#195: Finding Life on the Other Side of PTSD with Shannon Moyer-Szemenyei

Today we are speaking with Holistic Counsellor and Author, Shannon Moyer-Szemenyei.  Shannon is a Leader. Wife. Mother. Friend. Poet. Mentor. Human. She is a believer in fundamental rights, standing up for oneself, owning your truth, and being a kind and compassionate human being, leaving a positive impact wherever possible. Shannon lives with her family in London, Ontario and, when not writing or nurturing others, you can find her at the hockey rink or horse barn with her boys, or cuddled on the couch with her rescue dog, Berney.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    1. The power of finding ourselves in our stories even though it is an incredibly difficult situation. Being quiet and hiding in our stories doesn’t serve anyone. This is a punishment to ourselves.
    2. What does Owning your Truth mean, and how Shannon’s mental health and healing was far more important than the discomfort of others.
    3. When we turn the inner dialogue off to protect others, we stop listening to our own intuition and voice.
    4. Trauma is relative to your own individual experience in life as a human being. Shannon speaks openly about how trauma impacts and affects our brain and how we then process those pieces. We have to deal with the root causes of our trauma in order to move through it.
    5. Shannon shares her experience with postpartum depression and psychosis, PTSD, and how she worked to find her living on the other side of PTSD.

675 | An Opportunity To Celebrate And Honour Women

In this episode, we talk about the energy and experience of International Women’s Day, and the theme of 2024 is Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress. It is an important day because

women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political. Now do I wish it was celebrated more often and in other ways, the answer is yes. I have a few thoughts to share on this.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    1) The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. It is an opportunity to celebrate women’s accomplishments, highlighting the work that still needs to be done and connecting women from all over the world.

    2) I feel like corporations are celebrating this and there’s more room for female entrepreneurs to celebrate each other.  A rising tide does lift all ships.

674 | Your Voice Goes Further Than You Think with Kristina Coccoluto

In this episode, we speak with Speaker and Patient Advocate Kristina Coccoluto. Kristina is a previvor, born with the BRCA1 mutation, leaving her with an 87% lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer and a 60% risk of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She took her circumstances into her own hands and began her marathon journey as a distraction before having a risk-reducing double mastectomy. Raising funds and awareness for the cancer community for almost a decade, she knew she could serve others on a deeper level, but didn't quite know the direction to take. And last year, as she crossed the Boston finish line, 28 weeks after a complete hysterectomy everything she had endured began to make sense. Kristina is a wife, mom of 3 kiddos, melanoma survivor, and a 3 star Abbot World Major Marathoner and she's not done yet. Kristina is stepping into her purpose by using her voice as a motivational speaker to empower others, advocate for change, and provide hope for those facing their own mortality.

    In this episode, we discuss:
    1) Kristina’s story, the choices she had to make concerning her health and her risks, and how it was a gift to have choices as so many prior generations didn’t have the gift of these choices.

    2)  How this journey has been so healing for Kristina, how she is learning to see herself differently and realize the impact and the reach her voice and story can have to help others who’ve felt alone and isolated in their journeys.

673 | You Think And Act Like It’s Further Away Than You Think

673 | You Think And Act Like It’s Further Away Than You Think

In this episode, we talk about our thoughts how far away we think something is, and how our thoughts, beliefs, and actions are keeping it further away.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    1) Your actions will show up according to and be consistent with how far away you think “it is”.  If you tell yourself that something is far away, your energy, actions, and how you respond will be as if it is far away.  A lot can change quickly when your actions show up and match that.

    2) I heard Ed Mylett say that most of us have a depth perception problem.  Because you think it is further away than what it is, you have created patterns, beliefs, thoughts and processes, actions steps, habits, rituals, and ultimately results that keep what you are working towards further away than you think and keep it further away.

672 | Resiliency Is Never Fun In The Moment

672 | Resiliency Is Never Fun In The Moment

In this episode, we talk about resiliency and how it is never a fun lesson to learn in the moment.

“Resilience is the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands.”

    In this episode, we discuss:

    1) Resiliency is never fun in the moment and you don’t realize what you are building until later, until you come across another situation, maybe a similar one and you recognize that you are acting or responding differently, and you see that you are building your resiliency muscle.  It is a muscle and much like a muscle in the gym, it requires you to break it down, for it to rebuild during rest. You don’t see your work in the time you did your workout or when you go to the gym, you see it later when your numbers go up or your strength increases.

    2) Can you build resiliency without building a hardened heart?  I believe it is entirely possible and it starts with the practice of self-compassion and honouring how far you have come.

670 | What Would Your Future Self Say?

670 | What Would Your Future Self Say?

In this episode, we talk about what your future self would say. Let’s play a fun game, and look at one year from today, February 2025, and what would your future self say to you? How would you look back with pride for how you showed up for yourself, what you said yes and no to, the boundaries you put into place, how you honoured your energy and joy, and how you showed up for yourself?

    In this episode, we discuss:

    1) The idea for this episode came from the sharing of recent episodes, if you don’t take the time to enjoy the steps, actions, and mundane steps in between you will never enjoy the final destination and sometimes as humans, we have to work backward first to see how far we have come instead of always looking forward.

    2) Life is teaching us lessons every single day. What am I saying yes to today that I now have new information and wouldn’t say yes to it? You will never reach a bigger goal than you can dream of.  How big can you allow yourself to dream, think, show up as, or even surround yourself with people who can show and inspire you to stretch yourself?  You aren’t that version of yourself YET.

669 | Be Willing To Choose Your Future Self

In this episode, we talk about making choices from the energy of your future self and where you are going and not where you have been.  I am sharing an experience that I witnessed firsthand with clients and I was so damn proud of them and wanted to share it with you.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    1) Action trumps fear and consistent action steps will be the building blocks to create the shift in you that is available.

    2) Your future dream or vision requires you to show up for yourself, do the uncomfortable thing, choose growth, believe in yourself a little bit more, and know that your actions are serving a bigger purpose

667 | The Art & Skill of Coaching - Coach Series with Jess DeMarchis

In this episode, I am resharing an interview with Jess DeMarchis on the Art and Skill of Coaching Podcast.  We dove into the conversation of why NLP, and why the coaching industry requires more standardization, especially when dealing with people’s traumatic stories and experiences.  Jess went deep into my story that led me to NLP, why I felt called to it, and why I knew building a certification program was my next step even when it didn’t make logical sense.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    1) That you can do ‘the work’, but if you’re lacking results, you might not be going deep enough. I found myself in a hospital bed before I discovered the modality that would change my life and health.
