    enJuly 03, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Damien Haas talks about his love for ghouls and horror-themed topicsDamien Haas shares his fascination with ghouls and their unique sense of humor, despite their gruesome eating habits. The group discusses their favorite horror topics and ranks skeletons and ghouls as cool monsters.

Damien Haas, a guest on the SmoshCast, shares a love for all things spooky, particularly ghouls, despite their gruesome eating habits. The group discussed their favorite horror-themed topics, including two-sentence horrors and creating the worst demons. Damien's fascination with ghouls stems from their sense of humor and the unique lore surrounding them, even though they consume human flesh. The group also touched on the topic of monsters' coolness factor, with skeletons and ghouls ranking high on their list. The conversation showcased Damien's passion for the macabre and the group's appreciation for the fun side of horror.

    • Individual experiences shape our perceptions of seemingly frightening objectsRespecting and showing compassion towards seemingly frightening objects may prevent them from causing harm, as individual experiences play a significant role in shaping our perceptions

Despite their ominous reputation, skeletons are often portrayed in a light-hearted manner in horror movies, while personal fears can vary greatly from person to person. For instance, Damien shared a childhood experience with a porcelain clown doll that, instead of instilling fear, brought him comfort. The doll, which was left in the attic, would play music on its own, and Damien brought it down to keep as a cherished possession. Contrary to popular belief, it seems that showing respect and compassion towards seemingly frightening objects may prevent them from causing harm. This anecdote highlights the importance of individual perspectives and experiences in shaping our perceptions of the world around us.

    • Recognizing and validating unique fearsUnderstand everyone's fears are valid, and aim to be supportive and understanding rather than dismissive. Engage in small talk to create positive interactions.

Everyone has unique fears and anxieties, even if they may seem irrational or insignificant to others. For instance, one person might be terrified of paperwork due to fear of legal repercussions, while another might be fearful of being in an elevator with someone too far away and not holding the door open for them. These fears can be rooted in social anxiety or something even more irrational. It's essential to recognize and understand that everyone's experiences are valid, and we should aim to be supportive and understanding rather than dismissive. Additionally, finding common ground and engaging in small talk can help create positive interactions, even if we may not be fully present in the moment.

    • People pleasers and their fear of misunderstandingsPeople pleasers often feel anxious about being misunderstood or misinterpreted, leading to overthinking and emotional distress. Prioritizing personal needs and learning to say no can help find balance.

People pleasers often find themselves in situations where they feel obligated to help or engage with others, even when it's inconvenient or uncomfortable for them. This fear of disappointing others can lead to promises being made that are difficult to keep, and can result in feelings of anxiety and stress. One common fear for people pleasers is the fear of being misunderstood or misinterpreted by others. This fear can lead to overthinking and rumination on potential misunderstandings, and can cause significant emotional distress. Text messages and group chats can also be sources of anxiety for people pleasers, especially when they involve large groups of people or when they feel like they don't belong. It's important for people pleasers to prioritize their own needs and boundaries, and to learn how to say no when necessary. This can be a challenging process, but with effort and support, it's possible to find a balance between pleasing others and taking care of oneself.

    • Formatting matters in online communitiesA poorly formatted post in an online community can lead to ridicule and embarrassment, but it's important to not let setbacks discourage us and keep trying.

Formatting and first impressions matter, even in online communities. A poorly formatted post can lead to ridicule and the disbanding of a group. This was experienced by the speaker when they attempted to share a post on a popular SketchUp group, only for the formatting to fall apart and the group to make fun of it. The speaker was under pressure and tried to resend the post, but it only worsened the situation. This experience was compared to trying to fit in with the popular kids at prom. Despite the fear and embarrassment, the speaker learned that it's important to not let setbacks discourage us and to keep trying. Additionally, the conversation veered towards fear and the deep ocean, with the speaker expressing thalassophobia and sharing stories about terrifying deep-sea creatures like the Megalodon and anglerfish. The conversation ended with the speaker sharing some 2-sentence horror stories from a popular Reddit subreddit. Overall, the conversation highlighted the importance of resilience in the face of embarrassment and the fascination with the unknown and terrifying aspects of the deep ocean.

    • The Power of Semicolons in Two-Sentence Horror StoriesSemicolons add suspense and intrigue in horror stories; examples include 'Golden Arm' and 'Come down here for a minute, won't you, sweetie?'

The use of semicolons in writing, particularly in two-sentence horror stories, can create suspense and intrigue. The discussion revolved around various examples of such stories, including the "Golden Arm," which was originally a book and later adapted into a Quibi show. The speakers also shared their experiences of reading scary stories as children and discovering unexpected twists in them. One speaker recalled waking up to the sound of knocking on glass, only to realize it was coming from the mirror. Another favorite story was "Come down here for a minute, won't you, sweetie?" in which a mother calls her child from downstairs, but the child's response is a scream. The conversation also touched upon the shared love for horror movies and the speakers' recent experiences with them. Despite the scary themes, the overall mood was light and enjoyable, showcasing the power of storytelling to entertain and engage.

    • Exploring deepest fears through horror moviesHorror movies offer a unique blend of fantasy and reality, allowing us to confront and reflect on our deepest fears.

Horror movies serve as a way for people to confront their deepest fears by exploring the genre's roots in reality. The speaker shares her love for horror, explaining that it allows for the merging of fantasy and reality to create a truly terrifying experience. She also discusses specific examples from horror stories, such as the devil's deal for eternal youth, and the implications of these stories. While some may find the devil's deal to be disturbing or even a turn-on, the speaker suggests that it could be seen as a positive development, as Satan is now occupied and unable to cause harm to others. Overall, the conversation highlights the complex and often thought-provoking nature of horror stories and their ability to explore deep psychological fears.

    • Unexpected humor in internet horror storiesInternet offers unique expressions of creativity, from intentionally bad parodies to unintentionally hilarious results, providing endless entertainment and joy in discovering unexpected humor.

The internet allows people from all walks of life to express themselves creatively, even if the result is not always polished or scary as intended. The discussion revolved around a parody of horror stories, where some were intentionally bad and others were unintentionally hilarious. Michael Jordan's failed baseball career was brought up as an example of unintentional humor. The group also shared personal experiences of discovering unexpected outcomes when watching media, such as a Wario movie instead of Mario. They acknowledged that sometimes the scariest things are not external but rather internal, like a haunted mind. Overall, the conversation highlighted the joy of discovering unexpected humor and the uniqueness of the creative expressions found on the internet.

    • Discovering the Similarity of Men's and Women's Eye CreamsGender labels on products may not always reflect the actual differences between them. Choose the better version of a product, regardless of its label.

Marketing labels and gender-specific product designations may not always reflect the actual differences between products. During a visit to a beauty supply store, the speaker discovered that a men's version of an eye cream from Kiehl's was being sold for no apparent reason other than its packaging. The store employee confirmed that the ingredients were similar, and the speaker learned that it's often more beneficial to choose the better version of a product, regardless of its label. Additionally, the speaker shared their excitement about a new hobby: playing Dungeons and Dragons. They emphasized that the game is an improvisational storytelling experience where the "D&D aspects" are minimal. The speaker expressed their joy and pride in the cast and the effort they've put into the project, which they find to be their greatest source of happiness at the moment. Lastly, the speaker shared a humorous anecdote about accidentally spilling "evil beans" (a type of snack) on themselves in a movie theater. The story illustrates the importance of paying attention to details and not jumping to conclusions based on assumptions.

    • Unexpected connections and twists in everyday conversationsAutocorrect mishaps can lead to humorous situations, unexpected resemblances can spark deep discussions, and everyday conversations can surprise us with unexpected twists

Our conversation touched upon various topics, from autocorrect mishaps to unexpected connections between seemingly unrelated things. One amusing example was the speaker's musing about autocorrect as a businessman, trying to type up important messages despite errors. Another topic was the speaker's resemblance to Cat in the Hat, which led to a discussion about the book "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" and its connection to 9/11. We also explored the idea of unexpected twists, using the example of a "murder clown" boat invasion and the phrase "How do you like your eggs?". Overall, our conversation showcased the unexpected connections and twists that can arise from everyday experiences and conversations.

    • Exploring the Unexpected: Humor and FearSpeakers shared stories of finding humor in unexpected situations and the importance of maintaining a sense of humor in the face of fear or danger.

The discussion touched on various topics, including unexpected encounters, the use of humor, and the fear of the unknown. One anecdote involved ordering food at Denny's late at night, with the speaker using the term "deviled eggs" in a humorous way, only to find out it was an outdated term. Another speaker shared a joke about being called an "old soul" as an insult. The conversation also explored the idea of immortality and the fear of unexpected horrors, such as encountering a gorilla or finding a live grenade. The discussion showcased the speakers' ability to find humor in unexpected situations, even in the face of potential danger or fear. Overall, the conversation demonstrated the importance of maintaining a sense of humor and finding joy in the unexpected.

    • Encountering the Unexpected: A Tale of Surreal ExperiencesUnexpected encounters with unusual creatures and situations led to a series of bizarre experiences, including a not-kill-you man, a devil, a skeleton, land fish, knife guy, the dick sucking devil, a meat worm, a floating nuts incident, and a snow-loving meat worm.

A dollar instead of expected value led to an encounter with a not-kill-you man, a devil, and a skeleton. The discovery of land fish, which were actually amphibians, was terrifying. The speaker was alone, but unexpectedly confronted by knife guy and the dick sucking devil. A moving meat package revealed a meat worm, and a floating nuts incident added to the strange occurrences. The yogurt in the garbage can was unexplained, and a snow-loving meat worm was an unexpected favorite. The discussion also touched upon the idea of having the devil's soul by either winning a violin competition or being considered a dick. Throughout the conversation, the speakers expressed their fascination with the disgusting and bizarre, creating a unique and absurd narrative.

    • Two-sentence horror stories featuring a mysterious creatureParticipants shared unsettling descriptions of a creature from two-sentence horror stories, interpreting its appearance as hunched, fleshy, and almost sad, with no hair and droopy expressions. Some stories hinted at it producing milk or eggnog, leaving participants intrigued and uneasy.

The discussion revolved around a collection of two-sentence horror stories, some of which involved a mysterious and unsettling creature. The participants shared their interpretations of the creature's appearance and behavior, describing it as hunched over, fleshy, and almost sad, with no hair and droopy expressions. Some stories suggested that the creature produced milk or eggnog, leading to the assumption that it was a source of sustenance. The overall tone of the conversation was lighthearted, with the participants finding humor in the strange and disturbing nature of the stories. Despite the playful banter, there was an underlying sense of unease and intrigue, as they continued to explore the details of these bizarre and unsettling tales.

    • Unexpected experiences can evoke strong emotionsStay open-minded and adaptable to life's unexpected experiences, as they can bring about deep connections and new perspectives

Life can bring unexpected experiences, some of which may be unsettling or even terrifying. The speaker's visit to the beach that makes you old and his encounter with wanted criminals at his daughter's school are examples of such experiences. While some people may find comfort in familiar things like scarecrows, others may find them terrifying. Effective storytelling can evoke strong emotions and make us question our perspectives. For instance, the speaker initially expressed a love for scarecrows but later revealed his fear of them, and his interaction with a crow named Alice showed a deep connection and understanding between them. Ultimately, it's essential to remain open-minded and adaptable to the twists and turns that life throws our way.

    • Encountering Unusual Creatures in D&DDuring a D&D session, unusual creatures and characters added excitement, inspiration, and versatility to the game, allowing players and audience to learn and discover new things.

During a late-night Dungeons and Dragons session, the group encountered unusual creatures like penis men and a dick sucking demon. These elements added excitement and inspiration to their game. Amanda's character, Dolores Paradise, a halfling warlock, is a nurturing and motherly figure with hidden desires. Shane's character, a giant wooden robot named Warforged, is gullible and curious, adding humor and wonder to the game. The group's exploration of these characters and the D&D world allows both the players and the audience to learn and discover new things. Overall, their creative and engaging gameplay showcases the versatility and fun of Dungeons and Dragons.

    • A new tabletop RPG campaign with a unique delivery service twistListeners are encouraged to try a new tabletop RPG where heroes have to adapt to a post-heroic era and start a delivery service for creative freedom and character depth.

The speakers have been enjoying their experience in a new tabletop role-playing game campaign, where they play as part of a mercenary group in a post-heroic era. The game's concept is that after the typical heroic adventures and battles, there are too many heroes and not enough jobs, so they have started a delivery service. The speakers have praised the game's creative freedom and the depth of the characters they've encountered. They also mentioned the involvement of Angela and Chance in their group and looked forward to having them on the show to discuss their characters. The speakers described the game as a unique spin on the classic D&D formula and encouraged listeners to check it out. The Anatomy of Trust | Dr. Brené Brown

In a live appearance at UCLA’s Royce Hall, Dr. Brené Brown discusses the fundamentals of trust. Brené explains how she was moved to focus on the topic after watching her daughter struggle with a betrayal of trust. Brené says she eventually found a way to teach her daughter to build trust and identify the people in her life who deserve it. She also explains why gossip harms relationships more than we realize and creates an intimacy that isn’t real. This talk is universal to all relationships. Enjoy!

"The Whole Halfling Huddle" - Answering Your Questions

"The Whole Halfling Huddle" - Answering Your Questions

It's time for another Q&A! Once again, Liv and Jeremy are hopping into our Discord to answer more of your burning questions. Stay tuned to hear them talk about running a Session 0, the 3 R's of Incorporating a Culture or Group that Isn't Yours, and whether Jeremy is less "friendly" or "neighborhood" as a DM!

3 R's for Incorporating a Culture or Group that Isn't Yours:
Respect - Show respect for the culture you're drawing from, taking it seriously and avoiding harmful stereotypes. For example, if something is sacred or offensive to that culture or has particular significance, take that into account when you consider adapting that thing for your character/world.
Research - Look up information about the culture from multiple sources, ideally sources created by people from that culture. Be sure to research common stereotypes and pitfalls when depicting the culture so you don't blunder into them by mistake. Finally, not everyone has the resources for it, but if you do, hiring a sensitivity consultant to take a look at your plans could be a great idea.
Relax - You'll probably make a mistake at some point, so be sure to handle it with grace and humility! Listen to people who know better when they point out where you messed up. It's okay to make mistakes as long as you sincerely apologize and learn from them.
