    Podcast Summary

    • Transforming a spare room into an AirbnbSharing unique spaces and local knowledge with travelers can bring in extra income and lead to new connections

Turning a spare room into an Airbnb not only brings in extra income but also allows hosts to share their unique space and local knowledge with travelers. The hosts shared their experience of designing their home with a separate exterior door for guests, adding personal touches, and making their guests feel welcome. They emphasized that a home is an asset that can be utilized in various ways, and becoming an Airbnb host can lead to more adventures and connections. Additionally, the show welcomed a new cohost, Gabriel Mizrahi, who will be providing advice and contributing to the show.

    • Considering the context before offering unsolicited adviceBe mindful of personal circumstances and offer advice thoughtfully and with the person's best interests at heart.

While it's natural to want to help those close to us, it's important to consider the context and potential consequences of unsolicited advice. In the shared podcast episode, the topic of productivity during quarantine was explored, with guests offering insights on staying productive and learning new skills. However, a listener's question about a friend's spending habits and infertility struggles highlighted the need for sensitivity and respect for personal circumstances. While the friend's generosity is admirable, the listener's suggestion to save for IVF instead of buying gifts could be perceived as intrusive. It's essential to remember that everyone's situation is unique, and offering advice should be done thoughtfully and with the person's best interests at heart. Instead, the listener could encourage their friend to explore alternative ways to save for IVF, such as fundraising or seeking financial assistance, while continuing to support them in other ways. Overall, the podcast episode underscores the importance of productivity, learning, and empathy, and encourages listeners to approach life's challenges with a thoughtful and compassionate mindset.

    • Approaching expensive gifts with sensitivity and respectBe considerate when gifting expensively, but respect friend's autonomy and love language in gift giving.

While it's important to consider a friend's financial situation when it comes to expensive gifts, it's crucial to approach the topic with sensitivity and respect their autonomy in expressing love and affection. IVF, an expensive form of fertility treatment, was used as an example in the discussion. The paradigm from the book "5 Love Languages" was applied to this situation, emphasizing the importance of gift giving as a love language. However, it's essential not to discourage gift giving outright, as it might push the friend away and deprive them of the joy they get from giving. The nature of the friendship and the friend's willingness to discuss intimate topics and receive advice are essential factors to consider before offering unsolicited advice. Overall, it's a delicate balance between caring for a friend's well-being and respecting their choices.

    • Discussing friend's desire for a family and financial strugglesEncourage friend to consider savings for family expenses instead of buying gifts, approach conversation with sensitivity, avoid judgment.

If a friend frequently expresses their desire for a family and financial struggles related to having children or undergoing IVF, it may be appropriate for you to gently suggest the possibility of saving for these expenses instead of continually buying gifts. However, it's essential to approach the conversation with sensitivity and avoid appearing judgmental. If your friend rarely brings up the topic, it might be best to avoid the conversation altogether. Ultimately, the decision to have a family and the means to afford it are the friend's responsibility. The conversation can be initiated by asking questions and helping your friend consider their priorities and potential savings plans.

    • Creating a clear plan and setting goalsWhen facing unemployment, set financially responsible deadlines, explore various options, and stay proactive to navigate new opportunities.

When facing unemployment and financial struggles, it's essential to have a clear plan and set realistic goals. Dazed and Quora Infused, who's been unemployed since March, shared his concerns about his resume and job prospects in technology sales despite completing a certificate course. He's also dealing with a gap in his resume due to a year spent in rehab. Jason JPD, the producer, suggested setting financially responsible deadlines and considering various options like returning to the restaurant industry, exploring trades, or pursuing further education. He also recommended reaching out to staffing agencies and shadowing potential employers before making a commitment. Ultimately, having a clear plan and staying proactive can help individuals navigate unemployment and find new opportunities.

    • The importance of prioritizing career goals and staying organizedNeglecting career goals and being disorganized can limit earning potential and happiness. Pursue education in a passionate field, evaluate costs and opportunities, address red flags, tailor resumes, and stay persistent for long-term success.

Being disorganized and neglecting to prioritize your career goals can limit your earning potential and long-term happiness. The speaker's friend is stuck in a dead-end job due to his lack of organization and inability to hire help or collect payments. Instead, it's essential to pursue education and a career in a field you're passionate about, even if it means taking on debt or starting later than planned. When considering further education, it's crucial to evaluate the cost and potential job opportunities after graduation. Regarding job searching, the speaker advises addressing any red flags in your application process, such as short employment tenures or gaps in employment. Be prepared to explain the reasons for leaving a job or taking a gap year in a positive and concise manner. Lastly, tailoring your resume to each job application and including relevant keywords can increase your chances of getting noticed by recruiters. Overall, staying persistent, prioritizing your career goals, and presenting yourself in the best possible light can lead to greater opportunities and long-term success.

    • Considering a career change or helping a loved one with mental health issuesPassionately pursue a career change if it's the right fit, but do so responsibly. Offer familial support for mental health struggles, but set boundaries and prioritize therapy.

If you're considering a career change and have a clear passion for a particular field, such as public health, it may be worth pursuing that path even if it means leaving a current job. The speaker emphasizes that it's important to do so responsibly and for good reasons. In a different context, the speaker offers advice to a listener whose sister is struggling with mental health issues and seems to be regressing despite therapy. The speaker acknowledges the difficulty of the situation and suggests that while therapy should be a priority, familial support and intervention may also be necessary. The speaker expresses sympathy and emphasizes the importance of recognizing when someone is losing themselves and needs help. However, they also caution against enabling harmful behavior and emphasize the importance of setting boundaries while still showing love and support.

    • Family therapy for BPD: Attachment and firm boundariesWhen loved one with BPD isn't responding to therapy, consider family therapy focusing on attachment and setting firm boundaries. Switch therapists if needed. BPD is a trauma response, being around it can be draining. Maintain clear boundaries without cutting off or rejecting.

If a loved one with borderline personality disorder (BPD) is not responding to therapy, it may be necessary for the whole family to seek therapy together, focusing on attachment theory in family systems therapy. The family should consider switching therapists if they're not seeing improvements in communication outside sessions within 1-3 months. BPD is a response to trauma and being around someone with BPD can be draining. It's essential to set and maintain firm boundaries with a person dealing with BPD, without cutting them off or rejecting them. These boundaries help maintain a clear distinction between your life and theirs, reducing the emotional burden on you and potentially benefiting them as well. Remember, this advice is not a medical recommendation but a suggestion based on research and personal experience.

    • Setting boundaries with a loved one with BPDLimit contact, time, and enabling behaviors, allow consequences, and encourage self-help resources for long-term improvement

Setting boundaries with a loved one struggling with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is essential but challenging. It involves limiting contact, time spent together, and enabling behaviors. This process is tough and may lead to short-term discomfort and long-term improvement for both parties. The key is to allow the person with BPD to face consequences and learn to manage their own life. This might involve attending Al-Anon meetings, seeking therapy, or reading helpful books. Remember, only the individual with BPD can save themselves, and it's crucial not to live their life for them. This approach may be difficult, but ultimately, it's the healthiest option for everyone involved.

    • Recognizing and addressing our own flaws as parentsBeing self-aware and addressing our shortcomings can help us be better parents and support our children's growth. Consider the long-term benefits and persist through challenges to reach your goals.

Being a thoughtful parent means acknowledging and addressing our own flaws, especially when they may impact our children. The speaker in this discussion shares his experience of recognizing his own shortcomings and how they might be transferred to his child. He also emphasizes the importance of accepting that sometimes the best way to help our children is by stopping our own self-sabotaging behaviors. In another situation, a listener shares her struggle with learning German and dealing with anxiety during interactive classes. The speaker provides advice on deciding whether to push through or quit, suggesting considering the long-term goals and potential benefits of continuing the effort. Overall, the discussion highlights the importance of self-awareness, resilience, and persistence in dealing with challenges and supporting our loved ones.

    • Overcoming initial resistance in language learningDon't give up on learning a new language despite initial challenges. Overcome resistance and keep going for personal growth and future opportunities.

Learning a new language, especially in the initial stages, can be challenging and frustrating, but it's important not to give up. The first few months or years may seem almost impossible, but as you progress, the learning curve becomes more rewarding. As the speaker shared, their Russian teacher in college pushed them to learn the alphabet quickly, despite initial resistance. This approach helped them overcome the initial hurdle and eventually master the language. Similarly, with German, it may be hard, but it's a worthwhile challenge. Instead of quitting, consider taking online lessons or seeking help from a teacher. The struggle of learning a new language is a common experience, and it's essential to remember that it's not a reflection of one's abilities or worth. Instead, view it as an opportunity for personal growth and potential future opportunities.

    • Embrace the learning journey despite fears and imperfectionsAcknowledge fears, enjoy the journey, and learn from mistakes while respecting nature and seeking humane solutions

Learning a new language like German, with the intention of using it to fully experience another country, can be a powerful motivator despite the challenges of perfectionism and public speaking fears. It's important to acknowledge these fears and even make mistakes openly in language learning, as it helps reduce the shame and opens up opportunities for growth. Remember, making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process, and no one judges you for it. Instead of focusing on perfection, enjoy the journey of learning and the excitement of using the language in its native country. And if you encounter challenges, such as a bee colony in your new home, consider seeking alternative solutions rather than extermination. Instead of calling an exterminator, try contacting local beekeepers or organizations for assistance in removing the hive humanely. After all, bees play a crucial role in our ecosystem. So, embrace the learning process, open up to new experiences, and remember that imperfection is a part of growth.

    • Beekeeping as a Solution for Unwanted BeehivesBeekeepers can remove unwanted beehives for free or a modest fee, benefiting both parties. Contact local honey farms or beekeepers associations to find help.

Bees are valuable and beekeepers can relocate hives for free or a modest fee, making it an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution when dealing with unwanted beehives. Beekeepers see it as an opportunity to gain a new colony, while homeowners can ensure the safety of their families and property. To find local beekeepers, one can contact honey farms or beekeepers associations, who often have a list of people willing to help remove bee swarms for free. Additionally, a new documentary on Hulu, "Spaceship Earth," is recommended for its intriguing story about a group of hippie scientists who quarantined themselves in a replica of Earth's ecosystem for two years. Overall, these insights provide practical advice and an interesting perspective on beekeeping and unusual experiments.

1043: Andrew Gold | Unveiling the Psychology of Secrets

Are secrets a burden or social glue? Psychology of Secrets author Andrew Gold delves into the evolutionary roots and modern impacts of hiding information.

What We Discuss with Andrew Gold:

    • Keeping secrets can be physically and emotionally painful for humans. This evolved as a mechanism to encourage social cohesion and information sharing within tribal communities.
    • There's a difference between secrets and privacy. What is considered a secret versus private information often depends on societal norms and can change over time.
    • Technology is making it increasingly difficult to keep secrets, with devices like smartwatches and phones potentially revealing information we'd rather keep hidden.
    • Virtue signaling and victim signaling are common behaviors, especially on social media, where people may pretend to hold certain beliefs or experiences for status or attention.
    • Sharing appropriate secrets can increase intimacy and strengthen relationships. By thoughtfully opening up to others, we can build deeper connections and foster trust, leading to more meaningful interactions and a stronger support network.

1042: Sex Trafficking | Skeptical Sunday

1042: Sex Trafficking | Skeptical Sunday

Is sex trafficking really a global crisis or just an overblown conspiracy theory? Andrew Gold reveals truths and misconceptions on this Skeptical Sunday.

Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by On the Edge host Andrew Gold!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss:

    • Sex trafficking knows no borders, and the United States stands out as a particularly active region for this crime. It victimizes individuals regardless of age — notably, more than a fourth of those trafficked are minors.
    • The scale of sex trafficking is difficult to determine accurately, with estimates varying widely. This uncertainty stems from the underground nature of the crime and challenges in data collection.
    • Sex trafficking victims often suffer severe physical and mental health consequences, including STIs, injuries, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse issues. The average lifespan of women in prostitution is tragically short at around 34 years.
    • The issue of sex trafficking is frequently politicized and weaponized, sometimes exaggerated for political gain. However, it remains a serious problem that ruins thousands of lives through organized crime networks and individual traffickers.
    • Education and awareness are key tools in combating sex trafficking. By learning about the issue, discussing it openly, and spreading accurate information, we can help inform potential victims about the dangers and contribute to prevention efforts. Everyone can play a role in this by staying informed and sharing knowledge with others.

1039: Tareena Shakil | An ISIS Recruit's Journey and Escape Part One

How does ISIS radicalize Westerners? Here, Tareena Shakil, who joined and escaped the group, reveals the manipulation behind her own recruitment. [Pt. 1/2]

    What We Discuss:

    • Tareena Shakil, a British woman, traveled to Syria with her young son and joined ISIS in 2014 at age 24 after being groomed online for about six weeks.
    • Tareena's decision to join ISIS was influenced by a combination of factors, including online radicalization, a desire to escape an abusive relationship, and a misguided attempt at religious devotion.
    • While in Syria, Tareena quickly realized she had made a mistake and wanted to leave. She witnessed disturbing events and became increasingly fearful for her and her son's safety.
    • After about eight weeks, Tareena managed to escape ISIS-controlled territory with her son and return to the UK, where she was subsequently arrested and became the first British woman jailed for joining ISIS.
    • Tareena's story highlights the importance of critical thinking, especially when it comes to online interactions and major life decisions. Her experience serves as a powerful reminder to thoroughly research and question information from unfamiliar sources, seek diverse perspectives, and consult trusted friends or family members before making life-altering choices based on online interactions.

    1038: Gold | Skeptical Sunday

    1038: Gold | Skeptical Sunday

Is gold really worth its weight? Michael Regilio digs into the precious metal's glittering past and fool-baiting present on this Skeptical Sunday!

Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by skeptic, comedian, and podcaster Michael Regilio!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • Gold has been valued throughout human history, playing a significant role in economics, trade, and even exploration. It has been used as currency and the basis for monetary systems like the gold standard.
    • The gold standard, which linked the value of currency to gold, was widely adopted but eventually abandoned. The United States officially ended its use of the gold standard in 1971 under President Nixon.
    • There are many scams and misleading practices in the gold market, particularly involving the sale of gold coins. These often target older, more conservative individuals by playing on fears of government overreach and economic instability.
    • The Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings may not always be reliable indicators of a company's trustworthiness, as some businesses can effectively buy high ratings through membership.
    • While it's important to be cautious about gold-related investments, you can still make informed decisions about diversifying your portfolio. Educate yourself on the current gold market, focus on reputable dealers if considering gold purchases, and consult with trusted financial advisors to determine if and how gold might fit into your overall investment strategy.

1036: James Sexton | A Divorce Lawyer's Guide to Lasting Love Part Two

Renowned divorce lawyer James Sexton reveals the secrets to maintaining a healthy marriage and avoiding his office altogether! [Pt. 2/2 — find part 1 here!]

What We Discuss with James Sexton:

    • Many people enter marriage without understanding its legal implications. James Sexton estimates that 95% of people who come to his office are learning about the marriage contract for the first time.
    • Social media has made infidelity much easier and more accessible. James notes that platforms like Facebook and Instagram create opportunities for inappropriate private conversations and flirtations.
    • Prenuptial agreements are becoming increasingly common, especially among younger people in their 20s and 30s. James observes a growing pragmatism and realism in approaching marriage.
    • All marriages end, either through death or divorce. James encourages people to be mindful of endings, as it can make them more appreciative of their current relationships.
    • Being open and honest about your concerns and fears in a relationship can strengthen your bond. Having pragmatic conversations about finances, living arrangements, and potential scenarios doesn't diminish romance — instead, it demonstrates care and foresight for your partner's well-being. Consider having these discussions and potentially creating a prenuptial agreement to ensure you're both on the same page about your future together.

1035: James Sexton | A Divorce Lawyer's Guide to Lasting Love Part One

Renowned divorce lawyer James Sexton reveals the secrets to maintaining a healthy marriage and avoiding his office altogether! [Pt. 1/2]

What We Discuss with James Sexton:

    • Marriage is statistically risky, with a 56% failure rate for first marriages.
    • There's often an economic aspect to relationships that people don't openly discuss.
    • People tend to fall in love quickly but fall out of love slowly.
    • Constantly criticizing or trash-talking your partner, even in jest with friends, can be toxic to a relationship.
    • Preventative maintenance is key to a healthy relationship. Just as you wouldn't wait until your teeth are falling out to go to the dentist, don't wait for major issues to arise in your relationship.

    • The low-fat diet trend, popularized in the 1960s and 1970s, was based on flawed science and cherry-picked data, particularly from the selective research of physiologist Ancel Keys.
    • Removing fat from food products often led to increased sugar and refined carbohydrate content, contributing to the obesity and diabetes epidemics in the United States.
    • The American Heart Association and other institutions have been slow to change their dietary recommendations due to conflicts of interest and corporate donations.
    • Consuming healthy fats is essential for proper bodily functions, and low-fat diets have not been shown to prevent cardiovascular disease or cancer.
    • By educating ourselves on proper nutrition, focusing on whole foods, and reducing refined carbohydrates and processed foods, we can take control of our health and potentially reverse or prevent diet-related maladies like type 2 diabetes.

181: How to Stop Blaming Other People | Deep Dive

Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) joins us for this deep dive into why the impulse for blaming other people is a phenomenon familiar to most of us, and how we can curb it in ourselves without defaulting to always taking the fall when it’s undeserved.

What We Discuss with Gabriel Mizrahi:

    • Why the externalization of blaming other people when you're at fault robs you of being truly in control of your own life.
    • Why the internalization of blaming yourself when you're not at fault is just as toxic as externalization.
    • How you can use the Accountability Spectrum to find an appropriate balance between externalization and internalization.

138: Forget Finding Your Purpose — Do This Instead | Deep Dive

Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) joins us to deep dive into the elusive subject of purpose -- why you’re not finding it as easily as the so-called experts say you should be, and why you should be following meaning to purpose instead of picking a purpose and hoping it’s full of meaning. [Featured image by Smart]

What We Discuss with Gabriel Mizrahi:

    • The difference between purpose and meaning.
    • Why reverse-engineering meaning from purpose is harder (and far less effective) than finding purpose through meaning.
    • What an ER nurse taught Gabriel about the surprising ways meaning can manifest.
    • Why you should be suspicious of what The Cult of Purpose is trying to sell you.
    • The best ways to naturally follow meaning to purpose without forcing an expectation of what that purpose is.

34: Why You Should Be an Amateur | Deep Dive

Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) rejoins us to deep dive into why the fresh eyes of an amateur often spot what the professionals miss, and how we can get some of that so-called beginner's luck to rub off on us no matter how experienced we happen to be.

What We Discuss with Gabriel Mizrahi:

    • The experience paradox: while experience helps us solve problems with precision and focus, it also blinds us to alternative -- sometimes better -- solutions.
    • Experts rely on technique and convention; amateurs are guided by insight and intuition.
    • What Einstein understood about the importance of maintaining an amateur's mindset when tackling problems no expert had yet solved.
    • Why making it through the amateur stage is crucial for growth -- or even beginning -- any endeavor. (If you knew then what you know now, you might not have even gone through the trouble of starting!)
    • How we can take advantage of our expertise without losing the beginner's amateur insight.
    • And much more...

    • Why we all compare ourselves to others and what purpose this comparison serves.
    • Why we tend to compare ourselves to people who are similar to us (often to the detriment of our relationships).
