    Podcast Summary

    • Dr. Chi Chi Echocrouch's innovative approach to health inequalitiesDr. Echocrouch leads the AT Beacon project, bringing health and well-being resources to community centers and prescribing fruit and vegetables to those in need.

Learning from this episode of Doctor's Kitchen podcast is the innovative approach of Dr. Chi Chi Echocrouch, a GP in London, in addressing health inequalities in the community. She is not only a medical professional but also an advocate for the power of food and lifestyle as medicine. Dr. Echocrouch is leading the AT Beacon project, which operates out of various community centers like health and well-being hubs, social supermarkets, barbershops, and churches, to help vulnerable people live healthier lives. She is particularly passionate about the association with the Alexandra Rose project, which prescribes fruit and vegetables to those in need. Dr. Echocrouch's approach to medicine involves getting out into the community, walking the streets, and turning the traditional model of patients coming to see her on its head. The buzz and energy at the health hub they visited during the recording are a testament to the impact of her work. The Doctor's Kitchen podcast is committed to spreading the conversation about the potential of medics and health professionals prescribing fruit and vegetables for free, inspired by the pilot project that Dr. Echocrouch is part of. The podcast offers various resources like the Doctor's Kitchen app, recipes tailored to health needs, and an email newsletter to help people make informed choices about their health.

    • Affordable essentials vs accessible healthy foodQuince provides affordable, ethical travel essentials and Ascension Trust Beacon Project ensures accessible, healthy food options in their communities

Quince offers high-quality, jet-setting essentials at affordable prices, while ensuring ethical and safe manufacturing practices. Meanwhile, in Angel Town, London, the Ascension Trust Beacon Project focuses on providing convenient access to healthy fruits and vegetables for those with health conditions, particularly those struggling with hypertension, by partnering with local traders and delivering prescriptions. Both Quince and the Ascension Trust Beacon Project aim to address the needs of their respective communities, whether it's through affordable, stylish travel essentials or accessible, healthy food options.

    • Understanding patients' home environments and economic situationsDoctors can make a bigger impact on patients' lives by focusing on community health and addressing economic challenges that affect access to healthcare and proper nutrition.

Being a doctor involves more than just prescribing medication in a clinical setting. Dr. A, who started as a pediatric doctor and now practices as a GP, shared how his experiences and personal health issues led him to focus on community health and prescribing fruits and vegetables. He emphasized the importance of understanding patients' home environments and economic situations to effectively treat them. Dr. A's work in underprivileged countries and his own health journey showed him the far-reaching impact of nutrition and lifestyle on recovery and overall well-being. He also highlighted the challenges some patients face in accessing healthcare due to economic factors and irregular work schedules. By focusing on community health and addressing these challenges, doctors can make a more significant impact on their patients' lives.

    • Engaging communities in unexpected placesHealthcare professionals can reach underserved individuals by providing services in community spaces like barbershops and pharmacies, building trust and encouraging open conversations about health.

Providing healthcare access requires thinking creatively and removing barriers. Dr. Chi Chi's innovative approach to healthcare involves engaging communities where they are, such as in barbershops and local pharmacies. By doing so, she's able to reach individuals who might not otherwise seek medical help, addressing various health concerns beyond just hypertension. This approach builds trust and encourages open conversations about overall health and wellbeing. By being present and accessible, healthcare professionals can make a significant impact and potentially prevent serious health issues. This approach is not just about pushing policies but about making healthcare more inclusive and convenient for all.

    • Highlighting the importance of accessible healthcare solutionsAffordable and convenient healthcare options, like weekly fruit and vegetable vouchers, are crucial for individuals facing financial and time constraints to prioritize their health and prevent serious complications.

The pandemic has highlighted the importance of accessible and flexible healthcare solutions for individuals facing financial and time constraints. The conversation emphasized the significant number of undiagnosed health issues, such as high blood pressure, which could lead to serious health complications and high healthcare costs if left untreated. The need for affordable and convenient solutions, like weekly fruit and vegetable vouchers, was emphasized to ensure individuals can prioritize their health. Engaging with communities and understanding their unique challenges is crucial to effectively implementing policies and initiatives. The impact of such policies can be profound, as demonstrated by the success of the Social Supermarket model, which not only provides access to healthy food but also offers opportunities for mental health support and regular health checks. Ultimately, a compassionate and community-focused approach is essential to addressing the complex health needs of individuals and families.

    • Effective community engagement crucial for health disparitiesUnderstanding unique challenges, speaking community language, and addressing concerns inspires trust and improves access to healthcare services.

Effective community engagement is crucial in addressing health disparities and increasing access to healthcare services. Dr. Adesanya, who is vice chair of Street Pastors and a GP appraiser, shared how the organization has grown from a local initiative in the UK to a global one with over 20,000 volunteers and 240 sites. He emphasized the importance of understanding the unique challenges and needs of diverse communities, including language barriers and cultural differences. Dr. Adesanya's personal experience growing up in South London inspired him to become a doctor and engage with his community during the COVID-19 pandemic. He lost several family members to the virus and saw firsthand the mistrust and fear that prevented some individuals from getting vaccinated. By speaking the language of the communities and addressing their concerns, Dr. Adesanya and Street Pastors have been able to inspire trust and improve access to healthcare services. Empathy, understanding, and community engagement are essential in overcoming health disparities and ensuring equitable access to healthcare.

    • Addressing social determinants of health through community engagementHealthcare professionals can make a bigger impact by recognizing the importance of community connections, engaging with local leaders, and adopting a holistic approach to healthcare.

During the pandemic, it became clear that the role of healthcare professionals is not limited to medical treatment. Instead, it's essential to address the social determinants of health, such as housing, food access, and community connections. The speaker emphasized the importance of engaging community leaders, including religious leaders and local influencers, to create trust and facilitate health interventions. By recognizing that only 5% of a doctor's impact comes from medical treatment, and the rest comes from community engagement, we can start to make a more significant impact on people's lives. To replicate this approach, healthcare professionals should begin by recognizing the importance of community connections, engaging with local leaders, and adopting a more holistic approach to healthcare. This can be achieved by setting up hubs in trusted community spaces, such as churches, mosques, or barbershops, and fostering open conversations about health and wellbeing.

    • Engaging the 80% or 90% of PatientsTo make a meaningful impact, healthcare professionals need to reach out to underserved populations, encourage preventative care, network and collaborate, and think creatively to deliver healthcare differently.

Healthcare professionals need to innovate and think differently to make a meaningful impact on their communities. The speaker, who has a strong background in the healthcare industry, emphasizes the importance of addressing the needs of the 80% or 90% of patients who don't regularly visit their doctors. This can be achieved by reaching out to young people and encouraging preventative care. The speaker also highlights the importance of networking and collaboration among healthcare professionals to learn from each other and share best practices. They also mention their personal experiences of working with a diverse team of professionals and community members to make a difference in their community. The speaker's passion for lifestyle medicine and their interest in attending conferences and doing research in this area further illustrate their commitment to making a difference in healthcare. Overall, the speaker encourages listeners to look at what's in their hands, engage with their communities, and think creatively to deliver healthcare differently.

    • Collaboration and community engagement improve mental healthCollaborative initiatives like the fruit and vegetable prescription scheme can significantly improve mental health and overall wellbeing by encouraging individuals to seek help and prioritize their health, fostering a sense of ownership and pride, and strengthening community connections.

Collaboration and community engagement are key to improving mental health and overall wellbeing. Our mental health outreach worker, with her extensive experience as a community psychiatric nurse, works alongside general practitioners to encourage individuals to seek help and prioritize their health. The fruit and vegetable prescription scheme is one such initiative that has had a significant impact on participants, as seen in the testimonies of those who have experienced improved health and a sense of ownership and pride in the project. The scheme should be made available nationwide to continue making a difference in people's lives. The qualitative feedback from participants, such as the woman who proudly shared her story and encouraged others to engage with the project, highlights the importance of these initiatives in improving health outcomes and community connections.

    • Holistic Approach to HealthcareDiscussed importance of supporting individuals undergoing chemotherapy, addressing dental poverty, adapting to modern communication channels, and prescribing fruits and vegetables for a holistic approach to healthcare.

Healthcare goes beyond medical treatments and extends to addressing the basic needs of individuals and families. During a team debrief, the discussion touched on the importance of supporting individuals undergoing chemotherapy, addressing dental poverty, and even considering the possibility of prescribing fruits and vegetables. The team acknowledged the need to understand and adapt to modern communication channels like TikTok to reach a wider audience and promote health and wellness. I love chatting with Simon Mills, he has a wonderful breadth of knowledge across the huge spectrum of different herbs and spices. And he can talk eloquently and sensitively about them, in a manner respectful of both the traditional beliefs and uses of them, as well as the science that may or may not support their claims.

Today we talk about the use of spices and what extra benefits they may be adding to our diets beyond simply “antioxidants”.

We talk about bitters and tonics and why they may work.

We explore how spices may impact our gut microbiota and potentially influence their health benefits.

Rosemary and sage on the brain, ginger for colds and how traditional antiseptics worked.

Simon Mills is a University of Cambridge graduate in medical sciences who has been a herbal practitioner in Exeter UK since 1977. He has been a complementary health pioneer from the inception of the term in 1979, and later in the fields of integrated health, selfcare and social prescription. #250 Health Statistics Everyone Should Know

#250 Health Statistics Everyone Should Know

Today I’m talking about statistics to do with food and health that everyone should know.

How much it costs us every year, where it sits on the list of the biggest contributors to ill health and death globally, what the impact of good food actually is and how bad people are currently eating according to current guidelines.

I don’t think many people appreciate these numbers. I get a lot of glossed looks whenever I talk about the impact of poor food on health outcomes, particularly with certain medical professionals. It’s often seen as an inevitability and the nonchalant nature in which we address the foundations of ill health is seen within these statistics. We all need to do better.

There is huge potential for improved health if we simply encourage and empower people to eat well everyday and that will have a knock on effect on productivity, wealth, happiness, relationships and so on. I don’t present this idea as a panacea, but just a huge tool in our aspiration for improving wellbeing.

James Davies, author of “Body”, is the founder and CEO of Rising Health, which he started 10 years ago and his clients include David Beckham, Kylie Minogue, Philip Schofield, Mo Farah among many others. He has worked globally with professional athletes ranging from Olympic champions, premiership footballers, NFL and rugby union players, as well as A-List actors like Eva Mendes. He is the sought after therapist and even served the Great Britain team at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and at the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

But rather than being trained as a physiotherapist, like most practitioners are who work for national teams, James actually trained at the British School of Osteopathy. He studied Massage and Sports injuries at the London School of Massage, Tecar Therapy in Italy, Tok Sen in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and is a noted authority on laser therapy, dry needling, acupuncture and cupping.

As a performance therapist and athletics coach, James is able to integrate a range of therapies including, massage, biomechanics and functional and structural applications. He developed the ethos of relieve, restore and perform based on his own personal experience as a young athlete, and his experience working with elite athletes.

This is a really cool conversation for me to have, I loved chatting with James, I learnt a lot from his new book ‘Body’, the language of pain, finding joy in movement and I loved how the majority of what we talked about came down to finding balance and creating a stress free life. Enjoy!

The Power of Plants to Nourish & Heal

The Power of Plants to Nourish & Heal
Imagine this: you are a practicing pediatric ER doctor; all day long every day you treat kids that are not just overweight, but obese. More than obese, these kids are sick — really sick. What do you do? Well, you can do what most doctors do – tell the kids to ditch the salt, sugar and fat; swap the video games for some fresh air; maybe prescribe some medication for the cholesterol or blood pressure; then move on to the next patient. No time to linger…. Or you can take a harder road. Despite a fellowship at Harvard Medical School, full time employment as an emergency room pediatrician, and editor of 3 medical textbooks, Dr. Sujit Sharma felt the need to do more. It was time to try something new: address the cause; focus on prevention; identify and provide doable, sustainable solutions that actually work. Radical! It was around this time that Dr. Sanjay Gupta– Sujit's longtime University of Michigan buddy and yes, the guy from CNN — introduced Sujit to his friend Ladell Hill — a molecular health specialist, herbalist, fitness trainer and wellness expert who had been spent the last 20 years researching and experimenting with nutrition. A passion for healing Ladell inherited as legacy from his Native American grandfather. When he wasn't training celebrities like Gwen Stefani & Lenny Kravitz, Ladell studied tirelessly for years to understand how to best apply the wisdom of his grandfather to his modern practice of health and wellness. He came to realize that science now substantiated much of what he learned from his grandfather: the power of an indigenous, whole food plant-based diet to not only promote overall well being and wellness optimization but to also expedite physiological recovery from exercise induced stress and even — in certain cases — prevent and reverse disease. Bold and powerful, particularly when you get a glimpse of Ladell, who at almost 50 sports jacked guns and the physique a 26 year old NFL running back would envy. Sujit and Ladell immediately hit it off. The result of their collaboration, combined expertise and passion is Chuice – a brand new category of food product that can only be explained as chewable juice. Chewable juice?!? Say what? Bizarre, right? I was skeptical. But I've tried it and it's great – a mastication of nuts and seeds plus fruit and vegetable juice with all the fiber, every ingredient chosen for a specific cellular benefit — it's like a delicious, super easily digestible whole food meal in a bottle. Disclaimer: This is not a paid endorsement or an advertisement of any kind. I have absolutely no business, financial, sponsorship, affiliate or other incentivized relationship with Chuice whatsoever. I just like these guys and find their mission worthy of discussion. A couple months ago, Sanjay introduced me to Sujit and Ladell simply because he thought we would hit it off. Out of courtesy to Sanjay, I ended up calling Sujit a couple days later thinking we would have a cordial few minutes on the phone. Instead we spoke for almost two hours — dialoging on everything to wellness, to plant-based nutrition to the state of medicine and disease prevention. At at that moment I knew I needed to meet Ladell and have these guys on the show. They do not disappoint — a fascinating deep dive into the state of nutrition education in medical school; the ills of our current healthcare system; the potency and power of plants to prevent and heal disease; and a culminating call to action to return to the natural. I sincerely hope you enjoy the listen. Rich
