#369 - Mark Williams-Thomas - The Story Of Exposing Jimmy Savile

    enSeptember 09, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • Investigative journalism's role in bringing criminals to justiceInvestigative journalism exerts public pressure leading to police investigations and court proceedings, often uncovering information that people wouldn't share with the police, making journalists an invaluable asset in the pursuit of justice.

Investigative journalism plays a crucial role in bringing criminals to justice. Mark Williams Thomas, an investigative journalist, author, and former police detective, shared his experiences of investigating high-profile cases, including the infamous Jimmy Savile scandal. He explained how documentaries can create public pressure that leads to police investigations and eventual court proceedings. As a former detective, Mark applies the same ethical and moral approach to his investigative journalism, but without the power of arrest. Instead, he relies on his skills and sources to gather information and help those who have exhausted other options. Mark's work often uncovers information that people wouldn't share with the police, making him an invaluable asset in the pursuit of justice. Despite the limitations of his role, Mark's focus is always on helping people and providing realistic solutions. His investigations are thorough and successful, and he is honest with clients when he cannot help them. Overall, Mark's work highlights the importance of investigative journalism in bringing criminals to justice and providing a voice for those who have been overlooked by traditional law enforcement.

    • Private investigator's unique approach leads to resultsA private investigator's unique methods and dedication can uncover information and solve cases that law enforcement may not be able to.

A private investigator's unique approach and dedication to a case can yield results that surpass those of law enforcement agencies, despite their limitations in resources and legal restrictions. The use of less intrusive methods, such as surveillance, decoy operations, and tracking devices, can provide valuable intelligence. The Jimmy Savile case serves as an example of how a private investigator's tenacity and persistence led to uncovering a major scandal, despite initial roadblocks. The role of a private investigator is to employ proportionate techniques to gather information, prioritize cases, and make a difference where law enforcement may not be able to.

    • A turning point in handling power abuse casesThe Jimmy Saville scandal led to an increase in reported cases and arrests of offenders, marking a significant shift in attitudes towards power abuse and holding offenders accountable.

The exposure of Jimmy Saville's abuse led to a significant shift in attitudes towards handling cases of power abuse, making it clear that no one, not even high-profile individuals, was untouchable. This tidal shift resulted in an increase in reported cases and arrests of offenders in various sectors, including education and childcare. The investigation into Saville's case faced numerous challenges, including finding victims willing to come forward, gaining the support of authorities, and dealing with the obstacles presented by Saville's media persona. Despite these challenges, the broadcast of the program marked a turning point in handling cases of power abuse, sending a clear message that offenders could be held accountable for their actions.

    • Jimmy Savile investigation hindered by power and influenceThorough investigations are crucial for justice, but power and influence can hinder progress. Victims of abuse face risks in coming forward, while investigative journalists may face personal and professional risks.

The investigation into the sexual abuse allegations against Jimmy Savile was hindered by various factors, including Savile's power and influence even after his death, and the mistakes made by the police and Crown Prosecution Service. The victims of Savile's abuse faced significant risks in coming forward, while the investigative journalist who eventually brought the story to light faced personal and professional risks. Despite allegations being made to the police years before, no progress was made in the investigation, and it was ultimately the media that brought the issue to public attention. The case highlights the importance of thorough investigations and the potential impact of power and influence on the pursuit of justice.

    • Jim Savile's Power and Influence Enabled Decades of AbuseJim Savile's charisma and power allowed him to manipulate situations and evade investigations, enabling decades of abuse against women of all ages.

Jim Savile's broad range of offending behavior against women of all ages, from young children to older women, was enabled by his immense power and influence. His ability to manipulate situations and deceive people allowed him to evade challenges and investigations for decades, making him nearly untouchable. The complexity of his offenses and his charisma led many to overlook or ignore the signs of his inappropriate behavior. Despite allegations of abuse against males, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that he targeted them. Ultimately, Savile's power and influence allowed him to continue offending for a long time, with many people turning a blind eye or being complicit in his actions.

    • The aftermath of Jimmy Savile scandal goes beyond just his resignation500 victims have come forward, highlighting Savile's extensive reach, but accountability for enablers remains unresolved

The aftermath of the Jimmy Savile scandal at the BBC goes beyond just the resignation of the perpetrator. There are likely more people involved who knew about his inappropriate behavior and failed to act. The issue of holding these individuals accountable remains unresolved, with ongoing television programs focusing more on Savile's offenses rather than those who enabled him. An estimated 500 victims have come forward, highlighting the extensive reach of Savile's power and access. Even those close to the situation, like Louis Theroux, were not immune to being deceived by Savile's charisma. Until there is a commitment to making a program that focuses on holding enablers accountable, the issue remains unresolved.

    • Exposing the Truth with Louis Theroux's Unique StyleLouis Theroux's unique reporting style can effectively expose the truth, but it comes with challenges in identifying offenders' true nature, especially when they use their affability as a defense.

The unique reporting style of Louis Theroux, which involves a candid and fly-on-the-wall approach, can be effective in exposing the truth, but it also comes with its challenges. Jimmy Savile, an eccentric individual, made it difficult for people to distinguish between his character and the truth due to his unusual behavior. Savile's global personality served as a smokescreen, making it hard to identify predatory behavior. Conversely, individuals like Andrew Cuomo, who have also used their affability and touchiness as defenses, may not be as difficult to read if one has the necessary knowledge and experience to identify grooming tactics. Ultimately, understanding how offenders operate and having the ability to ask difficult questions are crucial in uncovering the truth.

    • Predators and their extensive backlogs of mediaPredators have manipulated situations to avoid accountability for decades, but societal shifts and victim empowerment have led to increased reporting and action against them. Lack of consent is a serious offense with severe consequences, not all offenders are held accountable.

Predators, whether their crimes were committed decades ago or more recently, can have extensive backlogs of media and manipulate situations to avoid accountability for their actions, which include sexual assault and abuse, particularly against children. The acceptance and normalization of such behavior in the past has led to a significant number of offenders going unpunished. However, the shift in societal attitudes towards these crimes and the empowerment of victims to speak out has resulted in increased reporting and action against offenders. It's important to remember that the nature of these offenses, regardless of when they occurred, is about lack of consent, and the seriousness of the consequences cannot be understated. While it's reassuring that many offenders believe they will eventually be caught, the reality is that not all are held accountable for their crimes. The unsolved murders in the country are equally disturbing as they involve taking someone's life.

    • Unsolved Crimes: The Determination to Bring JusticeInvestigator's dedication to solving unsolved crimes, sharing examples of the disappearance of Nicola Payne and the murder of two young boys, and new developments in the latter case, while acknowledging the alarming number of unsolved murders and emphasizing the importance of truth and justice.

Despite compelling evidence, some unsolved crimes remain unresolved due to insufficient proof for prosecution. The speaker, a true crime investigator, shared her experiences with two such cases: the disappearance of Nicola Payne in Coventry in 1991 and the murder of two young boys in Liverpool in the 1980s. She expressed her determination to bring justice to these cases and revealed new developments in the latter. However, she also highlighted the alarming number of unsolved murders, sharing examples of horrific cases where offenders have never been caught. The speaker's passion for justice drives her to continue her work, and she is currently releasing a podcast about a new case involving Lee Boxall, whom she believes is responsible for a murder. She emphasized the importance of upholding the truth and the integrity of the judicial system, even when it means releasing information posthumously.

    • Misconceptions and incorrect assumptions can lead to miscarriages of justiceAppearances can be deceiving, thorough investigations and open-mindedness are crucial to ensure justice is served accurately.

Misconceptions and incorrect assumptions can lead to miscarriages of justice. The case of Harmanhim Dasangiri, a woman who was wrongly convicted of murder due to the belief that her actions looked like those of a murderer, serves as a stark reminder of this. Despite all evidence pointing to suicide, she was jailed based on the analogy "if it looks like a duck, it quacks like a duck, it's a duck." However, upon further investigation and examination, it was found that there was no evidence of murder and that her actions could have been consistent with suicide. This misidentification of facts led to years of wrongful imprisonment. It's important to remember that appearances can be deceiving, and thorough investigations and open-mindedness are crucial in ensuring justice is served accurately.

    • Confirmation bias in criminal investigationsPreconceived ideas can distort interpretation of evidence, potentially leading to miscarriage of justice

The way senior investigating officers form hypotheses in criminal investigations can sometimes lead them down the wrong path. They may interpret evidence to fit their preconceived ideas, disregarding other possibilities. This phenomenon, known as confirmation bias, can result in a miscarriage of justice. The BBC series "Line of Duty" provides an accurate portrayal of police work, but it's essential to remember that there is poetic license involved. Police corruption, while less prevalent than in the past, still exists, and organized crime can influence policing in some countries. The importance of eliminating corrupt officers and addressing systemic issues in law enforcement remains a crucial aspect of maintaining justice.

    • Former police officer shares stories of past corruption in UK police forceDespite past corruption issues, the UK police force remains committed to upholding the law. Former officer discusses psychopathy and psychosis, providing insights into criminal behavior and law enforcement.

Corruption in the UK police force in the past was significant and frightening, but progress has been made since then. The speaker, who is a former police officer, shared stories of seniority-based car pick-ups and buying one's way out of arrests in other countries, but emphasized that the UK police force's commitment to upholding the law is crucial. The speaker also praised a Netflix documentary, "Murder Next Door," and upcoming Channel 5 program about the Yorkshire Ripper, and shared his assessment that Chris Watts, a subject of the documentary, was a psychopath due to his ability to compartmentalize and commit heinous acts calmly. The speaker also mentioned his discovery that Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, was actually a psychopath, not a schizophrenic, despite initial misdiagnosis. Overall, the speaker's reflections on past corruption and the importance of upholding the law, as well as his analysis of psychopathy and psychosis, provide valuable insights into criminal behavior and the role of law enforcement.

    • Media's impact on true crime investigationsMedia can influence societal pressure and galvanize attention towards cases, potentially contributing to ongoing investigations and overturning wrongful convictions.

True crime documentaries, while entertaining, can have significant real-world impacts on ongoing investigations. The discussion highlighted the Making a Murderer case, where the involvement of the media led to new evidence being discovered and investigations being reopened. The power of media in influencing societal pressure and galvanizing attention towards cases is immense. The investigator in the conversation emphasized that his programs not only serve as entertainment but also have a valuable purpose in contributing to ongoing investigations and potentially overturning wrongful convictions. The latest example being the case of Jesse Earl in series 2, where they are currently awaiting a high court hearing to overturn the conviction and potentially collect DNA evidence from the body. This is a rare occurrence and underscores the importance of media involvement in criminal investigations.

    • Crime scene investigator Mark Williams Thomas shares emotional challenges of his workCrime scene investigator Mark Williams Thomas faces emotional toll from analyzing DNA evidence to solve cases but remains dedicated to his work, encouraging followers to check out his podcast and upcoming investigations.

Crime scene investigator Mark Williams Thomas's work involves analyzing DNA evidence to solve unsolved cases, which can be emotionally taxing. He shared that he's experienced mental health challenges as a result of taking on other people's pain and sadness. Despite the challenges, Mark is passionate about his work and can't imagine doing anything else. He encourages those interested in his investigations to follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, and to check out his podcast, "The Detective," and upcoming investigations, including the Yorkshire Ripper tapes and the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Mark's dedication to his work and commitment to bringing closure to families is truly inspiring. It's clear that his work has a purpose, even if it comes with a significant emotional cost.

    The Benefit of the Doubt

    The Benefit of the Doubt
When someone says something hurtful to you, it is wise to give them the benefit of the doubt. What does that mean? It means ask yourself, “Do I firmly believe that this is a person of good will?” If so, is there anything that can help you better understand their behavior? Give them the benefit of the doubt that they are just tired, or “hangry”, or having a bad day for some reason. Especially in marital relationships, think of how many times your spouse has said hurtful things to you, while you knew that they still loved you. This is not to excuse hurtful behavior, and not a reason to tolerate being treated poorly, or to endure any kind of abuse. In many cases a person’s actions do reveal their heart. So we’re not talking about those cases. We’re not talking about people who manipulate others intentionally, and those who just willfully do evil. We’re talking about when people of good will just have a bad moment, or momentarily let their vain side get the best of them. The way we respond to an enemy and the way we respond to a friend is going to be different. Decide which one hurt you, and respond accordingly. www.ascensionpress.com/theFrMikeSchmitzPodcast
