#5 - “Black Smosh” Almost Happened?! w/ MatPat

    enMarch 20, 2019

    Podcast Summary

    • A community of critical thinkersThe Game Theorists' success stems from their collective of analytical minds and their shared interests in media analysis

The Game Theorists, a YouTube channel known for its critical analysis of various media franchises, was built on the idea of showcasing multiple thinkers as a community. Ian Hecox and Matt Patrick, the channel's creators, initially started with just one show, Game Theory. However, when YouTube allowed custom URLs for channels, they expanded to include partner shows like GT Live and The Film Theorists. The name "The Game Theorists" reflects this collective of critical thinkers. During their conversation, they shared that they had previously worked for the same company but didn't realize it until later. Despite having different focuses within the same media realm, they found common ground in their analytical approach. A lighthearted moment arose when they mistakenly referred to different Pokemon characters, highlighting the ease with which their shared interests and humor could lead to misunderstandings. Overall, The Game Theorists' success comes from their commitment to fostering a community of critical thinkers and their ability to find common ground in their analysis of various media franchises.

    • Smosh rebrand could have been more successful with gradual integrationAuthentic relationships and organic transitions are key to successful cast additions, but rushed integrations can leave viewers disconnected.

The Smosh rebrand, which involved introducing new characters and personalities into the channel, could have been more successful if the transition had been handled more gradually and naturally. The cast and creators wanted to build genuine friendships and connections with the new additions before fully integrating them into the content. However, Defy Media, the company behind Smosh, pushed for an immediate integration, which may have left viewers feeling disconnected and unfamiliar with the new faces. This approach is not unique to Smosh, as many TV shows and YouTube channels have faced similar challenges when introducing new cast members. The success of such transitions often hinges on the authenticity and organic nature of the relationships formed between the existing and new cast members, as well as the audience's ability to connect with the new personalities.

    • Forcing diversity without understanding can lead to backlashAuthentic representation and understanding are crucial for successful diversification in content creation.

Attempts to forcefully diversify content for the sake of demographics without genuine understanding and representation can be met with resistance and backlash. During a conversation about the evolution of a content team, it was revealed that higher-ups had long-standing plans to create a "black Smosh" spin-off, treating it as a simple replacement of the existing team with new demographics. This approach was met with opposition from those who understood the nuances of digital content creation and the importance of authentic representation. The proposed idea, although not malicious in intent, lacked sensitivity and failed to consider the unique aspects of the digital platform. This incident highlights the importance of genuine understanding and representation in content creation, rather than simply relying on demographics as a means to expand audience reach.

    • Insensitive project ideas met with disbeliefDuring a discussion, some insensitive project ideas were proposed, but were met with disbelief and mockery by those involved. Creators should be mindful of the potential impact of their ideas on diverse audiences.

During a discussion, it was revealed that some ideas were proposed for a project with the intention of appealing to specific demographics, which were deemed insensitive and were met with disbelief and mockery by those involved. These ideas included targeting black audiences with a project featuring only two white male leads, and creating an LGBT version of a project with one of the creators already assumed to be gay. The discussion also touched upon fan fiction, which often featured themes of death and romance, and how the creators had jokingly incorporated these elements into their own lives and projects. Despite the lighthearted nature of some parts of the conversation, the insensitivity of the proposed ideas was a serious concern and was met with strong reactions.

    • Armpit hair length impacts deodorant effectivenessLong armpit hair blocks deodorant coverage, consider clippers for optimal length, personal preference matters, proper maintenance enhances hygiene

The length of armpit hair can impact the effectiveness of deodorant application. Long armpit hair can block the coverage of deodorant, acting as a shield that keeps it from reaching the skin. The speaker in the conversation had grown used to having long armpit hair but realized its drawbacks when they noticed how effectively their coworker's shorter armpit hair allowed for better deodorant coverage. The appropriate length of armpit hair for optimal deodorant application is a matter of personal preference and can depend on the direction of hair growth in different areas of the armpit. Clippers or electric trimmers are commonly used tools for achieving the desired length, but it's important to understand that clippers are essentially glorified razors and not shears or tree trimmers. The conversation also touched on the topic of body hair and the various ways it can grow and be managed as we age. Overall, the takeaway is that paying attention to the length and maintenance of armpit hair can lead to better hygiene and more effective use of deodorant.

    • A Father's Pride in His Intellectually Curious SonFather expresses pride in son's intellectual curiosity and love for learning, shares his own experiences growing up as a middle child, and emphasizes the positive impact of siblings on his upbringing.

The child in question, despite not showing a strong affinity for physical affection, demonstrates a strong intellectual curiosity and a love for learning. This is evident in his nightly routine of being read to before bed, as well as his eagerness to attend storytime sessions. The father, who has always wanted children, expresses pride in his son's developing intellect and playful teasingly refers to him as a "nerd." The father also shares his own experience growing up as a middle child in a large family, discussing the dynamics of being sandwiched between siblings and feeling the need to prove oneself. Despite the challenges of being in a large family, the father emphasizes the positive impact of his older siblings raising him and shaping him into the person he is today.

    • Growing up in a large family: unique experiences and dynamicsLearning to share resources and evolving relationships in a large family shape one's perspective and influence personal goals

Growing up in a large family with a significant age gap between siblings can lead to unique experiences and dynamics. The speaker describes the challenges of learning to share resources and the evolving relationships as siblings grow into adulthood. Despite the financial burden and the difficulty of imagining younger siblings as equals, the speaker expresses a desire to have children and pass on the lessons they've learned. The experience of growing up in a large family has shaped the speaker's perspective and influenced their passions and goals.

    • The Significant Responsibility of Raising a ChildRaising a child involves careful consideration, preparation, making decisions, experimenting with theories, and experiencing challenges, but the rewards are immeasurable with patience, dedication, and a sense of adventure.

Having a child is a significant responsibility that requires careful consideration and preparation. It's essential to ensure that the child has the best possible start in life. The process of raising a child involves making numerous decisions and experimenting with various theories on child development. Even the smallest actions, like showing a baby different patterns of dots, can reveal insights into their development. However, the journey of parenthood comes with its challenges, such as sleep deprivation and physical discomforts. Despite these hurdles, the rewards of watching a child grow and learn are immeasurable. Ultimately, parenthood is a unique and rewarding experience that requires patience, dedication, and a sense of adventure.

    • Every interaction has the potential to make a differenceKindness and support can positively impact someone's life, even the smallest actions can have a significant impact, and we all have the power to make a difference.

Every interaction, no matter how small, has the potential to positively impact someone's life. Whether it's saving someone from suicide or simply making their day better, kindness and support can ripple out and make the world a better place. The speaker's goal has always been to use their influence to make a difference, and now in their current role, they have the opportunity to do so on a massive scale. They strive to inspire and educate, providing opportunities and ideas that might not have been available otherwise. This principle has been a guiding force in their life, and they believe that even the smallest actions can have a significant impact. It's a reminder that we all have the power to make a difference, and it's important to use that power to help and support others.

    • Negative news gets more attention, leading to a cycle of more negative newsBe aware of negative news bias and make a conscious effort to seek out positive news and balanced perspectives

Negative news tends to get more attention and engagement than positive news due to the human tendency to be drawn to drama and conflict. This creates a cycle where news outlets and social media platforms prioritize negative stories to attract more viewers and clicks. This can lead to an overwhelming amount of negative news, which can negatively impact our mood and perception of the world. It's important to be aware of this bias and make a conscious effort to seek out positive news and balanced perspectives. Additionally, it's worth noting that the way news is framed and presented can vary greatly depending on the source and context, and it's essential to critically evaluate the information we consume.

    • The abundance of negative news can make the world seem worse than it isQuestion the sources and agendas behind negative news to separate fact from agenda, essential for critical thinking skills in today's world.

The abundance of information available to us through the Internet can make the world seem worse than it actually is. Before the Internet, fewer things were reported on, and people were less aware of the bad things happening around the world. However, the constant exposure to negative news can make it feel like the world is getting worse. It's essential to question the sources of the information we consume and consider the agendas behind the stories being told. An example given was the Japanese bomb balloon incident during World War II, where the government suppressed the news of the failed attack to prevent negative publicity. Critical thinking skills are crucial in today's world to separate fact from agenda. It's not enough to take information at face value; we must dig deeper to understand the context and motivations behind the stories we are told.

    • Media manipulation and misrepresentation at the gym and on social mediaBe aware of media manipulation and fact-check before sharing information to avoid spreading falsehoods.

The media we consume, whether it's TV at the gym or social media, can be manipulated and misrepresented, leading us to believe false information. At the gym, the speaker finds it infuriating that there are multiple TVs, each showing different channels, and she finds herself drawn to the Food Network while working out. She compares this to the way people consume information on social media, where they often believe and share false information without fact-checking. She gives the example of a viral video on Twitter about Trump's bald head, which was poorly done but still received millions of views and likes. The speaker also mentions the incident with the MAGA hat kids and Native Americans, which was initially reported incorrectly by Fox News. She emphasizes that the camera is a selective frame and what gets included or excluded can shape our perception of reality. Additionally, she warns about the use of CGI technology to replicate faces and create false information. The speaker urges us to be more critical of the media we consume and to fact-check before sharing information. She concludes by noting that in today's fast-paced digital culture, there's a lack of time for reflection and analysis, making it easier for false information to spread.

    • The Challenges of Social MediaSocial media can perpetuate problems through misinformation, misunderstandings, and oversimplification. It's crucial to approach it with critical thinking and fact-checking to promote accuracy and understanding.

The current state of social media can perpetuate problems without proper retrospective analysis, leading to misinformation and misunderstandings. The pressure to be the first to post can overshadow the importance of fact-checking and critical thinking. Negative information often spreads faster than positive, and once it's out there, it can be difficult to correct. The complexity and nuance of many issues don't fit into the quick, tweetable format, leading to oversimplification and misunderstanding. This can result in hurtful accusations and misconceptions, making it essential to approach social media with a critical and questioning mindset. The Internet is at a crucial point, and it's important to be aware of these challenges and strive for accuracy and understanding in our online interactions.

    • Navigating complex conversations about controversial topicsFocus on understanding the bigger picture in controversial conversations, prioritize child safety and awareness, and respect personal preferences in entertainment discussions.

Having meaningful conversations about complex and controversial topics, such as allegations against public figures like Michael Jackson, is important despite the challenges of navigating muddled facts and narratives. The conversation should focus on the bigger picture and prioritize understanding rather than being right or wrong. The real issue is recognizing the importance of the topic and what can be learned from it. In the case of Michael Jackson, the conversation should center around child safety and awareness of the signs of grooming and abuse, regardless of the specifics of the situation. Additionally, when it comes to entertainment, such as the upcoming Aladdin remake, personal preferences and expectations should be acknowledged and respected.

    • Genie's new approach in Aladdin remakeWill Smith's Genie acts as a mentor, diverging from the iconic blue design and potentially in response to audience feedback and release date strategy.

The Genie in the live-action Aladdin film, portrayed by Will Smith, is taking on a new and interesting approach. Instead of being blue and reminiscent of Robin Williams' iconic performance, the Genie will be more like Hitch, acting as a mentor to Aladdin in his quest to win the heart of Jasmine. This change may have been made in response to leaked information and audience reactions. The same phenomenon occurred with the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, where the design of the character was met with criticism, leading to changes before the official trailer release. The close release dates of The Lion King and Aladdin live-action remakes may also be a strategic move to capitalize on the success of the former.

    • Discovering new aspects of beloved stories through live-action remakesSome find joy in live-action remakes for the added detail, depth, and discovery of new aspects of their favorite stories

While some people may have reservations about live-action remakes of beloved animated movies, others are pleasantly surprised by the new interpretations and the use of talented actors to bring the characters to life. For instance, while some may have grown up with the original animated versions of "The Lion King" or "Aladdin," others appreciate the additional detail and depth that live-action brings. For example, the visuals in the live-action "Aladdin" trailer gave Ian from Smosh a sense of awe, as he discovered elements he hadn't imagined before. Additionally, some people, like the speaker in this conversation, were unaware that the original animated movies featured different singers for the child characters' voices. Overall, while some may be skeptical of remakes, others find joy in the new interpretations and the opportunity to discover new aspects of their favorite stories.

    • Casting based on talent, not fameIn an ideal world, casting decisions should prioritize talent over fame. Good stories sell themselves and audiences are drawn to emotional tales well-told, regardless of actors' fame. Animated movies offer the opportunity for original stories to thrive and save money by focusing on storytelling.

While star power can help sell movies, especially live-action remakes, it's not always necessary for a great performance or an engaging story. The speaker argues that in an ideal world, casting should be based on who can best fill the role, rather than relying on famous names. They believe that good stories sell themselves and that audiences are drawn to emotional tales well-told, regardless of the actors' fame. Animated movies are highlighted as a place where original stories can still thrive and attract audiences, and the speaker suggests that the industry could save money by focusing on storytelling rather than needless excess. Ultimately, the speaker values good stories above all else and believes that the best decisions are made when casting and creating movies with that priority in mind.

    • Anticipation for 'I Am' builds through word-of-mouth and positive buzzThe success of a horror movie like 'I Am' can be fueled by excitement and positive buzz, even if it starts off slowly. Enjoy the conversation and subscribe to the SmoshCast for new episodes every Friday.

Excitement for a horror movie, like "I Am," can build through word-of-mouth and positive buzz, even if it starts off slowly. The success of "Get Out" is an example of this phenomenon. Matt and Ian expressed their anticipation for the upcoming horror film and shared their plans to attend the opening night with their team. They also discussed the impact of humor in their discussions, as they joked around and bookended their conversation with laughter. Matt, being the first guest on the Smosh Cast, appreciated the opportunity to chat with his friends and have a good time. Despite not covering all the planned topics, they focused on enjoying the conversation. They encouraged listeners to subscribe to the podcast on various platforms and check out the SmoshCast YouTube channel for new episodes every Friday.

Life Kit presents: What's in a dad?
Code Switch host Gene Demby and comedian Hari Kondabolu are both new fathers, and they're both learning to raise kids who will have very different identities and upbringings than their own. It's left both of them reflecting on some big questions: How will they teach their children about race? What are the elements of their childhoods that they want to pass on? And what, exactly, is a father anyway?

    About the Podcast:

I am Shua and welcome to Light-Up-with-Shua.

This podcast is all about conscious living and conscious parenting.  Being a parent myself, I realized the extreme importance of the decision to become a parent as one of the most impactful for me and the world I live in.

Therefore, I decided to interview people from all walks of life with diverse multicultural backgrounds to share their insights on this and other topics.

Conscious living is an important skill that we all assume is an innate one but requires a lot of deliberate thought and action.

In addition to the interviews you will have in this show, on each alternate week, you will have an episode with me on various topics of faith, tradition, and health.

Through this podcast I hope to inculcate the significance of intercultural and interfaith relational skills as well.

Most importantly, with every episode I aim to give a message of hope, a thought to ponder, and allow ourselves an opportunity to grow and evolve!
