      Cognitive decline in later life is not inevitable, and simple steps can be taken to keep our brains healthy. The brain, like muscles, needs stimulus to maintain its size and function. If we stop using it, we risk losing cognitive abilities. This can be achieved inexpensively and simply by incorporating brain-boosting habits into our daily lives. These habits may include learning new skills, staying socially engaged, getting enough sleep, and maintaining a healthy diet.

      The brain is capable of incredible feats of learning and development during our formative years, but as we grow older and repeat the same tasks, they become habits and our brains no longer need to put in as much effort. However, engaging in new challenges and complex tasks can help prevent cognitive decline and even lead to brain growth. This was demonstrated in a study of London taxi drivers, where those who passed the rigorous "knowledge" test, which required memorizing all the streets in a six-mile radius of Charing Cross, showed increased brain size on scans compared to those who failed. This suggests that continued learning and mental stimulation are crucial for maintaining brain health and complexity.

Social connection is also vital for brain health, as humans are social species that benefit from being part of a group and having strong relationships. Overall, the brain requires ongoing stimulation from various sources, including nutrition, sleep, light, movement, stress mitigation, and social connection, to maintain optimal health.

    In today's fast-paced world, the pursuit of productivity often leads to overwhelm. In fact, one report suggests that 88% of UK workers have experienced some degree of burnout over the past two years. But what if there’s a better way to work and live?

    This week, I’m delighted to welcome Cal Newport back to my Feel Better Live More podcast. Cal is a professor of computer science at Georgetown University and a founding member of the Center for Digital Ethics. He’s a New York Times bestselling author whose books have reached millions of readers in over forty languages. His latest book, Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout, challenges our current notions of work and offers a revolutionary approach to productivity.

    In our conversation, Cal and I explore the concept of "slow productivity" and how it contrasts with our culture of constant busyness.
