    47. Optimizing Your Brain with Dr. Austin Perlmutter

    enJune 04, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Brain HealthPrioritizing brain health through food, sleep, psychedelics, and certain pharmaceuticals can lead to better sleep, increased energy, improved immune function, and enhanced emotional well-being and decision-making abilities.

Our brains are not designed for constant happiness, but rather for survival. Modern society and consumerism can negatively impact our brain health. Doctor Austin Perlmutter, a board certified internal medicine physician and New York Times bestselling author, emphasizes the importance of optimizing brain health through various means, including food, sleep, psychedelics, and certain pharmaceuticals. He encourages us to prioritize brain health as it significantly impacts every aspect of our lives, from physical health to emotional well-being and decision-making abilities. By investing in brain health, we can experience better sleep, increased energy, improved immune function, and even enhanced sexual experiences. Doctor Perlmutter's perspective underscores the significance of prioritizing brain health and taking proactive steps to optimize it.

    • Mental and brain healthNeglecting mental and brain health can lead to severe issues, but addressing external factors like food and air quality can improve brain health and prevent negative impacts

Taking care of our mental and brain health should not be an afterthought, but a priority. We often neglect it until we face severe issues, such as depression, which require external interventions like medication. However, our brains are the foundation of our life experiences, and it's crucial to address the external factors that can negatively impact it. These factors include the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the information we consume. For instance, the quality of food we eat can change our microbiome, brain structure, and neurochemical pathways. Air fresheners, which are often found in the grocery store, emit toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can lead to health issues like Alzheimer's, depression, and worse cognition. These VOCs can react with other molecules in the environment, creating even more harmful byproducts. Therefore, it's essential to be aware of these hidden dangers and make conscious choices to minimize our exposure to them. Instead of relying on external solutions, we should focus on activating our internal pharmacy by making healthier choices in our daily lives.

    • Media and Air FreshenersReducing media consumption and avoiding air fresheners, including essential oils, can improve brain health by allowing time for healthy activities and reducing exposure to harmful substances.

The messages and substances we take in from our external environment, particularly through media and air fresheners, significantly impact our brain health. The media industry, with its incentive to keep our eyes glued to screens, often comes at the cost of missed opportunities for healthy activities like exercise, socializing, and spending time in nature. Air fresheners, including essential oils, can generate air pollution and introduce harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into our environment. To optimize brain function and protect brain health, consider reducing media consumption and avoiding air fresheners. Instead, engage in activities that stretch and exercise the brain, such as learning new things, socializing, and spending time in nature. Additionally, opt for natural alternatives to air fresheners, such as boiling herbs and spices on the stove. Remember, every moment shapes our brains, and making conscious choices about what we take in can lead to better overall health and well-being.

    • Brain HealthLearning new things, trying new experiences, and practicing meditation improve brain function and create a more solid foundation for the future, while daily habits like meditation and healthy eating are the best predictors of brain health.

Taking care of your brain health is crucial for living a meaningful, happy, and exciting life. The environment can negatively impact your brain, leading to conditions like depression, stress, and Alzheimer's. To keep your brain strong, it's essential to stretch it by learning new things, trying new experiences, and even practicing meditation. These activities not only improve brain function in the present but also create a more solid partner for the future. Meditation, in particular, is a form of brain exercise that decreases stress and changes the neural networks, leading to better brain health. Establishing daily habits, such as meditation and healthy eating, is the best predictor of brain health and can significantly impact your well-being in the long run.

    • Brain health and stressChronic stress can negatively impact brain health, leading to insulin resistance, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and impaired decision making. Meditation can help reconnect the brain regions affected by stress and improve mental health.

Chronic stress, whether it's psychological or physical, triggers a cascade of molecules in the body, leading to the production of cortisol and other stress hormones. These hormones prepare the body for a fight or flight response, but in today's world, where most stressors don't pose an immediate threat to our lives, this response is perpetual. Over time, this can lead to negative health consequences, including insulin resistance, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. Additionally, high cortisol levels can disrupt the connection between the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala, impairing our ability to make rational decisions and regulate emotions. Meditation can help reconnect these regions of the brain and reduce stress, leading to better mental health and adaptation to various situations. Ultimately, taking care of our brain health by managing stress is crucial for overall well-being and achieving our goals in life.

    • Brain care, well-beingPrioritize self-care and wellness for individuals and businesses, including optimizing work conditions, sleep, nutrition, exercise, and personal growth through meditation, to prevent burnout, improve productivity, and enhance overall quality of life.

Taking care of your most valuable asset - your brain and overall well-being - should be a priority, especially for business owners or managers. This includes optimizing work conditions for employees, focusing on the basics like sleep, proper nutrition, and exercise, and investing in personal growth through practices like meditation. The speaker emphasizes that these actions not only benefit individuals but also contribute to the success of the business. By prioritizing self-care and wellness, we can prevent burnout, improve productivity, and enhance overall quality of life. The speaker also encourages listeners to consider the long-term benefits of these practices, rather than seeking quick fixes that may not deliver sustainable results.

    • Healthcare professionals' health neglectHealthcare professionals often neglect their own health due to work demands, leading to negative impacts on their ability to care for others, resulting from societal norms and incentives prioritizing profit over health. To improve, we must recognize the systemic challenges and work towards a more holistic and sustainable approach.

The people responsible for our health and wellbeing, including healthcare professionals, are often neglecting their own health due to the demands of their profession. This can lead to a vicious cycle of stress, poor sleep, unhealthy food, and lack of nature and social connections, which can in turn negatively impact their ability to care for others. This situation is a result of a complex interplay of factors, including the incentives of corporations and the societal norms that prioritize profit over health. However, it's important to note that we can also "wash our brains" by making conscious choices to eliminate unhealthy habits and connect with supportive communities. Ultimately, the key to improving our health and wellbeing lies in recognizing the systemic challenges we face and working together to create a more holistic and sustainable approach to health and happiness.

    • Psychedelics and Well-beingPsychedelics can help us reevaluate priorities, increase open-mindedness, connect with others and nature, and are safer than society perceives for mental health conditions.

Our modern world optimizes for things other than our happiness and well-being, leading us to prioritize surrogates like wealth, social media, and constant consumption over our fundamental needs to stay alive and feel connected. Psychedelics can provide pattern interrupts, allowing us to reevaluate our priorities and reconnect with the bigger picture. They have been shown to increase open-mindedness and connectivity with others and nature. However, society's perception of psychedelics as destructive to the brain is misguided, and they are actually some of the safest pharmaceuticals for mental health conditions. By understanding the true benefits of psychedelics and prioritizing our well-being, we can make meaningful connections and live more fulfilling lives.

    • Psychedelics and mental health benefitsPsychedelics have shown promising mental health benefits in controlled studies, particularly for people with treatment-resistant conditions, and society's reluctance to decriminalize and normalize these substances is misguided given the potential benefits and relatively low risks compared to other commonly used substances

Despite the stigma surrounding psychedelics, these substances have shown promising mental health benefits in controlled studies, particularly for people with treatment-resistant conditions like PTSD and depression. The speaker argues that our society's reluctance to decriminalize and normalize these substances is misguided, given the potential benefits and the relative safety compared to other commonly used substances like cigarettes and alcohol. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of individuals having opportunities to explore new perspectives and question societal norms, which can lead to personal growth and happiness. While there are risks associated with psychedelics, they are generally low compared to other commonly used substances, and the benefits may outweigh the risks for some individuals. The speaker encourages an open-minded and evidence-based approach to understanding these substances and their potential therapeutic uses.

    • Food and Health InterplayShift focus from macros and micros to food, soil, microbiomes, and phytochemicals for optimal health; phytochemicals like polyphenols can reprogram epigenetic expression and have long-term health benefits

Our approach to food and health should shift from focusing solely on macronutrients and micronutrients to considering the complex interplay between food, soil, microbiomes, and the phytochemicals they contain. These compounds, particularly polyphenols, can have enduring effects on our health by reprogramming epigenetic expression. Psychedelics, like psilocybin, offer a compelling analogy, as they too have long-term impacts on brain health. However, unlike psychedelics, we can access these benefits daily through our food choices. By recognizing the importance of healthy soil and the role it plays in producing nutrient-dense plants, we can optimize our health and bridge the gap between food and medicine.

    • Polyphenols and EpigeneticsPolyphenols from certain plants can influence our epigenetic expression, providing resilience to stress, creating a healthy microbiome, and potentially reprogramming our genes, blurring the lines between nature and nurture.

The nutrients called polyphenols, found in certain plants, act as chemical signals that influence our epigenetic expression, connecting us to the soil, microbes, and other organisms. Polyphenols provide resilience to stress and help create a healthy microbiome. They also modify our connection to the environment and may explain why conventional farming practices and foods lacking these nutrients can impact our health. Epigenetics refers to the study of how changes in our environment can alter the way our DNA is used, blurring the lines between nature and nurture. These nutrients, such as those found in Himalayan tartary buckwheat, can reprogram our epigenetic response and even slow down aging. In essence, what we eat directly impacts our health in the present and can influence the genes we pass down to future generations.

    • Childhood experiences and epigeneticsChildhood experiences can impact our health and wellbeing later in life through epigenetic changes, which can influence DNA expression and immune system response. Daily choices and experiences can also impact neural connections in the brain.

Our experiences, particularly those in childhood, can significantly impact our health and wellbeing later in life through epigenetic changes. These changes can influence our DNA expression and immune system response. Traumatic experiences, for instance, may leave "tags" on our DNA that certain interventions, like MDMA, may be able to remove. MDMA, known as the "love hormone," could potentially counteract the effects of trauma by changing the way our DNA is used. Additionally, our daily choices and experiences can influence the strength and number of neural connections in our brains, making them more or less likely to form and strengthen. The brain, like the rest of our bodies, is in a constant state of flux, and these changes offer possibilities for targeted, personalized interventions and treatments.

    • Epigenetics and PolyphenolsEpigenetics allows for genetic expression changes, and polyphenols from colorful fruits/veggies, herbs/spices, coffee, tea, and minimizing processed foods can contribute to positive changes.

Our genes are not set in stone, and we have the power to make significant changes to our genetic expression through epigenetics. This means that even traits passed down through generations may not be as fixed as we once thought. Epigenetics offers a promising perspective that opens up opportunities for personal growth and development. However, it's essential to remember that we can't change everything at once, and it's important to focus on small, manageable changes. One practical tip for incorporating more polyphenols into your diet is to focus on colorful fruits and vegetables, as they are rich in these beneficial compounds. Additionally, herbs and spices, coffee, and tea are also excellent sources of polyphenols. On the other hand, it's essential to minimize the consumption of highly processed foods, which tend to have low polyphenol content and are generally not good for our health. Ultimately, the most valuable asset we have is our brain, and investing in its health every day is crucial. Simple actions like getting a good night's sleep, eating real food, and exercising our brains can make a significant difference. So, take small steps towards making positive changes, and remember that the power to shape your genetic expression lies within you.
