perceptual Limits with NeuroplasticityNeuroplasticity allows us to expand our perceptual abilities through training. Unconventional methods, like integrating color processing into mirror neurons, could help individuals on the autism spectrum better understand emotions.

Our perceptual abilities have limits, but the brain's neuroplasticity allows us to expand those limits through training. Ramakandran's study with an autistic child demonstrated this by integrating a color process region into the mirror neuron system, enabling the child to see emotional auras around people. This concept, though unconventional, could potentially help individuals on the autism spectrum better understand emotions. Additionally, practicing kindness and loving-kindness meditation can help create a positive mental environment and counteract negative energy or emotional contagion.

    • Understanding Emotional Contagion through Mirror NeuronsMirror neurons cause us to feel others' emotions and can lead to emotional contagion. To counteract this, focus on positive emotions and become a 'projector' of kindness.

Our emotions and facial expressions are interconnected through a system in the brain called mirror neurons. These neurons mirror the expressions we see in others, leading to a phenomenon called emotional contagion. This means that if we are surrounded by angry or sad faces, for example, we are more likely to feel the same way, even if we don't understand why. However, we can change this by taking steps to improve our own emotional state, becoming a "projector" who spreads positive emotions instead of absorbing negative ones. This not only benefits us but also affects others, contributing to the contagious nature of kindness. Additionally, doing more of what makes us feel good on the inside can lead to increased effectiveness and productivity on the outside. So, focus on activities and practices that bring meaning and joy to your life, even if they require sacrificing time or energy in other areas.

Does It Matter If It's "Only Psychological"?

Does It Matter If It's "Only Psychological"?

Sometimes we dismiss things as being "only our imagination" or "only psychological." For example, "My back feels better after that mediation, but it's probably only psychological."

My question is, if it worked, does it matter if it's "only psychological?" Or is the reality that our minds and our energy are just that powerful? ;)

AJ’s own experience of a surprising resolution to her own health condition led her to seek Reiki, energy healing, for Lola, a rescued mutt who was carrying around a truckload of pain and trauma.

Forms of energy healing such as Reiki have been practiced by many different cultures around the world for over 2500 years! In this episode, AJ talks to two guests who are masters in Reiki. Reiki is a modality of healing that has been in its present form for about 100 years. It involves the practitioner acting as a conduit and working with the energy fields around the body to guide “universal energy” from the practitioner’s palms to the client. People use it for anxiety, heart disease, and other issues. It can also be used effectively with animals. Guests for Episode 21 include Laurie Barshay and Kris Denning of Healthy to the Soul.

Reiki hasn’t been clearly shown to be effective for any health-related purpose. It has been studied for a variety of conditions, including pain, anxiety, and depression, but most of the research has not been of high quality, and the results have been inconsistent.
