Turning your home into an Airbnb not only brings in extra income but also allows you to share a piece of your world with others. Jen and Joel, the hosts of the podcast, share their experience of designing their home with an Airbnb-inspired spare bedroom and personal touches to make their guests feel welcomed. They emphasize the importance of making guests feel cherished and appreciated, transforming a home from gathering dust into a ticket to new adventures. Gavin de Becker, a genius and current security consultant for Jeff Bezos, was a guest on the podcast, discussing fear and the human fear response. While not a light-hearted episode, it offers valuable insights into understanding and managing fear. The Jordan Harbinger Show's primary mission is to share these insights and experiences with their audience.

    • Engaging with listeners and providing guidanceFollow instructions for effective advice implementation, use Squadcast.fm for podcast recording, prioritize health and safety, and find practical tips for working from home on the Jordan Harbinger Podcast.

The Jordan Harbinger Podcast's Feedback Friday segment aims to engage directly with listeners and provide guidance to enhance their lives. The show's team emphasizes the importance of following instructions, as their ability to implement advice depends on it. They recommend using Squadcast.fm for podcast recording and have migrated their 6-minute networking course to Thinkific. Due to the global situation, they encourage listeners to prioritize health and safety by staying home and following CDC guidelines. They also share practical tips for working from home based on their collective decades of experience.

    • Maximize productivity while working from homeInvest in ergonomic peripherals, use collaboration tools, and ensure a reliable internet connection to enhance productivity while working from home.

To maximize productivity while working from home, it's essential to prioritize ergonomics and effective communication. Firstly, invest in external peripherals like keyboards, mice, and adjustable workstations to prevent wrist fatigue and back pain. Secondly, utilize collaboration tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams to minimize emails and streamline communication with colleagues. Lastly, ensure you have a reliable and fast internet connection to support video conferencing and screen sharing during virtual meetings. These adjustments can significantly enhance your work-from-home experience and help you maintain productivity levels comparable to an office setting.

    • Creating a Professional Work Environment at HomeDress up, set up a workspace, use productivity tools, avoid distractions, maintain a routine to boost productivity and focus while working from home.

Working from home requires discipline and structure to maintain productivity and focus. Dressing up, setting up a designated workspace, and avoiding distractions like the kitchen are essential for creating a professional work environment. Using productivity tools like Pomodoro timers can help manage focus and prevent distractions. Don't fall into the trap of wearing pajamas all day, as it can lead to a slippery slope of decreased productivity and motivation. Additionally, try to maintain a routine as if you were going to an office to help establish a clear boundary between work and personal life.

    • Maximizing Productivity in Remote WorkThe Pomodoro Technique, managing expectations, keeping a schedule, using to-do lists, setting boundaries, and maintaining focus are all effective strategies for maximizing productivity while working from home.

Effective time management and clear communication are crucial for success in working from home. The Pomodoro Technique, managing expectations, keeping a schedule, using to-do lists, setting boundaries, and maintaining focus are all essential strategies for maximizing productivity and minimizing distractions. It's important to remember that everyone's situation is different, and there will be variations in productivity levels during the initial adjustment period. Be patient with colleagues and communicate clearly about work hours and availability. Establishing clear boundaries between work and home life is also crucial for avoiding burnout. Overall, the key is to create a routine and stick to it, while remaining flexible and understanding of the unique challenges presented by remote work.

    • Setting work boundaries for mental healthTurn off notifications, use tools for meetings, schedule breaks, respect others' boundaries to maintain mental health and work-life balance.

Setting clear boundaries and disconnecting from work during off-hours is crucial for maintaining mental and emotional well-being. This applies not only to work communication but also to personal relationships. Jen shares her experience of the negative impact of constant work intrusion on her personal time, leading to anxiety and sleepless nights. To avoid this, she suggests turning off notifications for certain hours, using tools like Zoom for meetings, and scheduling breaks for physical activity or hobbies. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of respecting others' boundaries and not encroaching on their personal time with work-related matters. With the ongoing pandemic forcing many of us to work from home, it's essential to establish these boundaries to prevent burnout and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

    • Never too late to change careersIt's common for people to have second acts in their careers, regardless of age. High demand cybersecurity jobs offer potential for growth and fulfillment, despite initial financial concerns.

It's never too late to change careers, even if you're 40 or have been in the same job for 20 years. The speaker in this discussion expresses feeling trapped and unfulfilled in her current role, but is interested in pursuing a career in cybersecurity. She's concerned about the financial implications of taking a pay cut and starting from scratch, but was encouraged by the podcast hosts that it's common for people to have second acts in their careers and that she's not too old to learn new skills. They also mentioned that cybersecurity jobs are currently in high demand and have a 100% hire rate. The hosts suggested that she continue to educate herself in the field, network, and consider the long-term benefits of making a change. Overall, the discussion emphasized the importance of not letting fear or feelings of being stuck hold you back from pursuing something new and fulfilling.

    • Career Change in Cybersecurity is Possible for Older AdultsOlder adults can change careers to cybersecurity with free education resources, high demand, and potential benefits. Maintaining work-life balance with a friend boss requires open communication and consideration of productivity and personal well-being.

Changing careers, even at an older age, is possible, especially in the field of cybersecurity. With numerous resources available for free education, including from the Department of Defense, individuals can learn new skills and even be hired with relocation benefits and paid certifications. Furthermore, the demand for cybersecurity professionals is high, making it a desirable and lucrative career option. Regarding work-life balance, it can be challenging to maintain a professional relationship with a friend and boss, especially when personal habits clash with work expectations. In the case of a filmmaker who takes frequent breaks to jog in place, it's essential to consider the impact on productivity and workplace dynamics. However, it's also important to prioritize personal well-being and communicate openly with the boss about concerns and potential solutions. Additionally, the discussion highlighted the importance of understanding individual energy levels and work styles, as well as the flexibility that remote work can offer in accommodating various needs. Overall, the conversation emphasized the importance of self-reflection, communication, and adaptability in navigating professional and personal relationships.

    • Respecting Others' Work HabitsAcknowledge and address colleagues' concerns about distracting habits, but also encourage breaks and movement for productivity and health. Prioritize building meaningful relationships and offering mentorship within your network.

It's important to respect others' work environments and consider their preferences when it comes to work habits. Bouncing legs or making noise while working may be distracting to some, and it's crucial to acknowledge and address their concerns. However, taking breaks and moving around is essential for maintaining productivity and overall health. As for networking, it's important to prioritize building meaningful relationships and mentoring those within your network. Cold call requests from strangers can be time-consuming and may not yield productive outcomes. Instead, focus on strengthening existing connections and offering guidance when asked. Remember, everyone has unique work styles and preferences, and it's essential to be considerate and adaptable to ensure a productive and harmonious work environment.

    • Clarify requests before agreeing to a meetingProtect your time by asking for clarification before agreeing to a meeting. Focus on helping those who have earned your attention and provide specific advice.

When someone asks to meet up for advice, it's important to protect your time and clarify their request before agreeing to a meeting. Many people who ask for advice don't really know what they're asking for or are just looking to validate their ideas. Instead, ask them to provide more background and clarify their question. This not only helps you determine if you can truly help them, but also saves time by eliminating time-wasters. Additionally, focus on helping the top 10-20% of people who have earned your time and attention by asking specific questions and providing clear, actionable advice. Remember, your time is valuable, and it's important to use it wisely. Don't be afraid to screen requests and force people to clarify their thinking before offering your help. And if you do decide to meet with someone, consider batching multiple meetings together to maximize your time and efficiency.

    • Maximizing Time Through Strategic Coffee MeetingsEffectively managing time through strategic coffee meetings can lead to productive connections and increased productivity. Carefully selecting attendees and batching inbound requests can help maximize time and make new contacts.

Effective time management can lead to productive and meaningful connections. The CEOs mentioned in the discussion found success in dedicating a day to scheduling multiple 15-minute coffee meetings. By batching their inbound requests and carefully selecting attendees, they were able to make new contacts and friends while also getting work done during the brief sessions. This strategy allowed them to plow through their schedule and maximize their time. However, it's important to note that proper screening is necessary to ensure productive conversations and avoid wasting time on uninterested or unfocused individuals. For those who struggle with social anxiety, particularly around attractive people, it's essential to acknowledge and address the root cause of the issue. In some cases, it may be related to feelings of attraction or perceived lower status, which can create unnecessary shame and self-doubt. Embracing openness and understanding human emotions can help individuals navigate these situations and build stronger relationships.

    • Misunderstanding Social Anxiety for AttractionRealize social anxiety isn't attraction, build confidence to overcome it, and address family trauma with professional help

Social anxiety and nervousness around attractive people are common experiences, but they are not the same as sexual attraction. People with social anxiety may mistake their shyness for attraction, but the text makes it clear that sexual attraction is present in this situation. To overcome social anxiety, it's important to realize that people in high-status positions often don't pay much attention to others' speaking time and that practice and confidence can help. In a different context, the text discusses the emotional challenges of dealing with family issues, specifically the aftermath of sibling abuse. In this case, the youngest brother is feeling the weight of supporting his struggling second oldest brother while also dealing with his own mental and emotional struggles. It's important to note that addressing family trauma often involves more complex solutions than just offering to live together, and seeking professional help for all involved parties is crucial.

    • Setting healthy boundaries with family membersLearn to prioritize your own well-being by setting healthy boundaries with family members, especially those with addiction or past issues. Seek therapy for guidance and support.

While it's natural to feel a sense of responsibility towards family members, especially those with addiction or past issues, it's important to establish healthy boundaries and prioritize your own well-being. Seeking therapy can help you learn how to do this effectively, and living with a family member with addiction issues can bring those problems into your own home and negatively impact your life and the lives of those closest to you. It's crucial to remember that you are not responsible for the actions or well-being of adults in your family, and that setting healthy boundaries is a necessary part of maintaining a healthy and successful life. Additionally, therapy can provide valuable guidance and wisdom to help you navigate complex family dynamics and learn to prioritize your own needs.

    • Effective communication and relationship building for managing stress and productivityInvest in learning new skills and knowledge, engage with the show community, and use systems and tiny habits to book great guests and maintain relationships.

Effective communication and building strong relationships are key to managing stress and productivity, especially during challenging times like working from home. The speaker, Jordan Harbinger, shared his strategies for booking great guests and maintaining relationships through systems and tiny habits. He also encouraged listeners to invest in learning new skills and knowledge before they need them, and to engage with the show community on social media. The episode was produced in association with Podcast One and featured music by Evan Viola. Remember, the advice given is not legal advice, and it's important to do your own research before implementing anything you hear on the show. Stay tuned for more valuable content in 2020, and in the meantime, apply what you learn to live what you listen.

1050: Lisa Kaltenegger | In Search of Alien Life and Livable Worlds

Are we alone in the universe? Alien Earths author Lisa Kaltenegger joins us to discuss new discoveries in humanity's hunt for extraterrestrial life.

What We Discuss with Lisa Kaltenegger:

    • The universe contains billions of stars and galaxies, with an estimated one out of five stars having a planet that could be similar to Earth in terms of potential habitability.
    • Scientists use various methods to detect exoplanets, including observing changes in starlight and analyzing the light spectrum of planets to detect signs of life-sustaining elements like oxygen and methane.
    • The search for extraterrestrial life involves looking for planets in the "habitable zone" or "Goldilocks zone" around stars, where conditions might allow for liquid water on the surface.
    • The observable universe is limited by the speed of light and the age of the universe (approximately 13.7 billion years), meaning we can only see as far as light has had time to travel since the Big Bang.
    • Anyone can contribute to space exploration and scientific discovery by staying curious, learning about new discoveries, and supporting science education. Even simple actions like looking up at the night sky and wondering about our place in the universe can inspire a lifelong passion for science and exploration.

    What We Discuss:

    • The extreme brutality and inhumane conditions in the United States prison system, including rampant violence, unsanitary living conditions, and inadequate medical care.
    • The complex and dangerous social dynamics within prison, including racial segregation, gang politics, and the constant threat of violence.
    • The psychological impact of long-term incarceration, including the difficulty of reintegrating into society and the lasting trauma experienced by both inmates and their families.
    • The systemic issues within the American prison system, particularly the profit-driven motives of private prisons that perpetuate a cycle of crime and recidivism rather than focusing on rehabilitation.
    • The power of personal transformation and education, as demonstrated by Shaun's journey from drug kingpin to advocate for prison reform. 1046: Hydrotherapy | Skeptical Sunday

    1046: Hydrotherapy | Skeptical Sunday

Ice plunges, hot soaks, and eight glasses a day: Jessica Wynn splashes cold water on hydrotherapy myths and explores potential benefits on Skeptical Sunday!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss:

    • Hydrotherapy, which includes various uses of water for health purposes, lacks substantial scientific evidence for many of its claimed benefits, especially for generally healthy individuals.
    • The popular belief that we need to drink eight glasses of water a day is a myth perpetuated by beverage companies. Our bodies are well-equipped to signal thirst when we need hydration.
    • Extreme temperature changes in hydrotherapy, such as alternating between hot and cold water, can be dangerous and potentially lead to fainting, heart problems, or drowning.
    • Many of the alleged benefits of hydrotherapy, such as improved circulation or muscle recovery, can often be achieved through other, potentially safer methods like exercise or breathing techniques.
    • Hydrotherapy does show promise in specific medical contexts, such as pain management for fibromyalgia, easing labor during childbirth, and assisting with certain rehabilitation exercises. If you're interested in exploring hydrotherapy for health reasons, consult with a medical professional to determine if it's appropriate for your individual needs and how to practice it safely.

1043: Andrew Gold | Unveiling the Psychology of Secrets

1043: Andrew Gold | Unveiling the Psychology of Secrets

Are secrets a burden or social glue? Psychology of Secrets author Andrew Gold delves into the evolutionary roots and modern impacts of hiding information.

What We Discuss with Andrew Gold:

    • Keeping secrets can be physically and emotionally painful for humans. This evolved as a mechanism to encourage social cohesion and information sharing within tribal communities.
    • There's a difference between secrets and privacy. What is considered a secret versus private information often depends on societal norms and can change over time.
    • Technology is making it increasingly difficult to keep secrets, with devices like smartwatches and phones potentially revealing information we'd rather keep hidden.
    • Virtue signaling and victim signaling are common behaviors, especially on social media, where people may pretend to hold certain beliefs or experiences for status or attention.
    • Sharing appropriate secrets can increase intimacy and strengthen relationships. By thoughtfully opening up to others, we can build deeper connections and foster trust, leading to more meaningful interactions and a stronger support network.

Is sex trafficking really a global crisis or just an overblown conspiracy theory? Andrew Gold reveals truths and misconceptions on this Skeptical Sunday.

Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by On the Edge host Andrew Gold!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss:

    • Sex trafficking knows no borders, and the United States stands out as a particularly active region for this crime. It victimizes individuals regardless of age — notably, more than a fourth of those trafficked are minors.
    • The scale of sex trafficking is difficult to determine accurately, with estimates varying widely. This uncertainty stems from the underground nature of the crime and challenges in data collection.
    • Sex trafficking victims often suffer severe physical and mental health consequences, including STIs, injuries, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse issues. The average lifespan of women in prostitution is tragically short at around 34 years.
    • The issue of sex trafficking is frequently politicized and weaponized, sometimes exaggerated for political gain. However, it remains a serious problem that ruins thousands of lives through organized crime networks and individual traffickers.
    • Education and awareness are key tools in combating sex trafficking. By learning about the issue, discussing it openly, and spreading accurate information, we can help inform potential victims about the dangers and contribute to prevention efforts. Everyone can play a role in this by staying informed and sharing knowledge with others.

356: How to Make the Most of Quarantine | Deep Dive

Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) joins us for this deep dive exploring the ups and downs of COVID-19 pandemic life and how to make the most of quarantine to emerge better, not beaten, from the experience.

What We Discuss with Gabriel Mizrahi:

    • While you may not be able to control how long the pandemic lasts, you can control your response to it — is there opportunity nestled in the setback?
    • How to use this downtime to strengthen relationships and build skills so you can springboard into action when things regain a semblance of normality.
    • From which everyday nuisances are you spared while quarantining? For which often overlooked boons should you be grateful now?
    • How to work efficiently and effectively from home even if you’ve always relied on the benevolent micromanagement skills of your resident office busybody.
    • How you and your kids could benefit from using this time to learn new skills together — like a new language you can bond over long after the pandemic passes.
    • And much more…

341: Julie Gerberding | Answering Your COVID-19 Questions

Julie Gerberding is the former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).

What We Discuss with Julie Gerberding:

    • What makes COVID-19 so uniquely dangerous compared to other diseases and would-be pandemics we've encountered in the past century?
    • Is staying six feet away from other people really safe enough, and will we have to practice social distancing until we get a COVID-19 vaccine?
    • Is the rapid spread of information -- and misinformation -- by way of the Internet more helpful or hurtful to our efforts to contain the spread of the virus?
    • Why did even our most trusted sources -- like the CDC -- initially discourage us from wearing masks and now insist on them for leaving the house?
    • How much does political pressure from a presidential administration affect the job of a CDC director?
    • And much more...

320: Dennis Carroll | Planning an End to the Pandemic Era

Dennis Carroll is the former USAID director for pandemic influenza and emerging threats. He currently works with The Global Virome Project, an international initiative that seeks to proactively identify, prepare for, and stop viral threats before they become pandemics.

What We Discuss with Dennis Carroll:

    • What’s the difference between an epidemic and a pandemic?
    • Why the occurrence of a future flu epidemic is not a matter of if but when.
    • Vaccine hesitancy (e.g., “anti-vax” hysteria) is one of the top 10 health threats in the entire world.
    • What can we expect from — and how do we prepare for — a worst-case pandemic scenario, and how worried should we be about the current coronavirus threat?
    • Why our incursions into wildlife populations expose humanity to greater health risks than ever before.
    • And much more…

Nicholas Christakis (@NAChristakis) is the Sterling Professor of Social and Natural Science at Yale, a physician, and author. His latest book is Apollo's Arrow: The Profound and Enduring Impact of Coronavirus on the Way We Live.

What We Discuss with Nicholas Christakis:

    • What social science tells us about our best shot (pun moderately intended) at achieving herd immunity from COVID-19.
    • How social networks allowed the virus to spread and reinforced mistrust of well-known science among certain politically oriented segments of the populace.
    • What the lessons of past disasters can teach us about the road ahead.
    • Why the bad (and good) habits of our friends' friends can have an impact on our own behavior from across vast social networks.
    • What we can do to best defend ourselves against the unwanted influence of these unseen members of our network.
    • And much more...

What We Discuss with Todd Kashdan:

    • Why trying to be positive and happy all the time may be harming your ability to get things done and achieve the results you want.

    • The problem with living in a time and place when distraction from discomfort comes in an easier and greater variety than ever before.
