#385 - Gurwinder Bhogal - 15 Mental Models To Understand Psychology

    enOctober 16, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • Social media can skew our perception of realityThe 'law of very large numbers' on social media can make rare events seem more common, creating a distorted perspective on the world

Our perception of reality can be skewed by the information we consume online, particularly on social media platforms like Twitter. Gwynda Bogle, a programmer and writer, discussed the concept of the "law of very large numbers" during a fascinating Twitter thread, which explored how any pattern can be observed given a wide enough dataset. This phenomenon leads to the observation of rare and surprising events more frequently than in reality, creating a distorted perspective. This can manifest in various ways, such as seeing more instances of racism or corporate greed, depending on one's beliefs. In essence, social media can make the world seem crazier than it actually is, and it's essential to be aware of this bias to maintain a balanced perspective. Gwynda's insightful Twitter threads, which often go viral, are a testament to the power of understanding human psychology in the digital age. The upcoming Modern Wisdom Locals community aims to provide a platform for discussing such topics further and fostering meaningful conversations.

    • Skewed perception of reality from social mediaBe mindful of consuming only biased or extreme content, seek diverse perspectives, and focus on positive information to maintain a balanced view of the world.

Our exposure to information, particularly on social media, can create a skewed perception of reality. If we only consume content that aligns with our beliefs or confirms our biases, we risk being exposed to the extremes and missing out on the majority of well-meaning individuals. This can lead to a sense of threat and militancy, driving us further to the extremes. Additionally, our brains are wired to focus more on negative information due to the negativity bias, which can leave us feeling depressed and disconnected. It's important to be aware of this phenomenon and make a conscious effort to seek out diverse perspectives and positive information to maintain a balanced view of the world.

    • The Negative Impact of Negative Comments on Mental Health and the Peter PrincipleNegative comments can harm mental health, the Peter Principle can lead to incompetence in roles, and the 'Golden Hammer' phenomenon can result in narrow solutions, emphasizing the importance of context and balance.

Our obsession with constant validation and the negative impact of one negative comment can have detrimental effects on mental health. The importance of validation is crucial, but it can be easily destroyed by a single negative comment, leading to depression and anxiety. The Peter Principle, which states that people are promoted until they reach their level of incompetence, is a common phenomenon in businesses and governments. This results in a world filled with people who are not effective in their roles. The desire for growth and promotion can lead to the loss of valuable employees and the promotion of incompetent individuals. The "Golden Hammer" phenomenon, where intellectuals become so enamored with their ideas that they apply them to everything, can lead to a narrow focus and potentially ineffective solutions. It's essential to remember the limitations and contexts of each concept and not to apply them indiscriminately.

    • Behavior of linking ideas to work or ideology excessivelyExcessive linking of ideas to work or ideology can create a barrier to meaningful dialogue, while false information spreads easily on social media due to the energy required to refute it, leading to a skewed representation of intelligence online.

Some people on social media, particularly those who have recently written a book or hold strong beliefs, may excessively link their ideas to their work or ideology as a way to sell their book or reinforce their in-group status. This behavior, known as shibboleths, can create an impression of intellectual superiority and exclusivity, making it difficult for outsiders to engage in meaningful dialogue. Additionally, Brandolini's law, or the bullshit asymmetry principle, states that it takes more energy to refute false information than to produce it. As a result, social media platforms are often filled with unrefuted bullshit, leading to a false impression that people are less intelligent than they actually are. In reality, the majority of social media content is generated by a small percentage of users, and the most thoughtful and intelligent voices may be underrepresented due to their infrequent posting.

    • Effectively managing Twitter feed requires selective following and curationSelectively follow and curate Twitter feeds for a more enjoyable and thought-provoking experience. Understand the Tocqueville paradox to navigate social media complexities and foster a positive online experience.

Effectively managing your Twitter feed requires careful curation. Be selective about who you follow and don't hesitate to block or mute accounts that post low-information density or irrelevant content. This approach can help transform Twitter from a chaotic platform into a more enjoyable and thought-provoking digital experience. Another important concept is the Tocqueville paradox, which explains how as living standards rise, people's expectations of society also increase, potentially leading to disaffection and populist uprisings. This phenomenon can be observed in the expanding definitions of terms like misogyny and racism, which can make it seem as though these issues are more prevalent than they once were. In essence, understanding and applying these principles can help users navigate the complexities of social media and foster a more positive and informed online experience.

    • The Top Wheel Paradox: Our Changing Perception of Social IssuesOur perception of social issues can be influenced by expanding definitions, leading to a distorted view of reality. Adapting to evolving problem-solving approaches is crucial for accurate understanding.

Our perception of social issues can be skewed due to the expanding definitions of terms like misogyny, racism, and poverty. This phenomenon, known as the Top Wheel Paradox, can make it seem like the world is getting worse when it's actually improving. For instance, Hillary Clinton used the concept of misogyny to her advantage during her presidential campaign, implying that criticism was rooted in her gender. Similarly, the definition of racism has expanded to include microaggressions and systemic issues, leading to an increase in perceived instances. Absolute poverty has decreased significantly over time, but the concept of relative poverty, which measures wealth inequality, has gained popularity. This shift in definitions can create a distorted view of reality, leading some to believe the world is getting worse rather than better. As society progresses and access to technology and wealth increases, it's crucial to adapt our problem-solving approach to match the evolving rule set. The Top Wheel Paradox is an important reminder that progress isn't always linear and that the way we define and approach problems can have a significant impact on our perception of the world.

    • The top bill paradox and the dangers of pessimismBe mindful of tribal mentalities and the spread of divisive ideas, and strive for accurate information and constructive dialogue to promote understanding and progress.

While it's important to strive for a better world and address issues like wealth inequality and social injustice, the top bill paradox warns us against the dangers of pessimism and the spread of divisive ideas. The human brain is wired for tribal mentalities, and we often process information based on how it benefits our tribe or status rather than its truth value. This can lead to polarization and the spread of ideas that may not be factually accurate but are effective at signaling commitment to a particular group. It's crucial to be aware of this tendency and make an effort to seek out accurate information and engage in constructive dialogue to promote understanding and progress.

    • Forming online tribes and prioritizing group benefit over truthSocial media use can lead to polarization, misinformation, and the spread of extreme or inaccurate ideas through the formation of online communities prioritizing group benefit over objective truth, resulting in tactics like nut picking, straw manning, and Bulverism.

Our use of social media has led us to form online communities, or "tribes," that prioritize the benefit to our group over objective truth. This can result in polarization, misinformation, and the spread of extreme or inaccurate ideas. People often engage in tactics like nut picking and straw manning to demonize opposing tribes, and may even share false information as a commitment device or tribal signal. The focus is not on truth, but rather on how ideas align with our tribes and how they impact our standing within them. Bulverism, the practice of assuming an opponent is wrong and justifying that assumption through appeals to their character or motives, is also common in social media debates. These behaviors are rooted in our tribal instincts and can significantly contribute to the culture war.

    • Focusing on the person rather than the argument in online discussionsOnline discussions can be unproductive due to focusing on the person rather than the argument, influenced by platform format, use of generalizations, and manipulation of goals.

When engaging in debates or discussions, particularly on platforms like Twitter, people often focus on the person rather than the argument, leading to a lack of productive conversation. This behavior is influenced by the format of the platform, which makes it difficult to have in-depth debates. Additionally, people tend to take shortcuts and use generalizations, which can lead to misunderstandings and unproductive exchanges. Furthermore, when a measure becomes a goal, it can be manipulated or gamed, leading to inaccurate or misleading results. Therefore, it's important to approach online discussions with a mindset of understanding and openness, and to focus on the substance of the argument rather than the person making it. Additionally, it's crucial to recognize the limitations of different platforms and to adjust our communication style accordingly. Overall, the key is to strive for clear and concise communication, while also being aware of the potential for misunderstandings and manipulation.

    • People trust individuals over abstract ideasPeople are more likely to be influenced by trustworthy individuals than abstract concepts. This shortcut to understanding people as symbols or archetypes makes it easier for our brains to process information and delegate responsibility.

People are more likely to be influenced by individuals they perceive as trustworthy rather than abstract ideas or concepts. This was illustrated in the discussion about an ebook scam that aimed to gain access to people's emails by promising a lottery winning formula, but instead delivered empty content. This phenomenon was also seen in the context of social media, where followers and credibility are often manipulated, leading to an inversion of the original concept. The observation was further extended to politics, where people tend to support politicians based on their personality rather than their policies due to the complexity and time required to understand them. This shortcut to understanding people as symbols or archetypes makes it easier for our brains to process information and delegate responsibility. The messiah effect, a term coined by the speaker, refers to this general truth that people believe in individuals who embody their ideals, rather than the ideals themselves.

    • People are drawn to other people over ideas or thingsUnderstanding human tendencies to emulate others and fear restriction can improve communication and information sharing.

People tend to be more drawn to and passionate about other people rather than ideas or things. This is because we learn and improve ourselves by emulating others, and it's only natural for us to navigate towards people rather than abstract concepts. Furthermore, reactance theory suggests that when people are restricted from expressing a point of view or pressured to adopt a different one, they may react by believing their original point of view even more strongly. This desire for freedom and the fear of being stifled can lead people to cling even more tightly to their beliefs, even if they're considered controversial or false. Ultimately, understanding these human tendencies can help us approach communication and information sharing in a more effective and empathetic way.

    • Censorship fuels conspiracy theoriesEfforts to silence certain viewpoints can inadvertently strengthen them, creating a self-reinforcing cycle. The removal of Parler following the Capitol riots is cited as an example.

Efforts to censor or silence certain viewpoints can actually fuel the spread of conspiracy theories. The speaker argues that this is because those being censored perceive it as confirmation of their beliefs, creating a self-reinforcing cycle. The example given is the social media app Parler, which was taken offline following the January 6th Capitol riots. Instead of stopping the spread of conspiracy theories, the speaker notes that this led to even more anger and confirmation bias among those using the app. The speaker also acknowledges that in some cases, taking out individual speakers with large followings can be effective, but notes that this is not always the case and can have unintended consequences, such as creating a martyr effect or inciting violence.

    • Decentralization of the internet through Web 3.0 reduces censorship but creates a digital divideWeb 3.0's decentralization reduces censorship, but a digital divide may emerge, potentially leading to disparities in online communication

The decentralization of the internet through Web 3.0 will significantly reduce censorship and the power of gatekeepers, allowing individuals to express their views freely without fear of being "canceled" or having their livelihoods affected. However, there are concerns that a digital divide may emerge between those who can use Web 3.0 and those who cannot, potentially leading to disparities in online communication. Additionally, the effectiveness of fact-checking organizations in regulating misinformation is questionable, as they are often biased and their methods are not foolproof. Therefore, the transition to Web 3.0 and the reduction of censorship could have both positive and negative implications for online discourse.

    • Bias in fact-checking can impact truthHeavy ideological bias of fact-checkers can lead to inaccuracies and suppression of info, impacting natural adaptive processes and promoting over-reliance on centralized sources. Encourage critical thinking and balanced info dissemination.

The heavy ideological bias of fact-checkers in Silicon Valley can lead to inaccuracies and the suppression of information. This can interfere with natural adaptive processes, making people overly reliant on these organizations to determine truth and falsity. Furthermore, the emergence of Web 3 technology could create a divide between those who are reliant on centralized, fact-checked information and those who are able to independently discern truth. This divide could lead to disparities and a potential loss of critical thinking skills for those who are overly reliant on centralized sources. It's important to promote a balanced approach to information dissemination and encourage individuals to think critically and independently.

    • Bifurcated Culture with Web 3 TechnologyWeb 3 technology could widen cultural divides if it doesn't promote egalitarian access to information.

The adoption of Web 3 technology could lead to a bifurcated culture where two distinct groups emerge, each with their own sources of information and cultural assumptions. This phenomenon is already evident in the divide between liberal and conservative groups. If Web 3 doesn't become truly egalitarian, it could exacerbate these divisions. Censorship is not the solution to promoting truth, as it only makes people more reliant on others for information. Instead, we should adopt a skeptical approach, such as Hitchens' Razor, which states that what cannot be proven should be dismissed. This approach helps filter out unnecessary beliefs and keeps our minds focused on reality.

    • Communication and ethical frameworks for productive disagreementsUsing shared ethical frameworks, critical thinking tools, and being mindful of the focusing illusion can lead to more productive and meaningful conversations.

Effective communication and productive disagreements require a shared ethical framework. Without it, conversations can fall apart, leading to wasted time and unproductive debates. The Hitchens Razor is a useful tool to filter out weak arguments and save time. Furthermore, the mind's focusing illusion can lead individuals to obsess over specific issues, inflating their importance and leading to extremism. The example of Tommy Robinson illustrates this phenomenon, where his initial concerns about Islamic extremism grew into an all-consuming obsession. In essence, understanding the importance of shared ethical frameworks, using critical thinking tools like the Hitchens Razor, and being aware of the focusing illusion can lead to more productive and meaningful conversations.

    • Understanding the Dunning-Kruger effect and its impact on our thinkingRecognize the Dunning-Kruger effect's influence on our biases, seek diverse perspectives, and challenge our beliefs to expand our understanding

The human mind has limitations in understanding complex systems and recognizing its own ignorance. This can lead to a focusing illusion, where individuals become overly fixated on one aspect, such as a belief or concept, to the detriment of understanding the bigger picture. The Dunning-Kruger effect exacerbates this issue, as those who are less aware of their own limitations are less likely to seek out new information or challenge their beliefs. This can result in midwit-like behavior, where individuals remain stuck in their comfort zones and fail to recognize the need for self-improvement. To combat these cognitive biases, it's essential to increase awareness of the Dunning-Kruger effect and other biases, as well as the importance of seeking out diverse perspectives and challenging one's own beliefs. By doing so, individuals can broaden their understanding and avoid being blinded by their focus on specific aspects of the world.

    • Understanding and Mitigating BiasesBeing aware of our biases, including the bias towards physical attractiveness, is crucial for making unbiased judgments and decisions. Considering the competence of individuals who have overcome similar biases can help mitigate their impact.

Our biases, including the bias towards physical attractiveness, can impact our judgments and decision-making, leading to the Dunning-Kruger effect. However, being aware of these biases is a step towards mitigating their impact. One way to do this is by considering the competence of individuals who have overcome similar biases. For instance, hiring a less attractive candidate despite their looks could indicate their greater competence. To stay updated on these concepts and learn more in-depth, follow Gaurav S. Bhogal on Twitter (@g_s_bhogal) and look out for his upcoming Substack. Bhogal plans to explore these topics further through essays. Sam Gardel

    Sam Gardel

Sam Gardel is an Electrician from Brisbane and one-time back-rower for the Italian Azzurri during the 2013 Rugby league world cup. Gardy’s story is a compelling one and one that many young trade business owners would be able to relate to. As a young electrician, Sam had the opportunity to have a crack at a football career, however not believing that his heart was fully in it, made the choice to focus on growing his prospering electrical business. However, after investing heavily into his team and business, everything was pulled out from under him leaving him in financial distress.

In the podcast, Sam opens up to us about what happened at the time that his first business came crashing down, and the road he took in rebuilding what he had started. We chat about the hard work and sacrifices made to get back up on his feet, and the challenges that he faced during that process including turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms to blow of steam, justified by the long hours he was working. Within this story is also the individual Journey that Sam has been on, putting in the work to take better care of his mind and body which has not only had a positive impact on his business, but as the leader in his own business, has flowed on through his team as well.

This is an awesome yarn about the power of leading by example, with a couple of stories about school boy sport and how he ended up running on for Italy.
